News Damien Hardwick agrees to become the coach of The Gold Coast Suns

I'm not sure he's the magic pill Gold Coast and the AFL hope he will be, but will be an interesting watch.

Always love him for what he gave the Tiger fans.

It wasn't just him that built the Tigers though, so can he do it with a different team is the big question.

Gale, Peggy, Balme, Livingston, Cotchin, Riewoldt, Dusty, the coaching assistants, amongst others were all critical to the Richmond success. Needs to find the equivalents or it'll just be another coach with talented list.

Lol actually he will play at marvel more often. GCS will get like 1 MCG game a year. Every other melbourne game will be at Marvel. You hate to see it.
Will continue to despise Marvel as Gold Coast people don't go there. Then again, Gold Coast people don't go anywhere.

Highest paid coach in the business.

Low pressure environment.

Minimal media coverage.

All the other perks of coaching in a non-football state.

Modest on-field expecations.

Loaded with academy talent for years to come.

Avoids the teardown rebuild at Richmond.

Laughing all the way to the bank.
Always warm in winter

Destination club

Can't find fault with all those positives, Hardwick on a BIG winner here.

BS pressure is always there in AFL, Dew had it & let's say Hardwick misses the finals 3 years in a row at the Suns you think the pressure won't be there?

Good Luck To DH, he's timed his run very well. This should be called the padding the DH retirement fund. This should make him the most remunerated coach in AFL/VFL history by the end of his tenure.

if he delivers the premiership he's set for the next 15 years

You have to be daft to not understand what he meant when he said he was burnt out. He was burnt out after 14 years at the same club, the same employer. Couldn't do any more there.
He always said he would coach again next year. He's now had 3 months off to take a break, and lands a new gig with an appealing list. No issues.
I like the appointment, I hope GC has some success, no better bloke for the job.
Not really, 'burnt out' generally means cooked.

Should have said he needed a change of scenery plus and extended break away from the game to recharge. Would be fair enough, as you say, after 14 years in the one joint.

He said he was burnt out from coaching Richmond for 14 years. Needed a break from coaching, but that he would be back coaching somewhere next year.
That's how it's played out, so I don't have an issue with it.

6 years for someone only 3 months ago gave up on AFL is a massive contract who's to say he won't walk away again when the Suns struggle as a member of the Suns I feel we've got this wrong

With the money he will get from Gold Coast, it will set up his retirement and help fund his children's education to whatever University they want to go too, no way is Dimma walking away from that (and good luck to him too, only a fool or a liar would turn down that amount of coin he will get from Gold Coast)

Ok. Was unaware the bolded bit was fact. Fair play Hardwick then. He knows how to win finals. Suns have a list with promise. He could be a good fit. Not getting the Clarko to North vibe about this. Imo Clarko 'is' cooked.

You do realize he was already a multi millionaire even before Richmond began winning premierships?
I'm pretty confident in saying his retirement fund was well setup a very long time ago.

To give you an example, my fathers best mate lives a few doors down from Pendlebury. A house in which he bought for 7-8 million. I sometimes wonder if the general public have any clue as to how well off majority of people involved within the AFL truly are. The AFL fraternity live in a bubble. Assistant coaches earn similar wages to specialist doctors.

He just has to perform modestly well to get through that contract, if he makes a few finals and a few top 4 finishes that would be good enough not to get sacked with the 6 month payout these days

and divorces are expensive too so this contract should allow him to build himself up again

I have to quit mid-sesason, I'm burnt out ......... nek minnit.

Very smelly .....
Funny hey... prob had clause in his contract about a 6 month wait till he's able to coach another club... like to know when his official start date is with GCS. Guess the new Mrs Hardwick wanted a GC lifestyle and this was all orchestrated months and months ago.... too perfect for my liking how everything fell into place.

He never said that, that was the common thought after he left but he never said he’d be coaching somewhere else.
