Great coaching moments

Even better was his victory speech where he said 'Allan Scott, you were wrong'
Allan had called for Choco's head the previous season declaring Port would never win a Premiership under Williams.

Takes guts to call a major sponsor out in that fashion but he was right.
Haha yeah i remember. I was at that game, good on him again.

* the haters!

Stuart Dew moved to the forward line late in the 3rd qtr of the 2008 Grand Final.

Alastair Clarkson overruled Hawthorn's recruiting manager during the 2007 draft and insisted they choose Stuart Dew with their 3rd round selection (pick no.45). Dew had retired after the 2006 season and followed his girlfriend (an aspiring actress) to Los Angeles where he stopped worrying about his fitness, ate pizza, drank beer and lived the good life.

After receiving the call from Clarko, he arrived back in Australia weighing about 120kg.

Geez... didn't the Hawks cop of ton of s**t for wasting a draft pick on "fat boy"! Dew trimmed down somewhat over the next 6 months, but he never got his weight below 100kg. He had a reasonably serviceable season where he managed to play 15 games without ever setting the world on fire.

On Grand Final day, he started on the bench, but was soon in the action, playing across the centre and out wide in a wing/half back role. He had a decent 1st half. But late in the 3rd quarter, he was moved further forward and had a 5 minute spell where he went apeshit and broke the game apart.

His match-winning 5 minute "cameo" in the 3rd quarter kind of overshadows the fact he had a great game and received some Norm Smith Medal votes. The Hawk coaches rated him as our second best player after Hodgey.

Hawk B&F votes: Grand Final

Luke Hodge 15
Stuart Dew 12
Brad Sewell 11
Michael Osborne 11
Cyril Rioli 10
Xavier Ellis 10
Campbell Brown 9
Mark Williams 9
Grant Birchall 9
Shane Crawford 8
et cetera....

How the recruitment game has changed in 10 years.

I can't imagine any player with that body shape playing at the top level ever again.

It was a combination of the Hawks being a young side, very light-on for finals experience and needing some more leadership. But also Clarkson had been an assistant coach at Port Adelaide during their premiership season in 2004 and had a good rapport with Stuey Dew, knew he'd be a good clubman and so it was worth taking a punt on his rocket left leg.

Clarkson overhauling Hawthorn's attacking structure to be less Buddy-conscious in 2013 is up there. Sure, most teams try for an even spread of goalkickers, but it was remarkable how effective that particular switch was.

Terry Wallace v Bombers 2000 - the FLOOD!

Was also responsible for the "Basketball crap" that beat the Crows when no one was getting within 40 points of them.

Jack Watts to the ruck :$:$

Pfft, that's straight out of the Robert Walls coaching handbook.

Mark Williams doing a choking impression clutching his tie after Port won in 2004. I hated port, wasn't going for them, but good on him. He had every right to do what he did. Gave campaigners the biggest **** you he could and stuck it up them in an almighty royal manner.

I love how much this has become grand final folklore. Knew it at the time but took a little while to really gain traction for how significant it was. Can't ever recall a more telling 5 minutes from an individual in a grand final. Maybe Darren Jarman in the 97 decider comes close.

Oh... pretty hard to top Darren Jarman's 4th quarter blitz in '97.
He had the ball on a string. Six goals, 5 in the last, Crows first ever flag.

Akermanis did something similar in the 1st half of the 2003 GF vs Collingwood except the game was a blowout and Simin Black racked up 38 touches and grabbed all the glory.

Paul Dear had an amazing purple patch in the 2nd qtr of the '91 GF vs WCE

One for the oldies. 1977 grand final, North kicking poorly and Peter Moore tearing North a new one up forward.

Crosswell from CHF to Full Back in the third quarter. The catalyst of our come back win.

Mark Neeld putting Col Garland forward in our 2012 win over Essendon. The horrors they had as he kicked three in the last quarter lol. That loss broke them for the season
