Books by Faf and those types of players are often the most interesting as they don't pull any punches.

Books from players like Gilly are so vanilla.

alot of the books written by Gilchrist , I felt like were just ways for him to make a bit of extra coin.

Warner, Starc, Lyon should be long gone, they were all awful in that home summer v India, and all should have been moved on then, if not earlier. But if Warner scores a flat-track bully ton against a club-level Windies attack to start the summer, that's his automatic pick status secured for another 3 years.

Hazlewood has only taken 3 test wickets since we lost to India. Since he was part of the attack that failed badly in both Sydney & Brisbane v India, his entire red-ball output, shield & test, is 5 games, 9 wickets, average of 40, strike rate of 94. If he's fit, he really should be playing the first half of the shield season and proving he's currently a better choice than the likes of Neser, Boland, etc. As he's not doing that, I'd rather pick the in-form guys over the one who has barely bowled a red ball in 18 months. don't think that counts as dropping him.

Cummins still belongs, even if he's never had to perform at state level. He's only played 14 first class games in his entire 11+ year career that weren't tests.

Smith still belongs too, even if he's no longer up to the same level as that 4 year, best in the world run that ended just before the sandpaper tour.

First step towards test irrelevance is dispensing with proven players on the basis of one series.

Moreso when that series was two summers ago.

In fairness, 99% of people in world cricket over the last decade could call Warner a w***er, and I'd agree with them.

Faf is in that 1% that has no right to be throwing stones.

Really looking forward to seeing this West Indies outfit, its a shame they we don't get the series as often and they don't get exposed to the big games as much as they should. They have a promising batting line up that is now more suited to test cricket. I still have major doubts they can score enough runs to win over here but they have a group of guys who seem committed to being good test players. Their bowling attack in the pace department is up there with some of the best IMO Joseph and Seales have loads of potential , Roach is consistent. Just lacking a spin bowler.

Still don't see them winning either test but they should be far more competitive than previous years.

They have bought into it. They aren’t exciting to watch: Mayers is aesthetically pleasing and I really hope the pitches seam a bit as his bowling has really developed. Chase I am hoping can rediscover some of his past form.

I alluded earlier in the thread to some positives from their domestic one day series: Nicholas Pooran smacked a century this morning. There is a pattern historically of their talented players failing when wearing national colours in white ball formats and abandoning their domestic scene aside from the CPL. It’s encouraging to see he and Shai Hope making runs in their 50 over comp.

The man has played 57 Tests - taken 215 wickets @25.5 and because he has barely played Test cricket for the past 18 months and has lost momentum,you want him dropped permanently. He remains our best specialist seamer.. specially on home decks. Starc has a worse career average than Hazlewood, always has. So if any one needs dropping from our attack it is 'the cricketer of the year' what a joke that is. As for Warner he should pull the plug after the home Tests as his away record in both the subcontinent and England is abysmal, but 'the slugger' wont because he has hinted that the Ashes will be his swan song. So lets hope he goes out with more than his @9.5 in 2019 which frankly is embarrassing for an Australian batsman. For the record his average in India is a mouth watering @25.

The actual comments being discussed are from an interview with the BBC where they asked about the stairwell incident. He simply said Warner had been giving it to them all game like a bully and he ‘has no time for bullies.’ He also addressed that he’s made mistakes and is no saint.

I have no idea what he does and doesn’t say about Warner in his book.

I think I may have bought about 3 of his autobiographies. I also went to one of his book launches (usually around the start of the cricket summer) at Dymocks.

Gilly was a great guy but its money wasted reading the stuff in there. Same too for Michael Clarkes book.

The cricket book industry is indicative of how the team has fallen in the public eye, a prosaic captain's tour diary and a couple paint by numbers autobiographies used to be guaranteed Christmas bestsellers which is no longer the case. The great Waugh/Ponting teams barely had a bloke in them that hadn't been the subject of some sort of biography or written their own.

The Waugh and Ponting tour diaries were the best, they weren't the most exciting blokes with the most exciting stories but they had the best detail.

They detailed everything in their diaries unlike the Merv Hughes diary with Ian Cover where Merv couldn't be stuffed and Coves did most of the work.

Some funny stuff though…put Street in the test side, despite the fact he can’t even currently get in his state side, pick Morris because he’s bowled well in a couple of Shield games, despite the fact Nesar has also, or Boland has performed in tests. Pick Sangha just too sound different.

Anyway. I’m looking forward to the series. I personally think the Windies will really struggle over here, but I’ll also be interested when I hear some of your intelligent cricket breakdowns throughout the series.

We will struggle I don’t doubt that. Even when we are playing our best cricket we tend to crumble against australia - I remember a test about 8 years ago maybe longer where devendra bishoo got us right on top - australia were 8-70 or something dire - and within a session we threw away that advantage and never got within a bulls roar again.

I was encouraged to see a stout batting performance in our tour game today. Brathwaite, Brooks and Holder all made runs. It goes without saying that Holder and to a lesser extent Roach and Brathwaite hold the key to us being competitive.

I’d love to see Da Silva play a big role too. He’s made of the right stuff and showed that against England
