Best case would be to get Oliver, almost at any cost.
But absolute clear second best case would be for us to use pick 7 to help facilitate the Oliver trade for another club where we can push for overs.
Maybe Smith and a pick back for 7 or something like that, if he would chose the dogs for example.
We should stay interested in whatever the outcome is and look to be a player in it.
It gets down to the details. 8 years is a long time. He might have agreed to less in the short term. You’d think that might put a little squeeze on their SC?
There’s no way we’re getting Smith for 7 alone, let alone getting a pick coming back with him.
How are lord/Dursma a safer bet than Smith?
Only one of them has proven they’ve got what it takes to be a top level AFL player, and they don’t play for port.

Yeah, Oliver has certainly created more opportunity to land Smith if the dogs go chasing him in any way. The same opportunity the negotiations with Timmy & Jamarra may create through pressure on list management. One would think if it was just smith and smith alone ... dogs hold the whip. If they needed to find a good pick to get Oliver done ...maybe it changes a bit... but hawks are interested too. We are not the only bed in town.
A moon boot on him would come up to his armpit.Nick Watson in a moon boot atm.
They make them for children too you knowA moon boot on him would come up to his armpit.
So your saying we’re a chanceNick Watson in a moon boot atm.
Premierships are bloody hard to win. I would trade 7 and F1 for Oliver in a heartbeat. Add Oliver and a fit Guthrie to the midfield, and tell me that’s not a roaring engine room.

It's not a roaring engine room. Guthrie is 31 and hasn't played for a year. Danger is creaking. The ruck situation is Stanley past his best, and a very green Conway. Apart from Atkins, all the other options are at the start or the end of their careers.Premierships are bloody hard to win. I would trade 7 and F1 for Oliver in a heartbeat. True... but we will have a better and improved version of Tanner Bruhn and Max Holmes which along with a returning Guthrie improves our midfield group. It's not a roaring engine room. I very much doubt they are going to tell teams to stop asking the question regarding Smith, in regards to Oliver we have no chance of landing him, his asking price will be insane and doubt the club would feel comfortable with the term and $$, would be on a million a year easy.I'm now hearing that Connors (and possibly Bailey Smith) will make comment in the next 24-48 hours to formally stamp out any discussion around Smith leaving the Dogs this trade period. There's been some discussions in the last few days between all parties and clubs are now effectively being told Smith is a required player, and to stop asking the question. Disappointing if true.
Never say never, but I think if they come out with a firm statement like that then we need to accept that it's no deal this year and we turn our attention to other options. Compare that to the Oliver situation and Melbourne F.C choosing to say nothing, and we potentially have two different situations playing out. Don't think we've got enough aces up our sleeve to get that deal done though.

Only passing on what I've been told, and I think it's changed a bit this week. It seems Geelong (and other clubs) are waving the white flag on dragging Smith away from the Dogs this year. If that's the case, I'm comfortable enough with my source to accept that's what's happening.I very much doubt they are going to tell teams to stop asking the question regarding Smith, in regards to Oliver we have no chance of landing him, his asking price will be insane and doubt the club would feel comfortable with the term and $$, would be on a million a year easy.
For headlines, its great business. Dragging it out means extra weeks of AFL owning the news. Why does the AFL make draft week so long - it's taking the piss. Force clubs to get serious and do it over 3 days maximum. If you can't organise s**t in that time then move on.
Wouldn't it be a bit weird to wave the white flag already? We haven't even started the trade period yet.Only passing on what I've been told, and I think it's changed a bit this week. As much as we want him, and possibly Oliver, there's also a chance we revisit this discussion in a few years and breathe a big sigh of relief that we dodged bullets on both fronts.
Oliver is a very good player, the current talk of him being one of the all time great players for the demons took me by surprise.
Not taking anything away from him but that’s embarrassing for the demons if that really stacks up. He’s not even the best player in their team currently.
