And the big difference between the two groups above is that the elite rucks were all drafted and developed by their club.

Finding someone significantly better than Stanley via trade is just not possible.

I guess thats in the eye of the beholder. I get the feeling CS wants guys that can bang in . Add to that Stanley at his age , it's probably tome to add a younger player no matter what.

Sure there are lots of failures but if you want someone significantly better than Stanley level then you have to pay the piper. We could have given 2 ruckman a solid run on the list when were wasting a spot on Cowan etc.
I think it’s an open question whether you must aspire to have someone better than Stanley and my recollection is the hit rate in the draft doesn’t justify putting more eggs in that basket.

We did but they all got injured or were not good enough. Vardy, Macintosh, Simpson, Stephenson, West, Lucey etc were all on the list when Cowan was.

I still shake my head that we haven't given Fort a fair chance to show what his got, people will say his not as athletic as Sav. But the games iv seen he roves the ball well this year at VFL level
But then people will say that's VFL level, and I'll say he can only show what his got at the opportunity his in

Spot on. There is less than a handful of rucks who generally play well week in, week out - Gawn, Naitanui, Grundy - and even then they are not unbeatable. Stanley has played well against all three and has been influential in wins v Melbourne, WCE and Collingwood in recent years.

The majority of other rucks including those at other 8 teams (English, McInerney, Lycett, Hickey etc) are objectively no better or worse than Stanley. All can play well on their day but not necessarily consistently. Nobody is talking down the Bulldogs or Lions' premiership chances because of their relative weaknesses in the ruck. Stanley is clearly the best ruck we have and we need to persist with him, beginning on Friday night.

I agree with that but given Stanley will be 31 this year and isnt exactly durable it doesnt change the fact that we need to trade in a younger quality ruck for next year.

There wasa couple of games he dominated... that he was not selected probably shows where they have him placed.

He is contracted until the end of 2022 so still got a year and a half

Pretty much... although I think you can have stars in every or almost position... you just cant trade them in or pay them all top dollar. (The 07-11 group for example).
A team developed from drafting is usually less on the Salacp..as player who change clubs tend to get paid more. Hoe much would Stewart cost a team to try and tempt for eg. To bring in Darcy or Merrit or whoever would cost big dollars... and perhaps big trade.

The most likely situation is everyone wants to play in the best side...but everyone sees them self as part of the best 22. And everyone want as much as they can get without being called out for hogging the cap. I doubt Ben King liked being called out on TV the other night for example.

I basically agree with you. Its why philosophically I do not like to spend big to bring in backmen. Have alook at the picks used for the players we have in our backline for example. Ruck is one area I do think you do not want to be too cheap. Be interesting to see what we do from here.

If Meeks , the same age as Darcy feels he is ready , and sees Darcy as being there for three years..maybe he is an easy player to move.
We did exactly that with Ottens, though. The rest of the team, yes, it was pretty much through astute drafting and development.

I would hazard a guess that we'd be outright premiership favourites if we had Darcy in our side with his current form.

Without Ottens? We may not have won one, perhaps even two, of the three flags. We'd almost certainly have won in 2013 if Ottens was still around.

I see Darcy as potentially being an Ottens. The only problem is, he has to want to come to us and we'd have to be prepared to pay very handsomely.

The point of the comment was one cant have top players in every position. Yes you can bring some players , just not your full side.

Not sure about the idea that you can’t trade for good ruckmen. I mean generally good players at any position don’t move but just off the top of my head McEvoy, S.Jacobs, Ottens, S.Martin, Nankervis, and Mumford come to mind and I’m sure there’s plenty more. Between McEvoy, Ottens, Nank, and Mummy that’s probably majority of the premierships the latest 15 years.

Ie your made up opinion. There has been zero inclination this is going to happen. Just because you think it will happen, doesn’t mean it will.

He’s only just turned 30. I highly doubt he is going to retire.
I won’t speak for him but the intel I have is this will be his last year. You can take or leave the info; it’s no skin off my nose.

One thing I'm noticing on Stanley's social media is an increase in posts in regards to family and life outside of football

I know that's not necessarily uncommon, but it feels that if you were to look at the content he's posting and if you didn't already knows he's a footballer, his social media account wouldn't give the idea of him being one
