You are real giving type hoping to hand over a first rounder for a guy playing VFL for the GC.

Happy it worked out the way it did. Easily the greatest trade discrepancy ever.

As someone who has followed him very closely, and he's one of my favourite players outside the GFC...can say that him not playing last year is being exaggerated a fair bit as him not being good enough to make it into GC's team.

Played 83 games in his first 6 years and played 19 the year prior...and was always a 1st choice player. Only reason he played VFL as much as he did, was he was coming back from injury. It's a misnomer to say that he's being overhyped...when the guy was touted as one of their future captain options not two seasons ago.

Can play every position on the field that's not key position, and is an elite kick. I've said it before, he's basically a younger Duncan but better overhead and at defending one on one. Duncan has him covered in some other areas, but it's remarkable how alike they are as players.

I do honestly feel like a lot haven't actually followed him, and are basing their rating of him purely off last year - when he was injured for four months and missed an entire pre-season...so had an off year where he couldn't make his way back in. Prior to that, he was always first choice and played 78 games in his first 5 years - playing all games in the 2020 Covid year and 19 out of 23 in 2021.

The only reason we're ending up with such a highly talented player, is because it was a salary dump and nothing more. There's a reason two of our greatest players in Danger and Ablett both rate him so highly and recommended us to him/him to us. On top of all that, he's an amazing person and will be such a great fit for the club. Oozes leadership and I suspect will be in the leadership group once the current group moves on.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter what I say as people will just have to wait and watch him play next year - and then make their judgements from there. Doesn't really matter anyway, as we don't even need him to be an excellent player as we got Pick 7 out of it too. Thing is though, I think he could be better than all of them - Bruhn, Henry and Jhye Clark if we land him.

I think he will go very good, and will improve in a better system.
He played for Essendon don't no if it was just VFL he started the year at Essendon

Was he culled from the squad early in the year or something?

Don’t agree on the young blokes. If I was Whyte, Kroger and Willis Id be very nervous. If you are looking at what went wrong this year that was a complete wipeout. The latter two have been more than a one year wipeout. I’m not writing them off at all but it’s a an enormous year for them. We have shown more recently we are prepared to cut and run.

If Sav, Menegola and Sammy don’t play more than 8-10 games they are more likely than not gone.

ISmith, Ceglar, Tuohey would be greater than 50% chance of retiring. That’s with a few other being one injury away - Hawkins, Stanley and Duncan.
Smith only wanted a 1 year deal.

Well this is annoying...was hoping it was only rumour, but looks like it's happening:

Interesting how all these other clubs are raiding our key pillars to fix their own messes...just goes to show how well respected these guys are/how lucky we have been to have them.

Best of luck Lloydy, you will be missed!

That one is a pretty big loss.

I back the club in finding a replacement.

Not the ideal time of the year, someone will get an internal promotion

Not the worst option I have seen. Any idea on testing numbers?

None at all. But he looks like he’s a reasonable chance to be available at our 50’s pick. Have only watched his highlights so have little to go on, but he’s capable of taking a good intercept mark or choosing to punch. Kicking is tidy without being penetrating. Not sure what his knocks are but if he’s only been looked at as a late pick there must be some negatives.

HeraldSun appraises top 50 candidates.

I'm looming at our pick in the 50s and us looking for a Key Defender, many know about this guy?

Your top 50:1

James Van Es

GWV Rebels/Vic Country - Key defender, 197cm, 99kg

CC: 44, DB: 47, JP: 50+
October top 40 ranking: Unranked

Van Es excelled at the draft combine, recording the fourth-best time in the 20m sprint test (2.91 seconds) along with finishing first in the running vertical jump (98cm) and equal first in the vertical jump (75cm). The key defender uses these athletic traits to great effect with his terrific closing speed, spring and reading of the play, and he led the NAB League for intercept possessions with 7.8 per game.

He’s the one I’m hoping will be there for us but think it’s probably unlikely.

McAsey on leave...looks like that is flushed early R1. If anything it shows that picking someone like Clark has its upside.

Agree..clark might not end up being the best player from this draft but hes the safest pick in the top 15 besides ashcroft imo-ie the least risk of being a bust..and that has its appeal.

I would like him although i reckon he goes in the 30s/40s but if he gets to 58 i think he would be a good pick

I suspect we may have 3 or 4 retirements next year and the young blokes on the list will get an extra year to show there worth. Doubt we will make 8-10 changes with no picks.

We wont make 10 senior list changes no but 6-8 (like this year) is likely. I reckon we elevate someone like dempsey, and bring in some free agents to fill some slots.

Absolute favourite along with Mitch Szybkowski of that 30 plus group.
