Love the irony,2019 If Geelong don't show compassion & allow Tim Kelly to go home for family reasons I hope he shafts them & enters the draft & they get nothing

2020, GWS should match the offer because Geelong won't do a suitable trade, Then do a deal with Collingwood.

Hey Morons, Jeremy Cameron's contract is going to expire at the end of this month, You can't trade a player of his calibre to a club he doesn't want to play for.

Not at all. I'd personally force every club to trade for any player that comes to them under FA. No compo, no matching. If a player who qualifies for FA wants to come to your club you have to work out a suitable deal dependent on the wage they're coming for. In the case of Cameron - two first round picks.

It stops clubs from getting big names every year and it also stops them from picking up young talent via the draft. Eventually the comp will even itself out.

I remember hating that Carlton picked up in a short space Kernahan, Bradley, Naley, Motley etc.. We don't want to see a return to those days.

Got to say, that although it's great for Geelong that we've landed Cameron, I don't reckon it's great for the competition. For Richmond and Geelong to land two of the best key forwards whilst they are premiership players isn't great. I'm sure if I was a North or Demons fan I'd be that little bit more disillusioned with the game.
Totally agree. I remember expressing my concern that introducing FA would result in haves and have nots. It has played out precisely that way. I think we’ve got to look at ways to open things up for the have-nots, eg. Additional salary cap.

That's another vagary of the system. GC don't match purely because their ladder position that year allowed them to get a high pick. We aren't quite as lucky (or seem not to be if the reports of GWS matching are true). The whole system needs a review and shake up. You either have FA or you don't. And if you do then should compensation be given? Should the top 4 clubs in a given year be entitled to raid the lower clubs wares?
My view: FA should be FA, no restrictions. It’s ridiculous that a 28 year old can still be held back. Compensation is an important equalisation mechanism but it’s not enough. Would like to see the losing club get additional cap relief.

It could quite easily be Geelong in a position not attracting FA's. Wasn't that long ago we were nearing bankrupcy and hardly a sexy proposition for a gun player. My concern is for these kids growing up barracking for Melbourne (though they will enjoy Falls Creek I suppose), or North or even Essendon now. Where's the hope for them?

Which netted us Cam Mooney and Enright (plus two fails, Spriggs and Bray).

Also, Cameron just had a poor year. There’s no guarantee he’ll get his form back.

I remember Demons supporters whingeing about us picking up Mitch Clark.

fun fact, Bray did year 12 with me...
Absolute Freak schoolboy footballer

Meh, it can turn around quick enough. Brisbane were on their knees a few years ago and are now a destination club.

As I said..I think we could work out a way to do it... but id rather persist with young mids..hopefully robust mids
Id rather keep Constable and talk to him in staying then getting Crouch. I still think Constable could be a future player for us if he decides to stay

So I've decided I'll stay off the main/oppo club boards and just stay in this little safe-haven until my brain repairs itself, haha :tonguewink:

Anyway, had this thought before, and it brought me a sense of immense calm. Whatever happens during this trade period, if you look at this holistically over a period of 3 years, we turned Pick 24 into Jeremy Cameron for at least 5 years.

Draft: Pick 24 - Tim Kelly (ready made mid who had immediate impact - was always going home from the word go)
Overall Trade Received: GC 11 - originally WC 24 (2020), 13 (2020), 14, 37
Likely Scenario in trade for Cameron: Pick 11, Pick 13 or Future 1st (will be pretty much the same)
Receive: Jeremy Cameron

Kelly 27 next year, Cameron 28 - negligible difference. Kelly leaving, allowing Guthrie, Duncan and Menegola to flourish (Kelly AA last year, Guth AA this year - no net loss). Cameron filling a key positional need, that we've wanted for years.

We only should have got 14 and a Future 1st for Kelly, if we're being honest. I never expected 24 and 37 on top. We then took 24 (ended up 27) and turned it into Pick 11. So not only did we end up with Cooper Stephens last year, we get Jeremy Cameron too...all from one pick in the 20's. 37 ended up becoming Jenkins and Taheny, but was offset by what we gave pack to Adelaide and Essendon respectively - hence not including it.

We also don't have to worry about dealing with Adelaide and all their Crouch nonsense, as I firmly believe that was our backup plan in the event we didn't get Cameron - Danger playing perma forward rather than rotating, as our second target, and Crouch playing perma midfield. This is a blessing in disguise, as we'd probably be throwing picks down the toilet if we got Crouch and he just got injured again - also means we probably hold on to Narks or Constable

On top of that, we have our Future 1st as collateral too if need be, giving us essentially 4 first rounders to play with. Could possibly even give them 11 and a Future 1st, give Carlton 13 and 17/18 for Pick 7 and grab Bruhn. Trade 33 for Higgins.

We end up with over a 4 year period:

OUT: 17/18 - (2020), 16 (2021 - let's just say that we finish Top 2 again), Pick 24 (2017), Pick 33 - which will end up around 40 in this draft (2020)
IN: Jeremy Cameron, Shaun Higgins, Cooper Stephens, Tanner Bruhn

Boom.

P.S. this is a worst case hypothetical scenario. Best case we end up not having to trade anything, and we draft O. Henry and Perkins too.

End up with: Cameron, Higgins, Stephens, Bruhn, Perkins, O. Henry

:)

For us to win..someone else has to lose. If otehr supporters are unhappy ..its good sign...they feel threatened

One of the better suggestions on the draft board is to do away with clubs right to match FA...have an independent afl panel rank each player in terms of pick value..for example if cameron is P2..points to that value are deducted from geelongs draft total but gws cant match and cant keep him. Gives the players the movement they want but with some equalisation measure and removes all this brinkmanship crap.

Do not trade our future1st imo but agree with the rest. Well said.

Do GWS “get” the points from Geelong? Otherwise how is it equalising for the losers?

Yes they do..sorry forgot to mention that. Goes direct to them stops compo picks messing with the draft order.

Channel 7 Tom Brown just said on the news Geelong is still well and truly in the hunt for Crouch still...
So who do you want to believe than:shrug:
Did he get that info from Lynch?

That’s really neat. I like it.

Probably needs an additional mechanism to allow teams to make use of the points. Eg. You can trade points for picks with a willing counter party.
