We don't have the luxury of timeframe to build these guys anymore

I know what you mean but id say we always have the time to develop properly. What we do not have is the time to put years into a string bean that will be overlooked by the mc. i think the change in body type probably signifies a slight swing towards contested ball. That inline with the noises coming from a few clubs that they will be moving towards a more contested games style. More around the ball... yippee

Yeah one thing I've really liked about our list management has been that we've identified one group at a time to work on since 2016ish.

We moved the defensive unit on in one go, then we moved the forward line around in one go. Now we're looking like we get some contested mids through in a block who can play vfl together for a year. Next year we add some wingers to that mix and we can move them through together.

Because mids are the most important group we see a year or two with top ten picks which we probably spend on best available mid. Two years from now we then go back to turning over the defensive unit again with a settled midfield/forward line unit and maybe trade for a Cameron replacement

A couple things you mention I resonate with. Drafting a group that comes thru together is undervalued imo. The emphasis on the correct inputs rather than just piggybacking the work others then becomes more important... so the group of second level coaches we have brought in seem to parallel that. The other point is the premiuim mids. My on going KPI is single figure draft picks to add high level quality , as I do not think there has been a Premiership side without that input. I'd say that probably means mids. The two most likely groups for the next couple of years are Dees and Dogs, and both have their share of early picks mids. They seem the most critical component of build a flag group. Somehow we need to add 3-5 mids that go to be AA type level. Can we add them thru R3 picks. Maybe. More likely is we add them with some early selected draftees.

I think we'll get the single figure picks regardless so I wouldn't be trying to expedite anything like that.

If he trying to expedite conversations with Tanner Bruhn though. He's played with a group of young Falcons we have in the list so the potential group cohesion that he may present gives us value over his basic trade cost. No indications he'd be into it but worth a shot.

Can we get Nic Nat for two years so Esava has someone worth learning from? Unrestricted free agent

Or we could just get rid of Sav.

Let’s do that instead
Out of all the hacks we’ve held on too long ie Koldashnij and the many Cowan types over the years.. Ratugolea is one I’m content with keeping here at least till he reaches free agency. If he hasn’t kicked on and might not then sure delist him but the potentials still there to breakout.

Cowan should never have stayed on the list for so long, Kolo might be frustrating but he’s a solid defender.
Sav offers nothing and is gifted games on potential, he’s never even dominated VFL.

expedite? Not sure what you think im suggesting but I probably would be for it. I think it esential we add premium single figure quality mids in the next group of drafts. Premierships are built around it ...how we get those picks is where we need the sugar to help the medicine go down.

By expedite I just mean Mackie should be on the phone immediately. Followed by a call from Stephens, then one from Stevens, then maybe a group call from Whyte, Knevitt, and Conway

A call to player X ..come on home? I think it will be easier to attract players once we have a better group of young talent... but maybe if the relationships are strong.

The way Id like to see it done will take multiple drafts, probably multiple years of non finals finishes before we accumulate enough high end talent to rebound. What i dread is that we have enough talent to keep us in the 7-10 range ..which is no where. So if there is any doubt I probably play the younger players, it probably cost us a bit short term. So many others clubs are willing to absorb the pain for a couple of years... I have little doubt Haw will drop and grab talent for 2-4 years. No tanking but certainly a focus on putting games into younger players if we see them as part of our 2026 side.

By then, the Demons era of dominance should be on the slide.

There will always be a group of sides... Id say the next 5 years Melb and WB look strong but Ess and Car look on track for their own zenith period in 2 or 3 years and other clubs will pop. Unless we flood our list with enough high end talent , as we did in the 99 06 period , then you probably will always be chasing our tail. Two picks in the top 25 like in 19 & 21 is the min we need over the next 3 plus drafts, and we probably need 3 to 4 picks in the top10 in that period... as every zenith side has their elite players that carry them over them line when it counts.

I like what we have done the last 3 or so years ..but we will always have our share of hits and misses, and the bad lucks stories mixed with the want aways. One can see we want to plug that a bit with our focus on return homes and Falcons at draft but there will be the odd Clark and Kelly.

That's alright though.

You can add weight, but not height.

Id need to see a lot more of him, he looked a good kick once he had the ball. Can he jump? Can he gain possession under AFL pressures. It would not surprise me if he could play more up the ground than a gorilla type. Like so many ..we need VFL games to make judgements.
