With the money in cricket i doubt he comes back but if he wants to i would enquire.

I looked it up last time he was raised and between base Victorian and big bash contracts he would be on over $200k, add match payments in and he might be earning over $300k already. What would you have to pay the guy to convince him to switch? $400k+, a lot of money for a Cat B rookie.

We don't need to pick him up on SSP to play. If he is on our VFL list he's now part of our top-up list.

Source: Monster top-up lists are on: AFL reveals COVID contingency plan
Only if wet nominate him to be part of the top up list

  • Clubs need to nominate a group of up to 20 top-up players for the "covid contingency list"
  • Player/s from that list are only available to train with the club when player availablity drops to 30 due to a combination of Covid health and safety protocols, injuries and general unavailability
  • Then, only of player availability drops below 28 (due to Covid health and safety protocols) will a top up player be eligible for selection, though AFL listed players are to be given priority

So there's no guarantees that top up players will actually play this season. Plus, while a player may be on one clubs top up list, they don't have exclusive or holding rights to them, and they can be picked up by another club during the mid-season or end of season draft

If we're serious about a player, in this case it's Fiore being discussed, the only way to be coming certain about his ability to play for the club is to pick him up via the SSP

If he is playing in our VFL side then he will be part of the top up list. Why would we select him SSP? He wouldn't get a look in with Hawkins, Cameron, Esava ahead of him.

In regards to red bold - it's not that simple, as previously explained
  • Clubs need to nominate a group of up to 20 top-up players for the "covid contingency list"
  • If we don't nominate him, he's not available
Last year we had 34 players as part of our VFL squad, so if we run with a similar number in the VFL squad this season, not all in that will be part of the top up list - the club has to nominate the 20 players they want

In regards to the black bold
  • We'd select him as a SSP if we/the club actually wants the ability to freely select him during the season
  • I dare say that the vast majority of players on the top up lists won't get used, as it's not get often that teams will have less than 28 players available for selection
  • If at this stage the club believes that's a role for Fiore going forward, not necessarily this year but next year & beyond, signing him via the SSP allows us the opportunity to hold somewhat hold him or at the very least put a contract in front of to retrain him on the list. If we don't do that then he's free to 17 other teams via the midseason draft or ND

Covid might not be the wrecking ball many think it will be. I think it was yesterdays herald sun that said 80% of players have already had covid. The WA teams being lower than those over east.

With potential natural immunity it shouldn't be an issue, and the doomsday scenario's of half teams missing due to covid infections most likely won't play out.

It's on the herald sun website for those that have access.

Correct which is why i think even though hes not a very good cricketer he will stay there.

For the record i would be looking at fiore as a defender (his preferred spot) as we need a key defender not a key forward.

You can be reinfected. Particularly a few months after the first time you get it.

Tommy won't play forever...but agree a KPD wouldn't go astray either.

I think you’d be trying to sell him on the long term. His future in cricket is uncertain, does he believe he’s good enough to play afl? Long term he could earn more and be more secure.
But it’s a risk for him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get a bbl contract next season.
It’s a lonely place playing shield cricket all summer.

Id doubt it would be just money. If he is happy playing the level of cricket he is then he probably stays with it .. if he had aspirations of baggy green maybe he gets to a point where he decides to switch. Im not sure why but for his name to be mentioned in the media...some one with a closer link to him..must have a feel that its a possibility that he might come back to footy at some stage. At what stage is it too late ? I think he would have been 2017 draft ...22 and 1/2 now. Once he gets to mid 20s it probably gets hard.

22 turning 23 in Oct

If cricket is his main love & he doesn't necessarily see a Baggy Green in his future, he may shift his focus to the shorter formats, as there's money to be made playing the T20 circuit

He’s still very young but Sutherland doesn’t look any chance for the test team and that’s his best format.
He’s older than Cameron Green who he’s competing for a spot with in the test team. He’s not a good t20 player there would be so many others in front of him for any international t20 leagues.

For Brisbane ...could it happen again to them.

A potential #1 pick electing to not go to Brisbane? Would playing at North be enticing enough to knock back Father Son. If he did land at North ..it would put him aside Horne Francis and Philips and a couple others like Goater who could be very good.

Of course thats all based on the idea that a Melb club has first pick... id imagine if West Coast fell to 18...the Lions would again look the best option.

If he doesnt go to Brisbane .... how does that affect their need for points?

As it stands.... we have a pick in the 30's, 40's and 2 in the 50's. and Brisbane have something in each round. Not really what we need imo.I was hoping we might be able to trade for their R1 ... if Ashcroft is #1 , they would have a situation similar to the Dogs or Pies where they would need points for any early bid. They have another kid Fletcher... but at this stage his predicted range is less known perhaps late r1.

It will be a situation worth following as the year progresses.

Talk last year was that we should be all over local Jhye Clark. The only problem is he's currently touted as a top 10 pick.

Think we'd trade out everything bar our R1 to get the Lion's first, then combine both to trade into the top 10 to grab him?

(This isn't taking things like Henry or Bruhn wanting to come to the Cats - if that happens, all bets are off!)

Top10 picks are extremely hard to aquire unless a club has to move them for Father Son type reasons. If clubs trade to get a player like Cerra last year etc ... so it may be worth a try ..but trading two late R1's for a top pick is not certainty. The picks we generally have we get access to good kids.. it would be great if we could get a low flyer

If Bruhn wanted to move ..and he named us ..he would cost at least our r1...I cant see GWS gifting him to us.

Yeah, it's difficult to do. Plus, you've got to weigh up if burning all that draft capital is worth it for one kid. I don't know anything about Clark but people seemed very keen on him and not just because he's a Geelong boy.

Ha, if Bruhn wants to join... "that'll be 3 R1s, please".

Bruhn is very similar to Caldwell.

Essendon sent pick No.29 and its future second-round selection to GWS in exchange for Caldwell, pick No.44 and No.74.

Caldwell drafted at pick 11 and played 11 games over his first 2 afl seasons with 137 disposals.

Bruhn pick 12 and has played 13 games in this first year with 101 disposals.

If he continues at that rate those trades would be awfully similar, he needs to improve dramatically in his second year and he won’t with so many other mids coming back/drafted this season.

The same people who think we could get Clark also thought we were a chance of getting Walsh.
It just won’t happen

13 games in year one.... caldwelll 2 in year 1 ... I think we are looking at a player that may play most games this year...and will cost more.
