Trade 7 this year if there is not full value in keeping it and push it into Fr1 and Fr2 for next year.
2 x Rd 1 and 2 x Rd2 in 2024 could be very handy for the kitty.
Go Catters
The elephant or elephants in the room though are
1. How bad his relationships at the Dogs are.
2. His off field issues and relatively poor form.
I think his value has dropped. Bulldogs fans would not share the view. I would not entertain trading Holmes for anybody. He is a keeper.
Where are we getting 10 from?Smith plus 17 for 7, 10 and F2?

Not sure West would be on our radar? He's a similar size / type to Jyhe Clark, although I think we all hope that Clark has a much better start to his career. Every game West plays in the hoops would be game time / games played that potentially get sucked from Clark?
In terms of what next year looks like I think Geelong would be thinking something along the lines of:
-- Tanner Bruhn started to look like a Geelong player and appeared to "fit" by the end of his first year. He'll get better - but the question really is how much better - and how quickly.
- Cam Guthrie means we get an AA and B&F winner in a premiership year back into that midfield. Massive tick right there and people may under-estimate how big a loss he was. Take that caliber of player out of most midfields and they hurt, particularly when our back up stocks were low.
- Jyhe Clark has big wraps on him. He is what we lack - inside grunt / in and under / with a dose of class. More game time from him and we'll start to rebuild the midfield depth.
-- Max Holmes will move back to the wing (hopefully) where he's best suited / and of most value for us.
-- Blicavs playing more football (hopefully) will give us greater midfield depth, and greater flexibility. He left a big hole when he was out.
-- Dangerfield is perhaps the biggest question mark for me heading into 2024. His best is good enough - how often can he reproduce it? personally, I think he should start and split more time between midfield and inside 50. Maybe 8-10 mins in the midfield - but as a resting forward he has the ability to be very dangerous and that's a skill we already know he has. His days of pure midfield are just about done though I think. The great advantage he provides though is that, as a resting forward, he's more dangerous than a lot of other midfielders that don't have that string to their bow.
-- Bowes and Duncan rotating midfield minutes and off half back is a pretty good advantage that we have. The run off half back becomes important with Smith's retirement. What role does Mullin play?
-- Atkins is still handy in the midfield, but I reckon his strength is his ability to adapt to different roles dependent on where he's needed. Not sure it's the best thing for the club if he's effectively full time midfield.
-- Knevitt and Dempsey fighting it out for wing / half forward role with the retirement of Smith. If we're going to improve - one / or both of those players needs to take a big step forward for us in 2024.
Pick 7 is 1644 points, arout pick 18 + 28 combined. We paid around 2000 points for Cameron because we received two second round picks back and none of the first rounders we gave up were top 10. I realise contracted vs restricted free agent affects these values but still.
Taranto was 2200 points, with a B&F in the bag and a stronger 2022 than Smith's 2023. Around 1700 for Dunkley under similar circumstances (they got two picks back).
How many points do we think the Bulldogs actually expect for Smith if he is keen to leave, a year before he is a free agent? 3000 plus? That's a lot for potential. I would've thought around the Taranto mark is more realistic, which would be pick 7 + pick 30ish. If we had pick 16 as our highest, it would be different.
Yeah that sounds about right. It completely depends whether their perspective is "we hate to lose him now but realise it's best to get a deal done" or "there's absolutely no way we're letting him go now except for generous overs".I think the point they were making was not a comparison to what Dunkley eventually was traded for, but what the dogs knocked back the year before.
I think 7 and a F2 is around the mark. But the dogs might say 2 firsts or we’re not even considering it (like they did with Dunkley). In which case we’ll struggle to get the deal done.
Exactly. We effectively trade 7 for 10 and 17 and then give 10 back as part of the Smith trade. We retain 17.
IN other words - Dogs - 7 and f2 - Cats - pick 17 plus Smith
Rhylee won’t be leaving the bulldogs.his old man dislikes Bevo and has been vocal publicly about what he sees at poor treatment for his son from memory..
I don't think the West family would have any issue with him leaving
7 for 10 and 17 ?
10 and Fr2. for Smith ...
Yes I think we can put as good a starting 22 out there as any side come round one. Big questions are where do the magnets best go on the board, and how much luck do we get to consistently put our "best 22" out there?Great post JJ.
Agree on West - he's clever but lacks pace and size , we are well covered for the role he would play.
B Smith with his mind right definitely improves our MF , we should go hard if he's gettable.
Run and distribution off half back is a crucial area for Geelong. We are at our best when our forwards get quick entry and can go to work.
We had it with Wojo ( run and carry) and Josh Hunt ( 60m low bullets) and with Duncan ( quality ball use) and Smith ( run and carry).
What I wouldn't give to have a Hayden Young / K Coleman or Saad type player to play that role for us.
I think we picked Murdoch for that type but he hasn't come on this season from what I've seen in the 2's.
Mullin could provide a Wojo type or even O'Connor could play with more dare but replacing Smith who is a run 15m kick 55m type will be hard.
I think the there is some bargains to be had if we can be patient and wait for next year. After seeing the under 17s game on Saturday I'm even more convinced about waiting for next year. If we were one or two spots higher this year it would be different, but I just think we miss the top echelon unfortunately.
I would try
Pick 7 and FR2 to Richmond for pick 26 and FR1. (Richmond more likely to want Caddy than us)
Ratagolea and 26 to Port for 38 and FR1
Gives us 3 1st round picks in 2024 which opens up all kinds of options in a better draft and with some higher quality players potentially on the market.
Think there's a chance we'll leave a list spot open now that mid year trades are a thing. With Blicavs as back up, I think we'll risk not taking a back up ruck for the sake of a list spot and we can fill it mid year if we need to.How would we fill the (5) open list spots then with effectively 1 draft pick this year? Would have to promote Dempsey to satisfy minimum two picks in the draft, and would need to find some FAs (including delisted ones) to plug some of the other spots, and leave a couple open.
The overpayment for pick 25 from Brisbane last year is starting to bite. I hope the Lions return the favour at some point.

That’s embedded in the thin market I mentioned. Nothing worth chasing.Probably right...I was hoping it shows they are being selective.
That would surely get the Smith deal over the line tooI remember a few years ago we were linked to Haynes, which none of us believed.
Would we be interested in taking him and 3/4 of his salary and pick 15
We give up a fr2 or 3
Looking forward to how the footy world with contracts and trade is starting to evolve
oh FWIW i don't think we will look at West, was more just saying that he doesn't like BevoNot sure West would be on our radar? I know it's trade time and our thoughts to turn to weird and wonderful scenarios, but anyone contemplating a Holmes / Smith swap is on the wacky tobaccy.
Why would anyone remotely consider trading Holmes out and Smith in when it's effectively a straight swap for the one position on the ground ...... wing / midfield. Neither club really wins. Selfishly, if we kept Holmes and gained Smith on the opposite wing (to replace I Smith) then I'd do whatever is within our means for that trade. It gives us 2 quality players who can play similar roles and who have both shown they can perform well enough with midfield minutes in the guts.
But swapping each from their respective clubs is never going to happen.
That was my thinking.
