If GC had matched the bid, Richmond would have had to trade for him wouldn’t they? If that’s correct (I’m not 100% on these things) is it Richmond’s fault that GC chose not to match?

There is plenty of AFL standard talent out there. Playing in state leagues, even high end local leagues, other sports. Teams just have to think out of the square a bit more rather then worrying if they were picked up in the top 30 at the draft.

This Bowes and Pick 7 trade was just blatant AFL corruption. Nothing else.
First the AFL change the rules to allow salary dumping.
Then they tick of a trade which sees Pick 7 and a top ten pick player go for a third rounder.. not even ballpark equal in value. Not even the same sport type equal value.
Next they let Geelong smooth the 2 year Bowes contract over 4 years, completely defeating the purpose of it being a salary dump trade, and for anything from GC needing to be added to the trade.
And finally, to top it all off, the AFL say they're going to review the rule change they made and outlaw it, meaning the Cats get to benefit from their corruption and no one else can.
