They weren't all plodders. Mumford was given a godfather offer from Sydney for e.g. Anyway, I guess we're just in disagreement on this one. The fact that to me seems much more obvious than any rift with a coach is the fact that he hasn't cut the grade at either AFL or vfl level this season.
He was good at VFL level when given the chance - not many of them, given injuries and season shutdown.

AFL level he wasn't good, but honestly being played at half-back might have actually helped.

Mumford's problem is that, at the time, Ottens was still there for another 3 to 4 years (we thought) and Blake was entrenched as ruckman number two.

Clarkie has a confidence issue at the moment, he started his career too well, to be not up to afl standard.

Freo wouldn't offer 4 year deal if so, he has not officially nominated which says he has some feeling for club that drafted him.

Zuthrie played half a season straight out of rookie draft and hit a wall after he was thrown on j roughy in a game, he was playing quite well may i add, and was looking like it was worth a shot, but the class of roughy showed and zuth has taken a bit to get over that.

Clarkie is a must keep if we are fair dinkum being so young, his confidence will come back in time, but chris, wellsy, everyone was happy when we drafted him, played really good football when he had sort of go for it, now being accountable is a new challenge he has struggled a bit with, injuries have played a massive part.

Im backing him in to be the running half back he was drafted to be, and i hope we can hang on to him and see if he can be that, he is only 20, surely he has to
be given that opportunity.

I do love his pace, nearly wojo.

wouldn't mind a nibble at Jay Lockhart from melb who has been delisted ask him to come down to the VFL for a year.

Would make more sense if Scarlett was staying.
You would think with him gone Clarke would stay unless he's pissed off with the club in general or just wants to head home.

Perhaps. You’d think if the rumours are true then he would certainly consider staying now.

But the other factor is a 4 year deal. If it were only two, maybe three, then I think he’d be more likely to stay. But that’s a big enticement for a kid who hasn’t entrenched himself in the best 22 yet.

Rookie pick.
Under 30 games in 5 seasons on the list. Absolutely no better than Ratugolea.

Hard Pass.
I think Flynn would be the best option. Also young, stood up to the rigours, has a big body, is competitive, good tap outs, quite good disposal rates.
But Ladhams is currently better than Esava

He's too young for Geelong!

Seriously, I was surprised to see he is only 23
Not opposed to us looking into Ladhams but I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s capable of being a #1 ruck. He seems the ideal second ruck / KPF to me.
Ladhams looks decent, but I think he would be a similar output to say Stanley. Ladhams seems to be one of those athletic types, a bit like Stanley, probably not as fast, but similar. Probably Neale will be a better type longer term, but I think Neale might have better forward craft, and Ladhams could be marginally better in the ruck.
If Clark goes, which sounds more likely than not, best case scenario would be Clark & 34 for 25 (via Carlton for Cerra) & 27. Values Clark around end of first round, which is what Geelong have apparently requested, and Freo don’t have to use or split a first rounder. Look at then trading 30 & 32 for Bulldogs 17. Gets us into the first round and gives the dogs points. Hit the draft with 17, 25 & 27
That is a good draft hand, I like that. If Kreuger goes to, then maybe pick up Brander with whatever we receive. I think Brander will go for scrap value, Kreuger might net a little bit more tbh.

17, 25 and 27 could very well net you Knevitt, Zac Taylor and Connor MacDonald. Would be a nice injection of midfield youth which we sorely need.

Sorry but im not buying the Clarke Scarlett rift being the reason he wants to leave, if that was the issue then Scott could have stepped in and made the decision to play him, the fact that it didnt happen says to me that he wasnt in any plans anyway, Scarlett leaving wont change a thing because the top dog has burnt him too.

Bit of work but you could do a median versus finishing position variance which would factor out your clubs success and leave you with your traded to position.

By year with rank the median selection that you would have in the natural draft order for the number of picks you take versus the actual median. So the outcome was that in any given year you might have pushed yourself back half a dozen selections with a trade in or pulled in if you lost players.

Might have to account for selections being pushed out for priority picks, FS, academy etc too. A lot of work.
This is a bit different to your approach and isn’t 100% accurate for a few reasons (bidding etc.) but it will be pretty close. It shows the difference between what clubs were “entitled” to based on ladder position and what they “spent”. A club with a positive value has generally acquired and used more picks (eg. By trading out players) while a club with a negative value has generally traded in players for picks.

If Kreuger wants out no worries, he is only for himself, maybe thats how you have to be, but injured a bit, others in front of him, wants to play forward,
really, will play forward when tom retires if good enough ,club been ok to him i think, going to have some pressure on playing forward for a big club like collingwood.
wouldn't want to put in too many bad ones, supporters will let you know. kruges pies star forward or back to sanfl.

Can you add columns for DVI used and DVI still on list
Turns out that’s hard because draftguru doesn’t record “still on list” in a format easy to scrape.

I can manually work out that Geelong has 74.6% of its DVI still on list from 2017-2020 drafts (after Jarvis and Taheny gone) but I have nothing to benchmark that against without manually doing each team.

footywire is good for finding players who are still on the list from a draft

Really like this. Can see the hole Hawthorn dug themselves into and to a lesser extent St Kilda with their Voss styled recruitment. A lot spent for little reward.

Really interesting reading, on a couple of fronts.

1. Nobody has had less entitled draft value than us over the period in question. Which does rather underline the paucity of the argument that the Cats have frittered away massive draft resources ('sold the farm', anyone?) in striving to remain competitive.

2. We're not even in the bottom 10 for draft value 'surrendered' in the pursuit of success. Again, a reminder that (for all our failings) we are not half as gloriously inept in this area as some would like to suggest.

Conspiracy theory number 4111 do we hire ex legend players as a way of their earlier salary sacrifice whilst playing. other words did we get around the salary cap by them taking under while playing and we then hire them as assistants on fair wedge. next Harry Taylor will be an assistant soon
The bloke is quite smart. He would make an excellent defensive coach to begin with, he even was a pretty good forward. I would have him in a heartbeat back at the club.
is it just me or does that thought of bringing in players like Brander and Ladhams just not excite you? I mean these guys are young compared to our list but also nothing special at their current teams, there is no real reason to believe they'll be special at Geelong. For the first time in years I'd rather take a punt on the draft with a crop of 18 year olds who could be anything.
I think Brander has better upside, and would be an okay replacement for Kreuger if he goes.

I personally have Clark valued around pick 18-25 range, I have Ladhams valued around pick 35-45 range. I don't think Ladhams will be elite, and I think although we paid a lot for Rhys Stanley @ pick 21 when we drafted him, he had more upside/hype than Ladhams. Though, I reckon Ladhams will have similar performance as Stanley in terms of a career. There is/was more hype on a Clark and Stanley, whereas Ladhams is a more a known quantity. I could be totally wrong, but I don't have Ladhams anywhere near the Clark value. Clark is contracted. Ladhams is uncontracted I believe?! I would definitely separate the trades, I reckon Ladhams could go for quite a cheap trade, just like Brander.

Do people think Gillett will be picked up in the draft? early pick? or rookie? Surely with that GFL record he would be right up there...
