WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

Yep drafting Stephens and SDK in the first round last year was all about the now
Theres multiple examples though,

Righto, thanks for your input. 2 kids last year from 8 years of a similar approach.
Wasn't a criticism, just a comment, there is definitely a trend for taking more immediate action over projecting for the future. Again not criticizing, but I would say our approach is different to that of late 90s early noughties which was definitely a longer term strategy.

I wonder if we honestly thought someone else was going to take this kid before our next pick. I'm not one to get upset about selecting x or y player because the truth is the draft is a lottery but trading up to get a player we didn't need to trade up for is always frustrating.

He was linked to melb at 21 though.

The guy we picked doesn't scream instant gratification to me. Seems like an attempt to pick the future athlete, just hope he can kick a football.
Not saying the kid is instant gratification just the strategy. We traded out of the first rd this year for an immediate outcome. It seemed we would need to wait until next year for any further action, but bang, made a move to get some action again now.

Not critiquing the strategy or plan just that it reminds me of the need to do something now and get a response.

Question is though are any late 1st rounders guaranteed to be a success, i would have to say absolutely not, so Wells took a shot at something that has just as much chance of failing as any other pick.

I'm just really sour I think, that we didn't get Henry when he was so damn close. Looks like we'll get Bruhn in two years though, given his reaction/GWS' massive player retention issues...so swings and roundabouts I guess.

Wouldn't mind just playing a straight bat on the next one and taking Ford, or even Max Heath as a really solid ruck moving forward

How do we even know if holmes was our target with this pick? Maybe it was someone else that we just missed.

When you trade just before that pick you are trading to get a specific player so he was clearly the target..no one was taken between when we traded the pick and us taking him.

yes it coukd be. but thats the extreme best case. you dont base trade based off the extreme best case. You base it off the expected case.

Clearly we either rate holmes as a lot higher than 20 or we definitely think our future 1st will be near 20 or both.
