Training Giants Pre-Season for season 2018

Whitfield looked really really good last night off half back. He actually showed a turn of speed when chasing down players that we don't normally get to see when he's out on a wing or got the ball in hand. Plus his tackling was really sticking.

Loved Tiziani's pressure up forward too, though it either eased off or he played less in the second half. Langdon didn't do much. I feel like Shipley might have the inside running on the small forward role at the moment.

Similar thoughts to dlanod. None of the new kids really put their hand up for the small/medium forward role. Langdon did some good things and got himself in the right spots, but couldn't convert and his couple of poor shots on goal turned me off him as a small forward prospect just at the moment (that is, he needs more development but green shoots). Shipley did some good things, but also made some errors (don't know how he gets marked as zero clangers when he certainly made a couple of errors), so again just needs some more time to develop. Although I'd acknowledge that he never really played in a purely forward role, rather, it was more of a wide-ranging role from the wing that I saw. I thought Reid looked a bit off the pace, while Lloyd probably made the best of his audition - not just the 3 goals, but overall how he played. Tiziani I agree was a bit of a surprise packet, playing pretty much purely as a medium forward. I'm unsure of how close he would be to getting a first-grade chance from pre-season training, but he did well in terms of marking, tackling and general positional play last night. 59% TOG, so I think he had less time in the second half. Hopefully next week we see Bonar play - it would be good to see Bonar, Langdon, Shipley & Tiziani all have time playing a forward role in competition with each other for the 1 or 2 spots that I perceive are open at the moment.

Shipley won’t play small forward in my opinion.

I'll take a contrary opinion. While I don't think he necessarily will be given a small/medium forward role, I certainly think it possible that we would select him in that role. He was recruited with plenty of speed, and hardness at the ball, as well as tackling ability, and reasonable hands for marking ability. At 190 cms, he can be the replacement in lieu of a third tall, who has better speed and ability to avoid or close down the opposition defenders in our F50. If he can run through the midfield at times too, then he's a great option.

I could envisage in future a forward line such as Patton (deep power forward), Cameron CHF, Shipley & Bonar (fast hard tacklers who can also goal kick), Greene & Daniels/Langdon plus a resting mid would be a formidable combination.

I’d have Lloyd ahead of Shipley or Bonar or Daniels or Langdon.

Absolutely at the moment. That lineup was intended to be a few years in the future - and then only theoretical.

From what I've seen so far this season, I'd think that Leon would still favour HH as a third tall; then I'd see Greene, Taranto, MdB & Lloyd to be the form medium/smalls (ignoring Deledio as being still injured). For one of the new kids to grab a spot, they would really have to turn it on in JLT2 and/or Toby also to miss round 1.

If you look to the possible forward line up i would have as definite in all peoples 22's as

Greene Cameron TT
?????? Patton MDB
Bench spot

Maybe 50% would have HH as one of those spots and then to be decided by pre season form any of
Lloyd Bonar Tiziani maybe competing with HH for a spot as they are all medium sized
Then Langdon, Daniels and maybe Deledio/Kennedy or a mid could be named on the bench
I think we will have a better idea after the team is named for next friday night what they are thinking

I like Lloyd and he's way too good for NEAFL but sometimes you get these players that just can't deliver at AFL/ He looked good against the Pies but he really needs to show season proper because his 7 games last year felt something like a tease.

2015 Rookie draft from the newcastle league
2016 in the NEAFL and also a pre season
2017 AFL debut and 7 games
I am confident with a third AFL preseason he will be able to play a role and just turning 26 he should be in his prime

Haynes Davis Shaw
Whitfield Tomlinson Corr
Shiel Kelly Scully
Greene Cameron DeBoer
Taranto Patton Langdon
Lobb Ward Cogs

Hopper HH Deledio Griffen

This is the team I think we’ll go with.

We’ve tried inside mids as small forwards... hopper and Kennedy.... it doesn’t work. We need more specialised players there. Taranto can get away with it because he has a great tank, decent speed, good agility and takes marks... all round gun.
Our forward line should be:
Greene Cameron DeBoer
Taranto Patton Langdon

...but Greene...he was an inside who we threw up forward. That worked out ok.

How the kid whose disposal efficiency by foot was abysmal turned into an AA small forward and joint leading goal scorer is nothing short of miraculous.
because kicking a ball between two stationary sticks 6.4 metres apart and 6m high is a bit easier than hitting a human who is probably moving.

don't want him to butcher it? get him to not kick it at other people.

Coniglio from a supercoach perspective? Will have have tagging roles or pure ball getter? obviously value if have Ave 110. thoughts?

Would like to see him have one year as a pure ball winner, surly some young punk can take the tagging duties?
Well, the thing about Cogs is that he rarely does a hard tag to the exclusion of winning ball - he tags by concentrating on his man and winning his ball (80/20%, 70/30%), rather than tackling him after he gets the ball, and never by scragging the guy (as Sloane was scragged last year). Our other young punks? Ward, Kelly, Shiel, Hopper, would have been Setterfield. Sam Reid tagged Zorko in one game last year - we could see that again depending on circumstances. Nick Shipley maybe at some point. I see the point you're making, but it's not really a black-and-white situation.

Yeah good analysis there! Thanks mate.

Just checking if anyone has seen anything about an intraclub on this weekend as I thought it was mentioned in an article a few weeks ago?

If he stays healthy he is a keeper M5/M6 for sure, 110 is well within his range whilst also being accountable for a man.
