The fixtures will have a large say on who finishes where.

18 teams all play each other once then will the WEAK teams ie Suns , GWS play the stronger sides twice or will they play weak sides.
The stronger sides , will they play weak sides twice or what ?

We have to hope the fixtures are balanced ( thats a joke ) .

When i see the fixtures then i will make a further comment

What do you all think re 2012 ?

I think it should be a matter of playing each team once and once only, we've seen first hand this season at how a season can drag on- especially with the extra two weeks due to the byes.

But it's not what I think- the game isn't about fairness anymore, it's whatever brings in revenue.

So you're all just going to have to continue to bitch about fixture equity until the corporate fat cats reduce the season to 17 rounds of playing each team once. It's the only way.

With more teams in the comp there are fewer "return" games.

In 2010 there were seven return games in a 22 game season
In 2011 their were six return games in a 22 game season
In 2012 there will be five return games in a 22 game season.

"Who you play twice" will have far less impact on your teams ladder position than it did two years ago.

The fixtures will have less impact on final ladder position than ever before .....in the AFL era anyway.

The best 8 teams of 2011 made the finals and there is very strong argument that they ranked in the correct order regardless of the fixture.

The fixture determines where teams will finish in 2012 unless it doesn't and it will only be known how it affect certain teams until two thirds of way through the season.

They talked about this on AFL 360, if all teams played each other only once, the ladder would be that same, except 12 and 13 would have swapped spots.

Rubbish, if anything the less 'return' games that are played the more important they are, from a Carlton perspective, of the 5 return games 3 will be against Collingwood Essendon and Richmond if a side was to draw a few of the bottom clubs twice its a massive advantage.

I think the AFL try to balance it so the bottom sides play each other multiple times more often than not, but there are always going to be surprises from one year to the next. Such as the Bulldogs and Eagles this year.

all the teams that only got the suns once this year should get the giants twice next year. seems only fair :)

Mathematically impossible.

Suns played 6 teams twice this year. Means 10 other teams only played them once.

Giants play 5 teams twice next year. So only half of the teams that played the Suns once this year can play the Giants twice next year. No doubt, Sydney will be playing the Giants twice, so only 4 other sides will get the double. And I'd heavily presume that the Suns will play GWS twice, which means only THREE sides out of the 15 remaining teams get GWS twice.

And odds would suggest probably Melbourne, Bulldogs and Adelaide are the frontrunners (given that the sides that got the Suns twice this year were mainly those who lost a key player to them).

At best, you'd think if you got 4 games in a combo against GWS, GCS and Port, you'd be happy for 2012. If you get 5, you've got a big leg up. If you get all 6... begeezus that's a free pass to the finals, surely?

Rubbish, if anything the less 'return' games that are played the more important they are,

They are still worth just 4 premiership points. The fewer return games, the less important they are. Unless one team lucks out and draws five really really pox teams in its return bouts next season, the draw is highly likely to be fairer than ever.

the fair way would be 5 bottom teams play GWS twice, 5 next up teams play GC twice, next 5 up play Port twice, etc

I only hope the people who do the fixtures are as clever as yourself.

But their past record inticates they are very happy to give brand new teams VERY tough fixtures.. given the list of teams GC played twice last year included Geelong, Hawthorn and the Bulldogs, all who played finals footy last year..

They try and fixture around which clashes will generate hype and interest..

Wit GC it was clash against Geelong, due to Ablett.
Obviously the Q clash against Brisbane.
Hawthorn and the Dogs lost players to GC also.

For GWS you would imagine they would play these teams twice

Sydney - obvious to start a east v west type rivalry, Sheedy will lap this up
GC - the other start up club, who has the best kids
Melb - Scully, but also getting a Melb v Syd type rivalry happening

That only leaves two other teams who will play GWS twice.....

Collingwood can almost bank on the fact it will be Carl, Ess, Geel and Haw that we will play twice.....yet people will still complain that the pies have a gifted fixture.

Are you saying playing Essendon twice a year isn't a gift??

Cocky Blues. What I can guarantee is that the boys will get up for both Carlton games, like they did against Geelong. Were embarrassed in the final and it must sting. They are also due for a win against Collingwood on ANZAC day.

We will get Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond, Hawthorn (or St Kilda/Bulldogs) and West Coast (or Sydney) twice. That has been a given in recent years. If we happen to play West Coast once, I am sure it is at PS. Freo PS. Adelaide Melb. Port AAMI. Brisbane - Melb. GWS - West sydney. GC - GC. Sydney - ANZ
Always travel to Perth twice. Have a feeling we will be travelling 6 times next season.
At the G (Home games) - Richmond, Hawks, Pies and Blues
