Last flight I went on via NZ, we were delayed by about six hours due to fog in Auckland. When we finally boarded, we sat in our allocated seats. There were three NZ guys who'd been assigned seats across the aisle from us, but they were big guys. Very big. It was clear that they weren't going to fit into three seats, so there was a mad scramble to re-seat them into seats where they would fit.So on my first flight today, NZ120, we had a drunk that was arrested on arrival at Auckland.
Was the entertainment early on, but after 4 hours of turbulence and limited service, I wished he was tasered and given to the resident gimp.
Anyway, as we were approaching Auckland, we were told that our connecting flight to Samoa was being held on the runway, but all of the passangers destined for Samoa (us and about six others) were offered the choice of staying overnight in Auckland or if we insisted, they'd hold the Samoa flight until we landed and transferred. It had to be a unanimous decision.
Because we weren't given any onfo on the next flight etc. the vote was to hold the plane and we'd all go on to Samoa.
We landed and were put onto a golf cart, then rushed to the other plane which had been sitting on the tarmac for around three hours. We were greeted by the captain who announced over the plane's PA that we were the people that had caused their flight to be delayed and he asked the other passangers to welcome us aboard. The term "campaigner" was clearly part of the welcoming cheer that rung out up and down the cabin.
Air New Zealand kindly didn't inform us that our luggage wasn't going to be put onto our connecting flight, but at the airport in Apia when we arrived at about 3AM we were told it would come in on the next flight - we all swear they told us it would be in at around 11AM. But it didn't arrive. Of course.
Air New Zealand then told all of us that our luggage was lost and on day 5 they gave us $75 per person as compensation, with advice that a further $425 would be claimable in a few weeks through some kind of re-imbursement - or just use our insuance, We got written confirmation of the luggage being lost.
But, the concierge at Aggie Grey's was an ex-Air Paradise employee and he made some calls to LA where it turned out our baggage had been offloaded and was placed into the unclaimed luggage area. Air Paradise collected the luggage, returned it to Apia at their expense, cleared it through customs and even paid for the taxi that I used to pick up our bags from the airport.
That's my best grumpy story with a happy ending for today.
