Agree..clark might not end up being the best player from this draft but hes the safest pick in the top 15 besides ashcroft imo-ie the least risk of being a bust..and that has its appeal.
Safe doesn’t win u flags PO.
Stengle safe? Nope
Cameron 3 draft picks plus 5 million bucks safe? Risky AF.
Max Holmes safe? Who?
Dare a little Risk a little Be bold
GiddyUp Boys let’s take some risks lol 😂

Hypothetical situation: we’re up.. it’s our pick 8 (assuming Ashcroft already bid on of course) and both Clark and Phillipou are both on the board. We get a call from the Crows “Your pick 8 for our future 1st next year?” Would you do it? I would in a heartbeat
Serious
I just can’t see us having a specific person in mind and if they aren’t available then trading down
There’s going to be more than 1 very handy footballer left between Clark, Humphrey, Ginbey, Phillippou and Busslinger at our pick
I do think you will find it’s going to be 100% one of those players who becomes a GFC player.
we have been waiting for a top draft pick for 15 year and we finally get one we are going to trade down. Turn it up, silly talk…

As someone who has followed him very closely, and he's one of my favourite players outside the GFC...can say that him not playing last year is being exaggerated a fair bit as him not being good enough to make it into GC's team.

Played 83 games in his first 6 years and played 19 the year prior...and was always a 1st choice player. Only reason he played VFL as much as he did, was he was coming back from injury. It's a misnomer to say that he's being overhyped...when the guy was touted as one of their future captain options not two seasons ago.

Can play every position on the field that's not key position, and is an elite kick. I've said it before, he's basically a younger Duncan but better overhead and at defending one on one. Duncan has him covered in some other areas, but it's remarkable how alike they are as players.

I do honestly feel like a lot haven't actually followed him, and are basing their rating of him purely off last year - when he was injured for four months and missed an entire pre-season...so had an off year where he couldn't make his way back in. Prior to that, he was always first choice and played 78 games in his first 5 years - playing all games in the 2020 Covid year and 19 out of 23 in 2021.

The only reason we're ending up with such a highly talented player, is because it was a salary dump and nothing more. There's a reason two of our greatest players in Danger and Ablett both rate him so highly and recommended us to him/him to us. On top of all that, he's an amazing person and will be such a great fit for the club. Oozes leadership and I suspect will be in the leadership group once the current group moves on.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter what I say as people will just have to wait and watch him play next year - and then make their judgements from there. Doesn't really matter anyway, as we don't even need him to be an excellent player as we got Pick 7 out of it too. Thing is though, I think he could be better than all of them - Bruhn, Henry and Jhye Clark if we land him.
Gold Coast made an early decision that they needed to dump salary and dump Bowes. No point in selecting him in the firsts when he was not going to be part of their future. If they had selected him, it would have been harder to explain dumping him to their fans

This doesn’t make much sense. If he was good enough to make their 22, he would have. Instead he played VFL all year and lost all trade value. If instead he had played a good standard of AFL the Suns probably would’ve been able to offload him and keep pick 7.

I’m also not buying the “he was recovering from an injury” line. He played VFL from round 6 onwards. That’s more than enough time to regain fitness.

I understand Cats supporters want to justify the trade, but maybe the answer is he’s just not that good? He’s had one half decent season in a six-year career and it was playing a cushy, floating half back role.

Expecting Bowes to break into a premiership 22 straight away is a stretch. Projecting him to break into our leadership group or become a future captain is complete lunacy based on what he’s shown thus far.

“Top draft pick” is a bit irrelevant if you don’t account for the strength of the draft. This year’s pick 7 is 2018’s pick 30.

I don't think I'd go that far. I think there's probably a consensus amongst the Top 14 or so, and then it completely drops off after that.

Jhye Clark was a Top 5 talent at the start of last year, and is considered a Top 6-8 talent right now based on most phantoms. Ginbey has been one of the bolters and Keeler and Lemmey have dropped off a cliff.

For mine, there's 5 tiers in this draft (far more than other drafts and far, far more speculative after that top end drops away):

Tier 1 - Platinum tier who everyone wants yet no-one else can have, as they've all been earmarked for their respective clubs. Rated as the cream of this draft and have consensus opinion about their rating among most in the footy world (Picks 1-4):

Ashcroft, Cadman, Sheezel, Wardlaw

Tier 2: - Gold Tier who are all highly rated by most in the footy world...and all projected to go around this mark in around this order or similar. The players that more than one or two clubs are after, and the ones most likely to make it after the 'Fab 4.' Most except Allan and Ginbey all rated here since early this year. (Picks 5-14)

Tsatas, Humphrey, J. Clark, Mackenzie, Phillipou, Busslinger, O. Hollands, Ginbey, E. Allan, Jefferson

Tier 3: - Silver tier and some very talented players who were rated at Top 10 at different points of last year and this year, but still pretty speculative (Picks 15-34ish)

B. George, Keeler, E. Hewett, Hotton, Konstanty, J. Fletcher, Davey Jnr., L. Hayes, D. Jones, Michallaney, Hustwaite, Weddle, Barnett, E. Phillips, L. Cowan, Gruzewski, Szybowski, Burgiel, C. Clarke etc.

Tier 4: - Bronze tier and a mixed bag with some who could make it but most who probably won't (Picks 35-60+)

Too many to name, but guys like Mankura, J. Ryan, Lemmey, Gilbey, J. Hagan, Van Es, H. Gallagher, Gilbee, A'laoia, K. Smith, J. Richards etc. all come to mind.

Tier 5 - Project players: (Rookie draft)

Again too many to name, but guys like J. Davey, Riccardi, Clohesy, Northam, and anyone who slides through from the main draft who a club rates, comes to mind.

******************

Think most of these guys in the Top 14 or so would probably be at least Top 20 in another draft, and Jhye would definitely still be Top 10, IMO.

We'll see what happens from here, but for mine, there's a reason why all and sundry are trying to get into that next tier...and will likely fail...because everyone from 15 onwards has question marks and no-one is quite sure or agrees on where they'll fall. Will definitely be interesting to look back in five years and see how many of them are still on a list, but for now, who knows.

You need to stop this 'if you don't agree with my opinion it's lunacy' train of thought...it's been stated after all the recent shit fights, that there'll be no tolerance for it. You're a good poster and I respect your opinion, but IMO, you're way off on this one and shouldn't be calling people crazy for thinking otherwise. It's not productive.

For posterity, there's an old article floating around about how Dew wanted Bowes to build up fitness and didn't want him in the seniors until he got up to scratch...which he never really did as he kept having interruptions and it just wasn't his year. This happens to players all the time with interrupted pre-seasons...and the kid is literally only 24 and has had one write-off season. To suggest he's no good off that alone, without having followed him closely or knowing what he's capable of/done previously - is really a bit much.

I think you need to evaluate why it is the GFC, and Ablett and Danger all personally pushed so hard for us to get him/got in his ear - way before Pick 7 was even on the table. I'd say that alone highlights just how much the club sees in him. Not to mention them saying he would play midfield in our AFL side next year after just winning a flag. It's all pretty overwhelming evidence just how highly rated he seems to be internally. Your prerogative to see it as otherwise, but on this one we definitely disagree.

id say it match payment related... like wright was

Just rewatched the Vic Country V Metro game.

My opinion on Clark is that he is a solid player... a real goer who cracks in and tackles hard... but yeah honestly I much prefer a more dynamic bigger mid with a high ceiling like Humprey and then it's a piff at the stumps between Ed Allan, Ginbey & Phillipou (really warming to Allan).

I want to love Clark because I actually think he is a high chance to land at us... But the excitement factor, flexibility, size, speed & power just isn't there for me and with Bruhn/Willis/Parfitt & Atkins being similar to Clark in terms of size and positions they play I gotta say that I just don't want Clark over the guys mentioned above.

I could be proven completely wrong in time and all that matters is whoever we get ends up a very decent player (no matter who they are).

I'd almost bet my house on Oliver Hollands being a very solid outside AFL player (Duncan style) but top 10 is a stretch for him.

The talls look average & Ashcroft isn't even an option for anyone but the Lions.

It's definitely not a strong draft... that doesn't mean some teams won't do very well out of it and let's hope we are on the positive side of it.

I'd actually select the 17-year-old Harley Reid as the first live pick after Ashcroft if he was eligible this year.

I can understand Tsatas sliding (if he does)... hurt factor/efficiency could be low with him, although he obviously has no issue getting his hands on the pill.

Bring on the draft already.
Hey sorry to bother you, where did you manage to find the replay of the country vs metro game? I’ve been meaning to rewatch the game back.

You're also the same guy who said suggesting even 30 goals from Stengle is complete lunacy during last year's pre-season.

There's nothing wrong with that, it happens to the best of us...we all get 'em wrong sometimes

....but as Shadow's mentioned this style of 'because you don't agree with me then you're a moron' has to go. It's not helping anyone.

I think it’s Clark or Humphrey unless they are both gone by pick 8 and then we’re in a pickle. Get the sense Wellsy is thinking exactly how he was at the end of 2006 when he knew he was getting either Selwood or Boak. (Let’s hope they turn out even half as good!)

For our late pick - I am also on the James Van Es bandwagon - big defender who can intercept at CHB or lock down a marking target - might be a complementary pairing with SDK long term.

And then for one of our rookie picks where it is most fun to speculate - Shaun Bennier - third tall defender from North Adelaide at 193cm / 90kg who is both physical in the contest and reasonably quick off the mark - with a long left foot kick. Can also slip forward to take a mark or two. I like the ‘physical’ part most, and it sounds like he does too - adding a bit of mongrel into a well-drilled defensive unit would be the cherry on top.

Jack bowes was in many rolling AA teams in 2021 until he got injured in round 9. Was an absolute weapon of half back. He has already shown a 2 month stretch of A-grade football in his career and if there is any club to get him back to that or better it is us. Also Gc have a track record with having no clue reading talent. You only need to look at Brodie last year and Jarrod Lyons a few years earlier.

What can we trade from next year to get up the board enough to get him?

I suppose not much, a F3 won't cut it. Or do we still have that pick.

We have nothing. Traded our F2, F3 and F4.

I didn’t call anyone a moron, I just gave my opinion.

To be fair you called it complete lunacy. While you technically didnt call someone a moron i can see why some would interpret it that way.

I said the concept is lunacy, that doesn’t equate to calling someone a moron. It clearly wasn’t a personal attack.
Correct.
Saying that "Projecting him to break into our leadership group or become a future captain is complete lunacy based on what he’s shown thus far" is a perfectly legitimate, non-abusive statement of a perfectly legitimate point of view.

If Mullin comes I think it could make us reconsider our pick 7.
Perhaps a key position player?

I increasingly want us to trade pick 7 down the order or, even better, into next year. I don't think the top 10 is overly strong and there's a few in the 10-30 range this year that are worth a punt - Hewett, Busslinger, George, Hotton, etc. I'd rather have two of them than one inside 10.
