Long and Direct i reckon, if we dont take a mark down forward, then have small forwards at the feet of our big men to swoop.

If the Eagles flood, then we need to get our players in the Eagles forward line as well and keep the ball in there.

We need to be accoutnable in midfield, D Johnson on Judd, Ling on Kerr.

We need to shut down Wirrpunda as well and the run he gives them out of half back. Maybe play a Varcoe or Rooke on him if Rooke is back

Probably will have to give Rooke another week in the two's. Looked ok in the second qtr, but would still miss a lot of match fitness. Like King, don't want to bring him back again until he is ready and fit for it.

The Ling vs Judd thing may be the option, Johnson on Kerr a maybe. However they have to be accountable also, and with Bartel firing it may be difficult for them to match up.

Long and direct is ok, but we just killed them early last time and the year before by being just direct. Our passing from namely Gary Jnr was awesome to watch, especially when linked to his brother.

I'd say that is going to be the difference.

About 2 weeks ago I stated we must have either Gary or Chappy in the middle, as we need the pace and hardness for the ball which we just don't have with the current midfield.

I guess we will see if that works against a quality team, instead of the insipid crap we had from yesterday.

lol, if we have ling on judd and dj on kerr then that leaves bartel to get the ball himself in the centre. need to focus on winning the hardball ourselves and not just caring about our opponents.

forget judd, kerr is the worry.

To beat the Eagles we need constant pressure on the ball carrier, as their uncontested running game will kill us. Though their contested game will probably kill ours aswell.

Watch out for Wirra, he had a pretty rubbish game this week, and he doesn't usually do that two weeks in a row. Keeping an open forward line against us is always a good plan as the Doggies did on Saturday, when it gets congested we are very good at clearing the ball with Glass, Wirra and BJones down there.

Long and direct is always a good option, muck around with it too much and the pressure usually causes a turnover, our players are always willing to chase and put pressure on the player running.

I think maybe Judd is too slippery for Ling, shame Rooke is so underdone.
Perhaps pull a rabbit out of the hat and get say a Tenace to shutdown Judd, Tenace is about hte quickest guy in our team.

Agree that Kerr needs to be stopped. I think DJ is perfect for Kerr. Kerr has excellent defensive skills as well so our ball carriers in the centre need to be aware of it.

U know i reckon Ling is better suited playing off Half forward UNLESS he has a specific tagging job. He is too slow to be an electrifying midfielder for us so he needs to be up forward where he can hurt the opposition on the scoreboard.

I think Kerr is the most in-form mid at the moment. Judd, while still being damn good, is not as impacting as Kerr is atm. Therefore, we need to shut him down, then make sure we have our own ball winners in there.
So, Ling on Kerr to start, then if not working, move Ling to HFF and DJ onto Kerr.
Start Gaz Jr, Corey and Bartel rotating through the middle to win some clearances (if we get beaten in the clearances against WCE, we get beaten on the scoreboard, simple as that).

Long and Direct isnt as simple when you hve the opposition flooding. so we need to find a different method.

Maybe just chip it around amongst oursleves and be patient. I dont mean chipping around like we already do, i mean chipping around waiting for an opportunity, there is a difference.

Will the eagles look to square up on Jimmy Bartel or will they man up on him !? If it's wet come sunday Jimmy will have a feild day even if it is against the eags.....I remember a game a couple of years ago down at the cattery against the power and bartel had an absolute feild day in the wet against ports much vaunted midfeild, lets hope he can repeat it.

While Bartel may have a field day in the wet, the rest of our team (particularly the forward line) are showing that they can only play in dry, flat conditions.
I'd be nervous about this game if it's windy or wet. it used to be our strength, but not anymore.:thumbsd:

Valid point....especially if our skill level under pressure is'nt on song, notable villans in Mackie, Corey, Enright & Tenace will really need to be hitting the targets this round or else west coasts 'gut running' on the turnovers will kill us wet or dry !!

Ling will get stiched up if he plays on either Kerr or Judd. Horses for courses. Maybe Ling could tag Priddis and play forward more than usual.

I would bring Rooke back in for a pure shutdown role of Judd. He has done it in the past and if he is fit enough then he is the best matchup. Tenace is too loose for this role. Otherwise perhaps G.Ablett or Chappy (again if fit) could be used.

I would perhaps challenge Kelly to close down Kerr.

Egan on Hansen. Scarlett on Lynch.

ling on kerr or judd...and catempire to give ling 5 votes for his work.

Ling to towell up Kerr or Judd and darren forssman to post that Ling should be dropped because he "has no awareness" or "cost us a goal".

Just a bit from left field.
Selwood on Judd or Kerr.
He played a bit as a defender in junior footy and has pretty good defensive skills. Wouldn't have the engine to run with either of them for a full game but Ling could relieve he. It would be a very good learning experience.
Varcoe could even have a run on them for a bit just to get a bit of accountabilty into his game. I've enjoyed seeing him put some defensive pressure on while playing up forward.

I hope Glass plays on Hawkins just to see how he goes on a high quality full back.

you must have missed when he could have run for the ball, but ran away from the ball in pursuit of deleido.

and im not sure i can be quoted as saying the following, "has no awareness" or "cost us a goal".

and if Ling "towell's" either Judd or Kerr i will give him 5 votes. good luck to him but if thompson persists with either of those matchups then we wont win.

Yeah, must have missed that amongst Ling keeping the opposition's most dangerous player out of the game. Again.

Good. I look forward to it.

forget judd, kerr is the worry.

Judd racked up 34 possessions in a BOG performance against the hard running Dogs on Saturday - he reportedly had the flu as well.

Kerr had an off day - shocking first half, won't happen again.

Interesting that one of your posters is already talking about tagging Priddis - think he's only played about 11 games so far.

Yeah, must have missed that amongst Ling keeping the opposition's most dangerous player out of the game. Again.

with the liberatore tactics that ling employs im not surprised deleido struggled to get to the contests, he had to drag another 90kgs with him.

as long as your happy with players running away from the ball then thats all that matters really.

I don't care if he is sitting in the grandstand next to his nanna. If he keeps his opponent quiet and contributes 20 possessions and 3 goals, I'll be very contented. It means he has done his job.

Long and Direct i reckon, if we dont take a mark down forward, then have small forwards at the feet of our big men to swoop.
That may work against a kindergarten team, but not against a team on top of the ladder, with the best defence. Pin point passes from defence and hit a leading target inside 50. WC are great at getting men up when the ball comes in long.

If the Eagles flood, then we need to get our players in the Eagles forward line as well and keep the ball in there.
BAHAHa west coast flooding? I reckon we have more chance of Charlie Gardiner winning a brownlow then that. And then we are meant to keep the ball in THEIR forward line, with the skills we have? haha we will get flogged. Run the ball and break the wall, simple rhyme and it works ;-)

We need to be accoutnable in midfield, D Johnson on Judd, Ling on Kerr.
ACCOUNTABLE, not defensive. Ling can run with Kerr, but get the others to play their own game, but keep it accountable.

We need to shut down Wirrpunda as well and the run he gives them out of half back. Maybe play a Varcoe or Rooke on him if Rooke is back
Have you watched WC this year? Wirra has played up forward. And if he played up back geelong have gone with dash to be the accountable forward.

My Match ups
Ling - Kerr
Scarlett - Big Q
Egan/Harley - Hansen
Corey - Judd

Who cares about the other ones. Lets just play our own game.

I don't agree there, Ling would be great if he is just a tagger and pick up disposals every now and again. Unfortunately due to really poor form (i.e. Kelly), injuries (i.e. Jnr last year), and no one else seemingly not having the engine big enough to run around the middle, Ling had to try to win the ball.

This isn't one of his strong suits, but I can tell you, being a tagger is. He should have been beaten for pace against Deledio, but wasn't. So I think he has been told to get back to what he does best.

I'm sure if he took on Judd or Kerr (favour Kerr over Judd), then we will do ok.

DF have some positive reflections about your team, give it a go. You may amaze yourself.
