You aren't contracting for their current form, you are contracting their future form.

Past performance predicts future output.

It's now 18 months of serious ????.

Crazy talk on here regarding Fyfe. He's our first brownlow medalist. He's a bonafide superstar. He just needs a rest after coming back from a very, very serious injury. I was at the game yesterday and his in close stoppage work was immense. You can't expect someone to jump straight back into brownlow form after such a long break and bone injury. Give him time, he'll win another one, bookmark it.

Reportedly asking for 1.5 to consider a move east.
If true, there is 0% chance of him leaving on exposed form.

But that's fine for us. He isn't asking Freo for that money.
It's about more than just money, he would be leaving family and the club that has drafted him, brought him through to this point.
You can see the effect of the club on players like Pav and Neale from SA, Mundy etc from Vic.

18 months of what? He had a broken leg.
He is now consistently leading the midfield in contested footy.
He is now leading the club to a great and unexpected 6-5 start to the season, in particular with a young side missing Pav, McPharlin, Ballantyne and with other key injuries (S Hill, Bennell etc).

What do people want from him?
Dangerfield, Sloane, etc look great but look at who is around them, look at who is up forward for them.

Dangerfield, Kelly and Martin are all playing with 100% confidence in their bodies with little or no major injuries in their whole careers, they also have none of the pressure of being a first year captain, or captain at all. On top of that Fyfe's leading a team that shouldn't really be contending for finals yet, with a huge chunk of inexperienced, inconsistent youth around him that he can't rely upon like those other player can.

Assuming it's not a terminal decline in form due to serious injuries, this is the ideal time for a form drop anyway. It means we could potentially pay him less with reduced interest from elsewhere, its the first year / 18 months of a rebuild so it's not like we need to win anyway, and guys like Blakely get to learn more and pick up some of the slack. It could also mean he's potentially motivated to "bounce back" when we really need him playing well in a few years time.

Two fist round pick I challenge you to post it on main board now .love to see some st kilda BF having a laugh at you.

trading only happens if Fremantle matches a rival bid.
If they don't he goes for nothing and Fremantle will get a compensation pick off the AFL.
Usually the next pick after your 1st.

So if some fool team offers Fyfe 1.2 million over X years, if you don't match, he goes to that club and you get compo pick.
Match the bid, and a trade has to take place.

IMO Fyfe is being let down by Mundy and Neale, Blakely is helping but the others are not at a great level either. Stephen Hill's injury is really hurting, prior to that he was playing inside a lot more.

I am confident he will be staying at freo, his body need to refresh .

Sure about that, I'd say MJ is right up there along with Weller and Blakely

Deadset positive.
He would be well clear.

Weller as good as he has been wouldn't be top 5.

Top 5 right now would be in no order - Fyfe, Blakley, Johnson, Hamling and Walters/Neale because of the last 6 weeks.

Fyfe, Sandi, Neale, Walters & Connor.

FFS He's not at his best but those describing him as some sort of spud are being very disingenuous. He tops our score involvements almost every week (he did again yesterday), he's always close to the top on pressure acts, he's normally first for contested possessions and he's normally our best midfielder for intercepts. All that and he's clearly not even close to what we know he is capable of.

As a hypothetical if we were to get say 2 first rounders for him, what is the probability that either would ever come even close to Fyfe's best? Adding in the impact of the cultural damage of losing the captain and the impact on the team's competitiveness (or lack of) without him for the coming years whilst those first rounders are developing?

I'm sorry but I'd still much rather bet on the chance he will improve further back to his best over a gamble on two draftees and some extra TPP room. I don't think we will need to break the bank to keep him (ie nothing like 1.5m per season) but keeping him seems the overwhelmingly sensible move for all involved here imo. Still expecting negotiations to go into full swing during bye week.

Agreed.
Fyfe was pick 20 people!

Guess who was before him in the draft:

Good players: Scully (Priority), Dusty (3), Talia (13), Pittard (16)

Ok players: Cunnington (5), Jetta (14), Menzel (17).

Meh/Crap players: Trengove (pick 2, playing VFL), Sheppard (7), Melksham (10), Griffiths (19)

Who? Butcher (8), Moore (9), Gysberts (11), Lucas (12), Howard (15), Tapscott (18)

Never/Not yet reached potential: Morabito (4), Rohan (6).

So a <20% hit rate in terms of really good players (as judged by me - feel free to disagree), and with a >50% hit rate in terms of meh/crap/delisted players 7 years on, why would we consider a first-round pick to be adequate compensation? Even with two picks, I still think that would be a terrible idea.

Surely no-one is suggesting you actively trade him out the debate is what $ amount you match?

If any other team has offered 1 mil and above, and that's the bargaining chip his agent brings to the table during the bye week, does Freo agree to match it?

He would know what he could get from other teams by now, Freo are in an awkward position of signing him now and risk paying overs.

I guess he gets his price and you guys run the risk of overpaying him, even an under performing fyfe is still good and your list should be in the spot that if you over pay him for 3-5 years you could still make other contracts work. The concern would be some stupid offer of 5 + years then you need to really think about it
