I increasingly want us to trade pick 7 down the order or, even better, into next year. I don't think the top 10 is overly strong and there's a few in the 10-30 range this year that are worth a punt - Hewett, Busslinger, George, Hotton, etc. I'd rather have two of them than one inside 10.

Aside from Clark, I totally agree

Jack Bowes will be 25 before he even pulls the hoops on and is currently not in our best 22. For whatever excuse you have he wasn’t in a poor Gold Coast team this year. His issue wasn’t talent which is pretty much all you need to understand about those aspiring to be captain.

Zach Guthrie is closer to being captain of the GFC than him.

Thats my opinion 😉

Ps I still look fwd to Jack playing many good games of football for the GFC.

I said the concept is lunacy, that doesn’t equate to calling someone a moron. It clearly wasn’t a personal attack.
Nothing wrong with saying that IMO.

Seems like anytime someone says something even semi borderline they will promptly be reminded that big brother is watching.

Going directly at the person is one thing... but this is not that.

I love people having wildly different opinions... It makes for good reading and more traction on the board.

Correct.
Saying that "Projecting him to break into our leadership group or become a future captain is complete lunacy based on what he’s shown thus far" is a perfectly legitimate, non-abusive statement of a perfectly legitimate point of view.

Ultimately, it'll all come down to how he responds to the last 5 words in the italicised.

Bailey Humprey interview on SEN yesterday.

I get the feeling he thinks he will be selected by Gold Coast or Hawthorn.

That would be a bummer (for me) as he has been my hopeful target for a while now but I've always felt he won't get past the GC/Hawks and be available to us.

Humprey also is a Geelong supporter.

When asked if Essendon had talked to him much with #4 he let out more than the average straight bat answer and actually said that he feels the Dons are more into Phillipou or Tsatas at this stage.

When asked about the position he plays and the players he plays like he said he is probably seen more as a medium forward that pushes into the middle and he plays like Cripps when on ball and Petracca/DeGoey when forward.

He is the kid I won't most... Bring on the draft.

Yeah, I really like him too. Reminds me a lot of Aaron Hamill from back in the day.

Agree..clark might not end up being the best player from this draft but hes the safest pick in the top 15 besides ashcroft imo-ie the least risk of being a bust..and that has its appeal.

That in itself is an interesting definition .

If we looked back at all the drafts ... what number draft pick was the best player in the draft. ... It probably. gets distorted when the are Father Sons etc but i doubt GaryA was going first round in an op draft. That was a super draft. Was Joel the best in 2006 ?

How important is it to be the best player in the draft. The draft is a closed loop of players ... once drafted they are in a much bigger pool. Id imagine even AShcroft going on the Brisbane list would find that its tougher than he has had before. How many of our great players were ever the best player in their draft? A couple ? Probably depends on how good the draft is.

Was Mackie the best? Goddard or McViegh probably but he was pretty good..... but what more important is in 2002 ..4 players in the top 21 from that draft played less than 5 games. I can life with not being the best..but I could not be comforatble with that outcome for P8

It's now conventional wisdom on this forum that the draft is very shallow - only 3 good players I read in one post! I'm not disagreeing; I wouldn't know.

What does intrigue me is how these perceptions begin and gather steam; I'm assuming there a lot of unofficial talent-spotters out there who follow all the junior leagues closely.

But shallow or not, I'd be surprised if some good players, currently unheralded, don't emerge in time from next week's drafts. Think of Dane Rampe, just one of many excellent players found by the Swans later in the NAB draft or the rookie draft. Think of Brad Close.

No doubt some of those tipped to go top 20 in next week's draft will prove to be busts, but good players will emerge from the second and third rounds over time IMO.

In a similar vein, there’s always been far too much value placed on a first round pick. In the 2012-2016 (inclusive) drafts, only 50% of players selected in the top 20 have reached 100 games. It’s actually even less (47%) if you narrow it down to top 10 picks only.

If you have a look at some of the early phantom drafts from around Feb-Mar this year, some of the highest rated players have slid enormously on the back of a terrible year.

Guys like D'Aloia, Keeler, Kobe Ryan, Broadbent and Lemmey were all touted as top 10 prospects by some. Lemmey is now considered a 3rd-4th round prospect, Keeler was a Crows NGA and they didn't even bother to nominate him.

Some of these guys have had hugely disappointing years and there hasn't really been many bolters into the pointy end of the draft to replace them.

True enough, Boris. Of course Shifter Sheahan thinks they're all going to be stars!

My son, former poster Claude Balls, is forever telling me that the chances of getting a 200-game player plummet after Pick 2. Anyway, i do hope we get a good one with Pick 8.

Are there kids running dead from mid season on?lets face it their reward for excellence is normally a guaranteed stint with a busted arse club years off making finals or at times even wining a game. How early on are recruiters in these kids ears with a don't kill yourself we will take you with our pick (lets say 14) on form to date just finish the season in one piece.

Q. What's the difference between ET and Kiwis?
A. ET went home.

But in this case, the go-home factor for WA players is legit
LOL. Sorry bud. I am gonna call BS on that statement Vdubs.
There is always an element of a go somewhere factor if one's place isn't what they expect.
Happy players that are well remunerated, well looked after will stay 90% of the time.
We've drafted a few Sandgropers in my time with Tim Kelly being the only one wanting to head home.
As long as we don't draft another 23 year old with 3 kids with medical issues and a Mrs that wears the pants we are laughing.
Harry Taylor Mitch Duncan Sam Menegola stayed and most likely for less dollars.
There is a long list of quality players quite happy staying put says that statement is incorrect.
Paddy Cripps Liam Baker Shai Bolton Aaron Naughton Brandon Starcevich Will Powell Sam Taylor Sam P Pepper
Darcy Cameron Tim English Chad Warner
The go home factor didn't seem to sway them to leave to go home.
My statement is that. Happy players with thick wallets tend to stay lol.

I don't care/think much about the go-home factor.

If Mackie/Wells thinks a certain interstate player is the best player available... As long as there are no big red flags that they have picked up on... I'm all good taking the interstate kid.

If it's a 50/50 or very close to 50/50 sure take the local or Victorian kid.

You win some, you lose some... but most of them stay and I just want the best players we can get our hands on.

If you pick a gun and they leave at the very least you will be compensated well for them.

Get the best players you can I say and go from there.
