WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

I’m becoming more and more disillusioned by the AFL. Every year sees less loyalty from both clubs and players. I find it hard to identify with the Cats now.

As a kid you loved that the bulk of the players came from the local area. Sprinkled with a few recruits from either interstate or country Victoria. Then when the draft was introduced we used to watch them draft young kids, patiently wait for them to develop and be satisfied with the journey (hate that word) to get to a premiership team.

Now, when a kid gets drafted, I wonder what the % likelihood is now that he will stay at your club for more than 3-4 years? Let’s face it, players are just commodities now. Keep them whilst they might show potential or be useful but if either the club or player become impatient, they are out the door. There is no patience.

After Kelly left and we were left with a swathe of picks I thought that it would be a great opportunity to bring in a group, as we did in ‘99 and ‘01 to mature together. Revitalise an otherwise ageing list. But it seems it’s ALL about the now. The future can wait. I’ll of course be rapt if we win the flag next year but will it feel as special as ‘07 or ‘09 or ‘11? No way.
Its very hard to enjoy what happening atm for mine..maybe some do. I do think once its post draft we will look at who we have and who we have lost etc ..it will settle... but it is disheartening .. the likely hood of getting any top level kid in the draft this year is probably low.

David King the flog claiming we've had it good & underpaid for players we've brought in previously ,Danger,Henderson & Tuohy etc..

I think he's unhappy becuase Mr Big at target clothes no longer fit him.. :moustache: .

Most footy fans are obsessed by guys who get big stats and ignore the fact that playing midfield is the only way you can get big stats. No other player recently has played their early games as a full time mid (apart from the mature aged kelly) so some posters around here jumped to the conclusion that he was a gun and our best draftee in recent times. In reality he wasn't winning clearances, was being killed on the spread and his disposals weren't that damaging. Not saying he can't become a good player but posters around here got way, way ahead of themselves purely because he was given opportunities other debutants weren't.

Guilty. I said openly and in broad daylight that I'd like to see him get more opportunities. And that 9 games wasn't the biggest sample size of all time.

Point me to the struggle session. Actually good luck trying.

Higgins & Smith gotta prove themselves again. Can't be a Jack Steven 4 b & f's and we are better for it scenario. Smith doesn't get the wide expanses of the G and Higgins is not the star man anymore. Got to fit those guys into our system and learn how to play our system and with our players. Top ups are never so easy...

I look forward to seeing it. I still think we like the most likely to leak from CB, we have a very ify ruck situation ... and our KPB will we also need changes from this year.

IMO we get from CB as good as we concede, these days good Stanley shows up a lot more then bad Stanley. Henderson and Blicavs are both excellent defending KPD, with Henderson being a good user of the ball for his type, I have zero worries on them.

I see our weaknesses as
1) Inflexibility on counter attacks against peer opposition
2) Poor output by our small forwards and HFFs, who lack athleticism, marking power and aren't a goal threat.
3) Weak to fast counter attack off half back
4) Ground ball gets by of non-midfielders - which was only an issue against Richmond

Cameron, Smith, Higgins, moving Rohan into Dahlhaus old role and Sav into the 2nd ruck role goes a long way into helping fix 1 and 2. Everyone is weak to 3, if the opposition is willing to risk it. I expect we'll do some extra drilling about 4 over the pre-season, but given how tall we'll be its always going to be a weakness.

Its basically 40s pick next year for hickey and 58..its overpay but not as bad as it looks. Gives them enough bid points for this year.
Do you think the recently retired player we were after that was mentioned on here the last couple of weeks could have been Frawley ? Would make sense as Harry has retired and Wellsy did say today he would like another tall back.

Yeah I’m dirty we lost Fogarty coz I really rate him, but I’m not silly, next when we’re winning games it will be in the rear view mirror. Can’t wait.
With out been a smart arse... the only game I'd be happy winning with results is a Grand Final.... im going to be pissed we do win a Grand Final with what we're doing. If we make a preliminary and lose and a failure for what we are doing in bringing in Smith and Higgins, instead of backing our youth and picking kids in the draft...

What delusions?

We were 32 minutes away from knocking off the team that has won 3 flags in 4 seasons. Do you think Cameron, Higgins and Smith aren't improving our side?

It seems there is some delusion here, but if might be from you.
Teams always look good on paper.... But unfortunately the game isn't won on paper... its won on a footy field... just because we might look to have a good team.. they have to play well as a team...

Scott & Paddy have 2 years to finally get "their" cup. Obviously can't develop young talent. 2 years and we are the crows and kangaroos.

Think the club has some confidence in a number of year 1 and 2 players but unless they ‘smash through’ into the first 22, they are happy to let them have a year or two extra to develop. They might be ‘banking’ on them to be ready by 2023 to replace Higgins, Smith and Selwood or be reasonable trade value.
I can understand the ‘do it whilst we have Danger (and Sel and Hawk)’ strategy but think it’s vital that we use picks to get at least two quality youngsters.

Yes apart from banking heavily on a few very experienced imports they are in a roundabout way putting a lot of faith in (mainly) Dekoning and Stephens as well.

Don’t worry I’m sure everyone else can find reasons to why we are successful should we not win a flag in the next few years at the expense of drafting more kids, I’m sure it’ll help when we go over the cliff.

feels like the 90’s all over again

Last time i checked neither of them took time off footy, put on 10kgs or were stabbed by their mrs.

It makes you wonder if the Geelong FC has a new mindset on the different options of recruiting with one being enticing a small group of targeted 'top quality' (not injury prone) 28 to 32 yo's to club on a on-going regular basis to keep the club more competitive, while at same time also bringing younger players into club, as there will always be 'top-class older players' available throughout the competition wanting a move at the latter stages of their career, especially if that chosen club of destination is deemed to be successful, as no matter what age, class players are hard to come by. Having said that, if this was to be a strategy then it also has it's glaring pitfalls.

most strategies have pitfalls

most strategies have pitfalls

David with there now being 18 clubs in competition, it's a fine line to get a edge, no matter which way you go and even then you need hell alot of luck, the break even number of one flag every 18 years is a sure tell that strategies or short cuts are on a razors edge.
