As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Anyone else starting to get strong vibes that Allen will be our first pick?
Very Geelong pick, I.e. high risk:high reward/upside type. Not even invited to draft night (remind you of anyone?).
It is all just smoke and mirrors about us being linked to Clark and Tsatas etc. We are usually tight lipped.
We have a long history of doing this with our early first picks:

I) 2002: Andrew Mackie - didn’t play national u-18s, not invited to draft combine
II) 2005: Travis Varcoe - wiped out for most of the year with a foot injury, limited exposure
III) 2006: Joel Selwood - we all know this story
IV) 2007: Harry Taylor - plucked as a 21 year old from the WAFL
V) 2009: Mitch Brown - not selected in Sandringham Dragons team until a late growth spurt and good school footy
VI) 2014: Nakia Cockatoo - genuine bolter, late late invite to draft night
VII) 2019: Cooper Stephens - did not play in his draft year due to broken leg, highly touted from underage year
VIII) 2020: Max Holmes - genuine bolter, limited exposure yet excellent athletic traits

There are others I may have missed/don’t know their back story.
Add Lang who broke his leg in his draft year. Smedts was injured early and had a ridiculously good combine. Jordy Clark was
An absolute late bolter after doing no preseason as an Australian cricketer.

It’s undeniable we have a type.

We have a type when it comes to late first round/early second round picks trying to pry through and find a gem who fell through the cracks… I doubt our angle of approach will be as risk taking when it comes to an earlier selection.

Joel selwood was one of the best performing underage players we have seen and a dead set gun before his injury ( better underage stats than Marc Murphy in his draft year as no1). I don’t think bartel was left field or a bolter, and neither Joel Corey.

Reality is we have had to try and be creative and more risk taking with our hand of picks the past decade

I DO NOT THINK ALLEN IS INVITED ON MONDAY NIGHT. Unless someone want him at the last minute it will not happen.

I get the feeling Mackie is a little more orthodox than Wells. Our draft haul last year was Knevitt, Conway, Willis, Kroeger. All were fairly well known quantities.

Not Jhye’s fault or in the least bit relevant to him as a player but the local angle hasn’t worked as well from a draft perspective. Maybe let them go and only trade the good ones back. 😂

The stats say we do bias locals now. We really have gone local an overwhelmingly overweight percentage in drafts. Stephens, Lang, Smedts, Knevitt, Conway, Stewert, Whyte, Brownless, Henry, Simpson, Miers, House, Abbott, Ruggles, Atkins, Fort, Schlenshog.

Throw in the interstates and there is something we just don’t like about Melbourne kids.

and half of those picks are gone anyway

Definitely an element of truth to that I absolutely agree. You’re going to miss big or get an absolute cracker which we have done over the last 16 years. However we are probably running at 50% with the top 10 picks. Mackie and Cockatoo were complete shocks.

No right or wrong but it’s different why we do. I wouldn’t be shocked one but if we took Ed Allan or Ginbey or Busslinger.

I'll raise you Bartel, Ablett's, Scarlett and Ling.

Invitees to draft night don't mean much.

Cockatoo wasn't invited either iirc

It means a lot when the afl want to parade the top 10 on stage as a collective. Cockatoo was flown in at the last minute for this very reason.
Put it this way. I'll eat 12 straw hats if we don't select Clark.

Not saying it’s right or wrong but I feel we are doing it at a much much higher percentage per pick now than then.

I think in that argument we should exclude NGAs and F/S as by nature they should be closer to home.
Imo we've done pretty well.

As for NGA we have a very capable one next year.
