We didn't make the right or wrong choice yet.

Was Grundy meant to be someone we should have drafted to be our 1st ruck this year and deliver us a premiership is he?

Thread only exists because of an injury to Simpson. Before he went down you could arguably ask whether drafting Grundy would have been a mistake because he'd be fighting for the 2nd ruck position with West, Blitz & Vardy and be lucky to get a game.

Thurlow will play 200 games for us. He WILL be very good in defense at the very least. Seriously, this is a kid who didn't look out of place in a top of the table clash earlier this year and has proven in the 2's that he can either play defense, wing or forward. I said last year that Guthrie was a big part of our future and I'll say this year that Thurlow is even bigger. Will be a star.

Pies have done well to get him and watching that game I was impressed at his efforts for 5 games.

Thurlow has had what 5 games too.

i seem to remember a fair bit of froth going on when he started against the Bombers.

Both will be good - I feel very good - but to be calling mistakes at game 5 might be a little ahead of the curve.

The list of mistakes we have made after game 5
Enright
Scarlett
Chpaman
Ling
Mooney...

you get the idea

Go Catters

I reckon Thurlow is one of our best picks in years. Going to be a real star.

Grundy looks a good player but we can't have them all.

If Thurlow was struggling I could see the argument but he has had the best debut year by an 18yo Geelong draftee since Selwood.

There is a risk with the division two players, many are flops, but like everything in the speculation business it is a risk/reward trade off.

I'd say Beams never would have fallen to mid 20s if he was division 1. I think we'll be saying the same thing with Thurlow by about round 8 next year...

It might be like asking would you prefer Dean Cox or Corey Enright over the past 15 years.

Either way your going to be pretty happy with what you have.

With his numbers in the VFL Thurlow could be playing seniors now, it's just plays like Varcoe are getting seniority, last week Thurlow had 29 disposals and 3 goals, so could've come in, and he's been a reserve since back from injury.
Next year he'll step up!

Pies have the next best recruitment to us, I think. Swans would be up there but they're great at trades also.
Totally agree, I have alot of admiration of Wells and how well he recruits for you guys. We got Grundy but you guys still got a jet in Thurlow and rumor had it Wells was tossing up between Thurlow and Broomhead who we took with our last pick and so far your winning that round.

Clearly made the wrong choice as an A grade ruck is more valuable than an A grade HBF.

Thurlow looks like a very good prospect so it's not a big error.

I suspect our recruiters wanted to see if Simpson and Vardy would get over their injuries before recruiting another long-term option.

I'm very happy with Thurlow, he's going to be a fantastic player for us.

Had he not broken his cheekbone a month or so ago I reckon he'd have been back in the side a couple of weeks ago

Vardy, Simpson, West, Blisavs.... there you go. What might we need in a couple of years with Enright, Hunt and even Mackie leaving is small attacking defenders with class.

I dont know anything about AFL recruitment anywoo just a thought besides having quiet a few rucks on the list.Grundy does'nt have that much AFL football experience (more basketball) maybe SWells thought he would take a while to become ready to take #1 ruck.Anyway I am happy with thurlow he is what the club needs classy forward/back flanker they dont grow on trees either.

If Dawson Simpson wasn't injured this question wouldn't even be relevant. Cant help bad luck. Very happy with Thurlow.
