Only thing I can think of is how we've gone about our list build compared to North possibly?

edit: Looks as if that was the reason

Going to be fascinating to see how the two new clubs fare given their very different approaches to building a list for the AFLW.

The Kangaroos have absolutely raided the comp, evoking memories of their aggressive recruiting in the mid-70's.
They've snared the reigning AFLW MVP in Emma Kearney and a ton of very solid players like Kearney's teammate Jenna Bruton, Brisbane's Kaitlyn Ashmore and Collingwood's Emma King.

We'll be taking a very different approach with 5 of the first 15 selections at the draft.
It's worth remembering that a few of the top draft picks from 2017 had a very big impact for their new clubs; the Bulldogs Monique Conti and Freo's Stephanie Cain were excellent and #1 pick Huntington was looking like being one of the best forwards in the comp before doing her ACL.

From a North perspective most of their recruiting is only fair... the Melbourne Uni girls they'd invested heavily in were foundational to the comp, yet latecomers like Carlton and Collingwood were given preferential treatment re: licenses

Falcons girls just won the tac? Perhaps we go local and go young? The comp retention of players /player movement seems very fluid. Matty Boyd is on to her 3rd club.. but some of that is because the comp is in start up. With more clubs to come in..as well as supporting local girls ..maybe we feel we will have a stronger retention having a lot more locals as the core of the list.

On the AFLW board supporters of the original teams aren't happy that they got raided yet only receive one compensation pick from the 2nd round onwards, whereas North fans aren't happy we get the first two picks yet their first pick is at number 12.

So now that we've had confirmation of the first 2 picks in this years draft, does anyone have some insight into potential draftees?

Guess we'll find out after the U18 championships which start this weekend until June 16, with a 2nd round played from 9-13 July.

Interestingly, the Vic Country vs Vic Metro game is scheduled as a curtain raiser to the Geelong-Darebin game at GMHBA Stadium on the 16th of June.

Important dates & other trade/draft information

The AFLW sign and trade period runs from May 23 to June 4, with the eight foundation clubs able to re-sign up to 23 of their 2018-listed players.
Expansion clubs Geelong and North Melbourne are not able to sign 2018 AFLW players but can add open-aged players (over 18 and didn't play AFLW this year) at any time.
There is a free agency period for delisted players from June 4 to June 7, with preliminary lists to be lodged on June 8.
The draft is touted to be held in October, as has been the case the last two years.

It will be interesting to see if we look to sign any more open-aged players, especially ones any of our VFLW players before the preliminary list lodgement date

If we do I hope we pick up Mia-Rae Clifford, Maddison Janssen, Lara Williams, Elise Coventry and Hayley Trevean.

Domsy has had his say as to who the first pick should be

Well none of the player moves.. well most of them for us ..may not have happened if we had been allowed to be in from day 1.

Without knowing who are the star player in the coming draft ..I hope use our picks on local girls in the Falcons TAC team. Nina Morrison would fit the bill I guess..

I guess its a god chance to come from the below list

Here's a run down of some of the players in the recent girls Grand Final preview linked above.
(mods: Apologies if I haven't referenced the link correctly).

...

Players to watch
Geelong Falcons:

#18 Nina Morrison

Times in Best: 6

Morrison is one of the most hard-working midfielders in the competition. She has electric speed and is a brilliant ball-user. She often gets the ball on the outside and clears it into space, but can also find the ball in the heart of the contest.

#42 Sachi DeGiacomi

Times in Best: 5

DeGiacomi has been pivotal for the Falcons at centre half-forward. She has kicked 13 goals from nine games and if stats were taken for TAC Cup Girls, they would say that she has also had plenty of assists. She is an unselfish player that knows how to find the goals when needed, and she also has a fantastic set of hands.

#23 Lucy McEvoy

Times in Best: 5

The Geelong captain has been remarkable this season. McEvoy does her best work in defence, but can also play a role as a tall midfielder when required. She is a versatile player that has a booming kick, and always goes in hard at the contest.

#7 Olivia Purcell

Times in Best: 4

Olivia Purcell is one of the toughest inside midfielders in the competition. She is an aggressive tackler and a good clearance player, thanks to her innate ability to find space. Her acceleration is a huge asset for the Falcons and will serve her in good stead on Saturday.

Northern Knights:

#21 Ellie McKenzie

Times in Best: 6

Ellie McKenzie is the most exciting 15 year-old in the competition. She has been amongst Northern’s best players in every game she has played, and has kicked 10 goals to go along with it. McKenzie is a vital forward for the Knights and can work some magic with the ball in hand.

#23 Gabrielle Newton

Times in Best: 5

Newton has been a star in the ruck, up forward, in defence, or basically wherever she is needed. She plays any role that she is asked to play and does it with class. Newton is a wonderful ball-user and knows how to find the right option.

#5 Madeline Brancatisano

Times in Best: 4

The Knights captain has been outstanding in the midfield this season. What stands out about Brancatisano is her defensive efforts, as she lays some strong tackles and can also play a shutdown role on the opposition when needed. She has displayed quick hands throughout the season and is an unselfish player.

#18 Sarah Sansonetti

Times in Best: 4

Sarah Sansonetti has been a key player in defence for Northern this season. She often finds the ball at the heart of the contest and can clear the ball out of defensive 50 with ease. Sansonetti is an agile player who can move off her opponent well to create a contest.

Also, AFL Draft Central has published their TAC Cup Girls team of the year (https://www.afldraftcentral.com.au/tag/nina-morrison/?PageSpeed=noscript)

Coventry definitely, surely.

I also like #24, Madelaine McMahon, smart and can take a grab.

I've only watched some highlights and the odd full game, but the VFLW squad has talent and depth.

Geelong's development of the VFLW team's talent over the past couple of years shouldn't be underestimated imo; they've built what will probably form the core of their debut AFLW season, hopefully with the addition of a few talented rookies via the the draft.

Lager listed the TAC Cup Girls team of the year, Purcell of the Geelong Falcons was apparently selected on a wing - I have seen Olivia Purcell in action with our VFLW team and actually thought she was a more mature player; very poised and assured with the ball. I'm not sure whether we are able to pre-list her or what; if not she would surely be in the mix for a draft selection.

Another player named in that TAC Cup Girls team of the year, Captain and ruck-rover Madison Prepaskis, has been tipped to go at #1 on the AFLW board by a couple of posters, fwiw ..

I reckon we'll be competitive, and may prove to have as much or more attacking system than other teams - going the exceptionally early crow in this matter and hoping that no one will remember if we end up struggling. Still; I have confidence that we should be able to put together a good group. Cranston, for one, will thrive with the added responsibility in the midfield I reckon.

I've changed my tune. I think I might take an interest in this. It might also get my girls interested in footy.

I still agree that it would be good to be able to filter the home page to suit preferences. But that would require a level of web design clearly beyond the club (ie. basic onwards).

My mates daughter was in the Geelong Falcons squad and she admitted herself that she's too lazy to make it despite having the talent. She'd rather socialise, etc than take it seriously enough to give it a crack. Let's hope she changes her mind down the track.

Often just a maturity thing. We’ve seen the likes of Tim Kelly and Tom Stewart excel with some maturity after admitting to not being ready for a professional environment as 18 year olds. Fingers crossed for her.

My girls can’t wait. It’s going to be huge for women participation and interest in the game which is great.
