As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

I think it is alright to rest the number for a bit, but ultimately no player is greater than the club, someone else will one day have a story to be written to add to the history of number 14 at the Geelong football club. Might be a draftee or like number 5 someone we trade in, in either case they'd see Joel's name in their locker, and it might inspire them to go a little further.

100%

Imagine if they retired 5 after. Polly or after senior . I don't mind a little breathing space given out of respect for a quality player but all the numbers were someone else's before and will be after any name on our list. if we retired every number after 300 games for example we would not no have Stewart in 44.

Think it’d be neat if we gave the 14 to the new Irish lad plenty of fans getting around with the number on their back reckon both would appreciate it.
We recruited a professional that's physically developed and knows how to prepare.

A lot of those 18yo draftees are still learning that aspect.

And that's why I reckon he will get games most likely first, much like he we threw Blitz in his first year to the wolves and he just ran with it.

2022 still ...I guess.

I see from the paper 2023 best 35 prospects ... and no Falcons mentioned....

I guess Id ask does anyone see our lake of picks next year as a big deal?

We will bring picks in. Guys like sav and fringe players will generate some picks and we can always trade 2024 picks into 2023 if we want.

Plausible. Although Id think IF the 2023 draft is better than 2024...(who knows). then it might be difficult to trade into the 2023 draft.

Yes fringe player will give us some late picks of debatable worth ... but its probably going to cost us a significant player to give us anything that will allow us to draft a player in the top30

I'd like us to have a couple of DFA running around in our VFL ... It seems to me that players of significant talent are delisted early ..and maybe with maturity better than plus 30 in the draft anyway.

The Sav one will be a watch I guess. If nothing changes he goes for SFA

Basically I agree with you , geelong will have no probably adding players. ... its more the early names mentioned do not have a falcon that drew my attection. We have been so Falcon focused in recent years ..its probably not a bad thing to look elsehwere... although I think Godfather mention he knew of one Falcon that was probably a stealth pick atm

If it wasn’t for his 2021 season, Lemmey probably wouldn’t have been drafted this year.
Very true but I gues at 47 they felt he was worth the gamble. Leemey V Foster will be interesting as they were at least in the same range.

It shows to some degree how speculative drafting is. Is it any wonder why we have tried to look at older options. ..along with careful younger selections. Maybe so are just too young when drafted and not ready for the AFL commitment.. Maybe when others improve and match natural talent..some can elevate.

I dare say if we went back only a few years other clubs would have taken Holmes and Dek a lot earlier.. and there would be players highly rated not taken at all . Would not go McAsey R1 ..thats for sure.

It seems like some kids dominate against the lesser talents, others rise to the challenge in a pro system. And some just fall away for what ever reason ...but whos to say what they will be in a few years time. Tom Stewart played for the Falcons.. I cant remember him ever being rated in the first couple of rounds... in fact mentioned at all but he probably has outperformed most from the 2011 draft...

In the end would it surprise if Leemey at 47 ends up being looked on as a bargain or a fail? Is Carlton the right club for him. Maybe it takes 1 or 2 clubs and a few years for him to become a player... or maybe we see him come and go like so many.

Typically, these kids that are highly rated earlier in the year and slide end up proving the recruiters right. Can Taheny was touted a top 5 pick and he did nothing for us. Jonty Scharenberg was a top 5 prospect, went undrafted and has had an ordinary SANFL career. Chook might be another example.

Is Bowes a good runner? I got the feeling he was moved to HBF because he didn’t have the running capacity to play midfield.
I thought he was, but maybe I'm wrong. I thought AFL stats shared that running data... seems they don't, would be good if they did.

He had a lot of injuries though. Off a good pre season hopefully his tank improves.

I don't think Bowes or Bruhn will be darting past many to pickup outside handball receives.

Bowes is at least a bigger body (+ taller) and looks like will be trying for an inside mid-spot.

Bowes should be looking to use that nice evasive balk he has in those tight contested situations.

I don't think he would be a better than average runner though (speed or endurance)... Hopefully with a big preseason he can take it up a level or two.

Will be great having Ben McKay and Tom De Koning in 2024

Good enough evidence for me

Love to see Mackie in the Addy saying we will continue to be aggressive with trades and FA. Also hinting that we ‘ask the question‘ of players moving around just to promote the idea of us being a destination club. Ha!
