Injury aside, I don’t agree with this.

Xerri is 26 and was nowhere until the last two seasons. Could’ve easily been AA this year.

Meek is 27 and a similar story. Not as good as Xerri, but took as long.

In fact, I’d argue Grundy is really the only “recent” ruck who came in and killed it inside his first 50-70 games.
Killed it within their first 50 games, not many players do that in any position let alone a key position player.
But that’s different to not even playing during that period, to get to that many games that’d take Conway into his 9th or 10th season if he suddenly had a good run from next season.

Xerri was actually performing well for a while but was stuck under Goldstein. Lots of other rucks have come in at a younger age and performed. Grundy, Gawn, Jackson, Darcy and plenty of others.

I don’t have anything against Conway it’s just really hard to see everything going well for him from here to make it.
Hope I’m wrong

Conway in terms of ability is on the right trajectory. But I share concerns with a big man repetitively breaking down and having persistent foot injuries.

Ruck is a brutal position and I think really takes durable players to succeed. I wouldn’t pull the pin just yet but I’d not be making plans around him being available either. He needs a least a season or two of solid VFL form with cameos in the AFL.

Marshall will be over 30 before he’d even play a game at Geelong. I note the story said the cats would be paying a 1st round pick!

With all due respect Marshall isn’t in the top 10 of AFL ruckman and is already 30. I like him and if we got a pick in the 20s back then maybe but I’d be passing on that mentioned deal.

You simply don’t waste 1st Rd picks or million dollar contracts on ruckman.

Story said "Starting point would be a 1st" doesn't mean that would be the final deal.

We've been lucky that Blitz has been able to cover the cracks of our ruck division since Ottens has retired to some extent.

Which 10 rucks do you think are better better than Marshall? I’d only put Gawn, Grundy, Xerri and Jackson clearly ahead of him.

I rate Marshall around the same as TDK and Witts, and higher than Meek and English.

I reckon Mackie has proven a strong negotiator in deals like this. The Ollie Henry and Smith trades show he knows the value of a player and sticks to it.

I am happy to get Marshall at the right price which has regard to the factors you mention. Mackie will play the game well.

Our first round pick is likely to be in the 20s anyway, so maybe a pick in the 40s or 50s back?

Id easily have Marshall in the top 10 ruck.. id say he be in the top 7 ish

So people's thoughts on Conway. Should of we only given him a 1 year contract instead of 2? And had a clause in that 1 year contract

I understand it was members of the medical team who requested the two year deal... 😉

I get this but there is not a lot on the market this year (some of the bigger name players are not realistic for us due to lack of draft picks to trade) and because we dont know how long tanners court case will go on for we need to bring in a ready to go midfielder now (same with the ruck issue). We can't wait and worpel is the best thats gettable on the market. It's the right call and I'm pretty confident he will work as a decent role player in our team.

PO: if the club sees it that way (same as with your analysis) in regards to Worpel 'come trade time'..... then fair enough and it's up to us supporters to back them in as they deserve that right. 👌

Lol 😂
Im going to put my hand up .and I wasn't keen that he got a 2 year contract. I always wanted a 1 year with a clause.
Look I hope I'm wrong , but if he keeps braking down the way he does, it doesn't even look good. And tbh we still don't have any update on his injury and its been a month... bit disappointed that nothing has been said

The 2 year contract would have given assurance to both parties - Conway that there's time on his side should things start working out but also us that if he clicked next year he wouldn't be an easy trade target

With the latest injury set back, if it is serious enough where he's no chance of taking to the field again, both parties would likely have a good case to file for an early termination based on medical grounds, where we can pay him out of the last year of his contract without the full hit to our salary cap

I can understand your concerns.. however getting a pick back in the 20’s. Our R1 will probably be in the 20’s. Not perfect but it would give us some breathing space due to the lack of luck with Conway. Bottom line for me is we have a side that with another 20 games into our young players should be in contention in 2026. But our options for ruck are so thin they are anorexic

If we can work our a way to get done fro less than R1. Great. but considering the draft this year is considering average and our pick is probably post 20 … I could see the club just paying to cover the role

I hope I'm wrong, and Conway gets his body right ✅️.. but its looking very doubtful

He’s a big guy with navicular fractures. Highly likely he’s done. Lucky to get a 2 year contract

I wonder if the powers at Carlton thought the same about Jack Martin.

Exactly. A pick in the 20s in a poor draft might get us a player ready for senior football in a couple of years, or could be a bust, compared to a pick in the 20s getting Marshall who will walk into the team and fill a weakness when we are in the premiership window. Players are going well beyond 30 these days so we should get 3 good years out of him, and possibly more.
It seems to make complete business sense.

What do you mean exactly by premiership "window"? September? 😉
