Free Agency Grant Birchall [Signs with Brisbane, no compensation]

Has apparently been given the green light to look elsewhere if he wants to extend his career.

Hawthorn may still be able to retain him, but it depends on how their list shapes up during the trade period.

As an unrestricted free agent has always had a green light to look elsewhere whether we like it or not. Not sure how the media fail to report simple accurate facts.

It sounds like the Hawks may have actively said to Birchall 'we're not sure if we'll offer you a contract for 2020 until after the trade period, feel free to look around to see what you can get for yourself' or something similar.

Most Lions appear against it but I'd take him, one year and if fit is still a great player, isn't he only 31
That is the problem unfortunately. 3 years where he has barely played. If we were confident he could stay fit we would signed him awhile ago

That’s not really the whole story.

We are looking to make our list younger and we won’t stand in his way of getting a better contract as he’s on the wrong side of 30.

His knee injury was the main issue over the last 18 months and he’s got that behind him.

He had a soft issue late in the year due mostly to his lack of a fitness base.

He’ll be capable of a full preseason and if that eventuates just watch him turn back the clock.

Lions supporters who don’t want this bloke rolling off the back flank, you’ve got rocks in your head.

4 time premiership player and a rolled gold elite ball user.

Reckon he'll take the Hawthorn deal. Too busted up of late to get an offer of real value above the Hawthorn deal i'd imagine so will stay put.

Interesting we are a club he is linked with. If the Hawks are offering him a deal, can see him taking it up.

Depends if he gets a better long-term deal for more $$$.....Even then, he may chose to stay....We gave Roughead & Burgoyne the same choice.

Is he another Hawthorn product with coaching chops/aspirations.

Because that's the thing with Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis. All were looking at post-career roles and had probably? done/were angling for a lvl 1 or 2 coaching academy spot.

Honestly, if he was in the same position I'd be happy to have him at WC. Could be wrong, but we have a junior line coach role to fill and he'd be great working with Hurn to guide the young blokes like Rotham, Cole, O'Neill etc.
