Is Gilmour the X factor in our midfield .Forget rucking, just as a midfielder .He,s tall, quick, long kick, strong, experienced ,proved he can manufacture clearances ala Judd with strength & acceleration out of centre & ball up congestion end of last season. Is he our midfield messiah, the answer to the question of midfield improvement.

I have said this before salim malik, we went into the draft looking for a midfielder you just pointed out.
We came out with great midfielders but not the tall type we where looking for maybe Harvey has seen this too and is now looking to build the midfield around Gilmore, I for 1 hope so. :thumbsu:

Gilmore surprised a lot of people in the 2nd half of last season. It's funny what some game time and confidence can do for you. Harvey seems a lot tougher on him at training and he's actually responding to this and taking it on. Under CC he was known for just doing his own thing and as such didn't get a lot of games.

Comparing him to Judd is just silly though. As for the strength part of it hopefully his brief role as ruckman taught him a thing or 2 about clearances at AFL level.

I couldn't agree more with this, the last 6-7 weeks from Happy really showed he has what it takes to perform in that role. I honestly believe in 2008 we will see Happy play predominately in the midfield and make the position his own. All he needs to do is back himself.

Out of interest Keyser, who do you think will win?

I can't recall of the top of my head the last time we won even a rising star nomination, but I think it's safe to say a quite a few season ago now. It would be nice for us to claim one or a few this season. Palmer & Hinkley are certainly eligable. Is the Brockinator, Foster or Ibbotson eligable??

Palmer, Hinkley, Brock, Ibbo, Drum, Mayne from the Senior List are all eligible. Warnock played 12 games in 2007, so he is ineligible by 2 games.

At this time of year, most teams think their team is going to improve more than all the rest, unfortunately level logical heads are required in assessing your team against the rest.

Gauci has done a good analysis but to me the main thing is to look at all the negatives for 2007 and reduce that number in 2008. In reality we will have players injured, suspended and out of form. We need to keep these negatives to a minimum and hope our positives are as big as possible.

The bottom line is we need to get our best players on the field each week, if we have close to our best 22 each week, we will be on course to a good season. To get the best 22 each week we need luck and good management ( injuries ), discipline ( suspensions on & off field ) and brain cassettes inserted on game day.

Reckon you'll cop the same treatment as I did for essentially saying the same thing?

Misleading to whom, this is the Fremantle board. If you want to discuss our shortcomings feel free to start a thread on the main board or the West Coast message board.

Everyone pinning their hopes on Gilmore stepping up as a centre square midfielder will be disappointed IMO. For that to happen he would already be a clearance machine for South's, but he isn't.

Gilmore looked good in the square last year because he was opposed to a 200cm ruckman, who is much less agile and who was focussed on winning the tap. Against someone his own size one on one he'll struggle.

You could be right Dom, but I'd still like to see the lad backed in for a few games in the pre-season at least and see how he goes.

Yeah I'd be happy with that. It's a shame we probably won't have an intraclub game, would have been good to see him opposed to Hase for a half then Josh in the second half to see how he fares against our established onballers.

The A team will only play 2 or 3 pre-season games so Happy should get his chance to shine. Just remember that Browne and Walker were outstanding last pre-season.

fat wombat , gilly & the 200cm ruckman weren,t the only two around the ball .what were the rest doing ,having a cup of tea & scone while they let him gather the pill.for some reason no matter what gilly does there,s always ****baggers who will knock him.what else does the guy have to do.I think harves can see what he has to offer & is going to back him in
More power to harves for seeing his potential.

my first post how exciting!

i tend to agree with dominiguez, although he was more of an impact player in the middle and not your usual in and under or running midfielder. if he gets his mojo going though would be hard to man up on... but IMO not the answer to our prayers in this dept. better off blooding the kids and hoping 1/2/3 step up soon..
