What would the right offer be in Bulldogs eyes? Likely pick 7 and whatever Sav comp we get, I imagine.

Would that be win-win? It's a hefty price to pay but he does still have potential to be one of the best mids in the comp. He's not there yet though, so surely isn't worth two first-rounders + change.

Taranto went for 12 and 19, but had still achieved a bit more I reckon, and of course 7 is a step up from 12.

2 x first rounders since he's contracted. It's what they asked for Dunkley in a similar situation.

So pick 21, 17 and spare change for Dunkley in the end. He had just come off a 25 disposal, 1.4 goal/assist a game season too. Lower ceiling but more proven quality football behind him.

Pick 7 in my eyes is a lot juicier than these pick 15-20s. So it carries more weight as a starting point.

any chance to link the podcast ? Seems to be yet another X thing that only those with accounts can listen to.

For the right deal you are gone....sort of says they might take less to move him. If the Dogs really just want him gone .. I wonder if we split our R1 and added a Fr2 ... would that get it done.
No idea on the podcast - there seems to be a lot asking for a link as they can't find it on Spotify

That was Dunkley out of contract though. When Dunkley wanted out to Essendon the year before they asked for 2 firsts knowing Essendon had top 10 pick.

Any deal for Smith may also be somewhat connected to Croft's decision - if he decides to nominate as an F&S pick, then not sure they'd be wanting to receive to many picks in that 15 - 25 range will get chewed up the bid for Croft

BUT if Croft decides to test the open draft market, they may be happier to receive a couple of picks in that range to have a few bites at things, or to even try trading up

Fortunately or unfortunately for the Bulldogs and Croft is that they are stacked at FF/CHF
Naughton, JUH and Sam Darcy with Lobb being your break glass option.
His (Croft) opportunity up forward is somewhat limited in the next 3-4 even 5 years if the latter two kick on as expected.
If they opt in on Croft i can see Naughton being offered up to Wet Toast in an attempt to pry Harley Reid from them.
Along with a pick or two... (10+17??)
Not a bad haul getting the best player and 2nd best forward in the draft.
Then there is Bailey Smith and what he may bring.
They are in an interesting position.
Oh and if this comes up in this weeks Trade Radio segment... Hope they give me some acknowledgment lol.

Not that I have an opinion on it but Geelong's name very very quiet this time around.

Perhaps the mid-bottom tier Geelong that has been predicted for so long might be finally arriving. I actually don't have a problem with it, so long as they decide on a strategy and stick to it.

coming from that Whispering tosser means it is 99% bull shit and there isn't even a podcast

That's the beauty of this time of year - the rumours are good for a laugh

Would he leave though considering his old man's connection to the doggies, pretty big name at Whitten oval!! Doggies wouldn't want to see that happen.
his old man dislikes Bevo and has been vocal publicly about what he sees at poor treatment for his son from memory..
I don't think the West family would have any issue with him leaving

Yeah kinda agree with you there.
But i have a sneaky feeling things are getting done behind closed doors.
We going to full on Rebuild ??
No, it is gonna be more of the same... a renovation or refurbishment of sorts.

Pick 7 is 1644 points, arout pick 18 + 28 combined. We paid around 2000 points for Cameron because we received two second round picks back and none of the first rounders we gave up were top 10. I realise contracted vs restricted free agent affects these values but still.

Taranto was 2200 points, with a B&F in the bag and a stronger 2022 than Smith's 2023. Around 1700 for Dunkley under similar circumstances (they got two picks back).

How many points do we think the Bulldogs actually expect for Smith if he is keen to leave, a year before he is a free agent? 3000 plus? That's a lot for potential. I would've thought around the Taranto mark is more realistic, which would be pick 7 + pick 30ish. If we had pick 16 as our highest, it would be different.

I think it'd depend on if Doggies are motivated to move him or not.

If they do want to move him, then a scenario like yours could work, but I think they will ask for massive overs to let him out of contract and thus the trade won't get done as I doubt we give up something like our F1 as well as pick 7.

Trade 7 this year if there is not full value in keeping it and push it into Fr1 and Fr2 for next year.

2 x Rd 1 and 2 x Rd2 in 2024 could be very handy for the kitty.

Go Catters

Not sure West would be on our radar? He's a similar size / type to Jyhe Clark, although I think we all hope that Clark has a much better start to his career. Every game West plays in the hoops would be game time / games played that potentially get sucked from Clark?

In terms of what next year looks like I think Geelong would be thinking something along the lines of:

  • Cam Guthrie means we get an AA and B&F winner in a premiership year back into that midfield. Massive tick right there and people may under-estimate how big a loss he was. Take that caliber of player out of most midfields and they hurt, particularly when our back up stocks were low.
  • Jyhe Clark has big wraps on him. He is what we lack - inside grunt / in and under / with a dose of class. More game time from him and we'll start to rebuild the midfield depth.
-- Tanner Bruhn started to look like a Geelong player and appeared to "fit" by the end of his first year. He'll get better - but the question really is how much better - and how quickly.
-- Max Holmes will move back to the wing (hopefully) where he's best suited / and of most value for us.
-- Blicavs playing more football (hopefully) will give us greater midfield depth, and greater flexibility. He left a big hole when he was out.
-- Dangerfield is perhaps the biggest question mark for me heading into 2024. His best is good enough - how often can he reproduce it? personally, I think he should start and split more time between midfield and inside 50. Maybe 8-10 mins in the midfield - but as a resting forward he has the ability to be very dangerous and that's a skill we already know he has. His days of pure midfield are just about done though I think. The great advantage he provides though is that, as a resting forward, he's more dangerous than a lot of other midfielders that don't have that string to their bow.
-- Bowes and Duncan rotating midfield minutes and off half back is a pretty good advantage that we have. The run off half back becomes important with Smith's retirement. What role does Mullin play?
-- Atkins is still handy in the midfield, but I reckon his strength is his ability to adapt to different roles dependent on where he's needed. Not sure it's the best thing for the club if he's effectively full time midfield.
-- Knevitt and Dempsey fighting it out for wing / half forward role with the retirement of Smith. If we're going to improve - one / or both of those players needs to take a big step forward for us in 2024.

This year’s quietness has less to do with determined strategy and more to do with circumstance: poor draft hand and thin player movement market. Expect a busy 2024.

The elephant or elephants in the room though are
1. How bad his relationships at the Dogs are.
2. His off field issues and relatively poor form.

I think his value has dropped. Bulldogs fans would not share the view. I would not entertain trading Holmes for anybody. He is a keeper.

Straight swap hey? Mmmm... Chuck in Busslinger and we have a deal!!! lol

Not saying its what we do...just ..rel to the previous post ... What would the right offer be in Bulldogs eyes? ... Id think they would say thats a good trade if it involved Max. After that GF day performance... and Smith being a little on the nose ... I doubt it would be much different in trade atm ..especially while he is contracted.

Next year both OOC..who knows what either player think then. ..for the moment it would have to be a a huge win for Geelong to agree to let Max go while contracted.

I know it's trade time and our thoughts to turn to weird and wonderful scenarios, but anyone contemplating a Holmes / Smith swap is on the wacky tobaccy.

Why would anyone remotely consider trading Holmes out and Smith in when it's effectively a straight swap for the one position on the ground ...... wing / midfield. Neither club really wins. Selfishly, if we kept Holmes and gained Smith on the opposite wing (to replace I Smith) then I'd do whatever is within our means for that trade. It gives us 2 quality players who can play similar roles and who have both shown they can perform well enough with midfield minutes in the guts.

But swapping each from their respective clubs is never going to happen.
