Re - work back end any deals
It's not cap space. We have cap space.

It's what we're willing to offer within our pay structure. It always is with us.

Enright is driving talks with Flanders, Merritt and Butters.

They want to flick Marshall our way and use some of they get for Ryan. Leek aleer price has dropped.

Aleer will be cheap because he is ooc.
They are zero chance of getting Butters and about 2 % chance of gc releasing Flanders. Merritt if he leaves will look for a successful club not st kilda (and essendon wont trade him either). Good job Boris.

Yeah we can offer Butters 2 mil. Whether we would change the culture to that though i dont know.

Based on the reported rich list released on the weekend, not sure too many names above will really move the needle in terms of opposing salary space.

Pike isn't going to create either salary space or a list space - he's a rookie on a bare bones contract. Similar sorry for Clohesy who's also currently a rookie, while Wiltshire & Stevens are second year players still on their fixed contracts

And unless there's a significant legal announcement within the next 4 weeks, Bruhn will be on the list next year

And in terms of salary for Butters, the recent reports suggest that the money being offered by Port is approaching somewhere near $1.8 million, and that's on the back of NWM getting that crazy $2million deal from St Kilda - so it's also not just about "opening salary space", but changing how we've structured our salary cap if we're suddenly offering contracts of that magnitude

Trade wise?

It's surely not a hard trade to get done, but the reported money is crazy - somewhere between $800k & $900k per season

Future 2nd.

GC, Sydney or Geelong
You would think Gold Coast will be a no , as they have got plenty of depth and options.
Sydney seem the most logical one.
But if he wants to come to Geelong, Geelong will find a way to try and get him. But what that deal is? That's what Mackie will need to sus out

The landscape is changing we will need to adapt or get “c” grade replacements like Worpel
I don't disagree, but that's not what you said.

FWIW, Worpel is a mid level replacement no matter what the financial climate of the league is.

He's a 6.5/10 FA addition for nothing. That's what he's for. It's what all of them are across the league outside of Lynch to Richmond.

You can believe whatever you want. Keeping Nas and getting in DK has made them more attractive. They aimed to make a splash and have certainly done that

It has done nothing for them but create a scenario where any player who considers st kilda is expecting massive overs or they will feel insulted.

I would agree with the idea they are now more attractive, if people weren’t so aware of the massive overs st kilda gave.

It’s like saying GCS was a destination club for giving gaz 1.7m.

It just looks desperate

This was off the top of my head, just that a handful have one lock and maybe one or two that are debatable. There are other candidates but I wasn't out to complete a 50,000 word dissertation.

A lot of teams that miss out every year will meet this requirement too (2+ players in the top 30, or close). You might even say more teams than not each year fit the bill. So there isn't really any more of a causal link than there is having a really solid spine, amazing depth, a brilliant coach or simply finding form at the correct time.

We ran the premiers exceptionally close last year and some would argue we only had one lock in this top 20-30 range (Cameron). I would argue Holmes and Stengle were close enough, but few would have called them superstars of the comp.

It goes without saying you need some A and B graders assorted in the right combination with role players. An abundance of star power I wouldn't necessarily say is a requisite.
I think we’re just about in furious agreement. Broadly speaking.

I will find out for certain but last time I heard he was leaning towards the dogs rather than us because of money. It was substantially better than what we pay apparently.

His first choice is Geelong. I don't think we can compete unless something changes.
The same Dogs with Bont, a massively overpaid Naughton, an even more overpaid JUH, Libba, Tim “AA” English, Richards (next contract), Darcy (next contract) and a few other generously paid persons on their list already… they’re the ones with the cash available to blow us out of the water money-wise?

I know we actually have the space and it’s more about fitting into the pay structure… but I would’ve thought a guy like Butters would still warrant an attractive offer at the very top of our range, that the “bursting at the seams” Dogs should struggle to beat by much??

Enright? Media seems to have anointed him Ross's successor. Any truth to that? Always good to see ex-Cats flourish..
Yeah I was thinking if he was looking into the future at his ascension. Putting together a core of high-caliber players like some NBA teams have done. I was also half thinking he should be very wary of inheriting a list of long-term contracts from Ross. Interesting.

You'd think with getting all those well-known recruits they are betting on selling many more memberships as well?

How does targeting players they will never get help them be more attractive? It's just them trying to be seen to do something. It's pointless.

Sure but we have 2 late r1s and they wont trade him for that. They aren't picking up the phone unless we offer Holmes sdk or O'Sullivan's and we wont do that so its a waste of time a trade wont happen.

Isn’t that my point, I literally said what you just said?

We have picks, they just aren’t the picks Carlton want and I highly doubt we are that interested in Charlie anyway.
Not with what they will ask for.

When people say we have “nothing” what they mean is “we have nothing in terms of draft capital to bring in contracted Star talent”

We absolutely have capital to bring in good to great talent. We literally did it last offseason with Baz. Pick 17 for a AFLCA Medallist and top 3 Brownlow contender.

Makes sense to me that they'd just play hardball for a bit with us and end up taking the best offer they can get for RoMa, then get cracking with the players they are trying to get in.

They’d be dumb to draw it out, they need that time to negotiate with other clubs for the contracted guys they want to bring in,
They don’t want to get bogged down in a battle of chicken with MackAttack. They know that’s a losing battle, they need the capital to get moving on other players.

We've been chasing Rowan since 2022, Rowan knows we value him and the interest will always be there.
It’s the Saints who would be the problem in any of this, they are the ones trying to go full overhaul mode and bring in a bunch of guys. The onus is on them to get the wheels turning on multiple fronts.

Turns out Ross is not the driving force behind there big moves.. but one of our own. They have a few big plays in the background at the moment that I'm not allowed to say

And Marshall is definitely gettable.
Boris driving the bus huh throwing the weight around....

Good on him
