News Harley Bennell - Ends at Freo in 2019

I'm not trying to give him a Victoria Cross guys... I just wanted to say something nice about his efforts sticking with it, without it resorting to a "but he's just in it for the money" generalisation... The media have excelled in completely assassinating his character. You guys are Freo supporters and yet seem to want to fight to the death to stop someone from supporting him. Good work media, Bravo!

Not true, I have been a massive supporter of his, I just found your suggestion that he has other options more attractive to him fanciful

It's only 200k. I know a heck of a lot of people who get paid a fair bit more than that that don't have to keep their bodies in pristine shape, don't have to watch everything they eat, don't have to deal with media scrutiny, don't have to push their bodies to the limit, and get to do the off season stuff we see a lot more regularly than footballers do. And of course it's unlikely Harley is going to find himself in a job like that outside of football but I don't think we should pretend it is an easy life for the money they make.

You lost me at only $200k.

I don't know why you'd get him training, lower the workload, and give him some game time. It's evident his body is prone to this and it isn't getting better. Nurse him softly and don't piss about with Peel, just get him in the team.

His big traits aren't fitness or accumulating heaps of possessions or even being a midfielder. He's a guy with spiky skill and the tenacity to kick four goals with five touches. You don't need him being super fit, you just need him being confident and using his raw ability.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Get him round one ready whatever they have to do.

Don't necessarily disagree with you, but hopefully Rory Laird or Zac Tuohy don't play on him and have 40+ possessions, a goal & 5 goal assists because he can't chase them as it won't help the team much.

Put a fork in him

Injured while in the rehab group!?

Did we not access his first injury well enough and push him too hard? Or just dumb luck

Either way, I wonder how he responds - anyone want to set the odds for retirement?

Hate to say it but Crumpet features was right, he said about 18 months ago that Harley won't play again for the Dockers.
Time to move on unfortunately, we've tried everyting and he's tried very hard, but you've just got to cut your losses sometimes

Omg this so painful watching this guys calves breakdown every year. Please put him and us out of misery and retire so we can draft someone else. Doing the same s**t and excepting a different result. Thanks for your commitment harl but your a bust and it’s not your fault.

Definitely time to move on now. The bloke strains his calf walking laps now. The west article said he sat on the ground were he felt the strain for an eternity so my guess he knows he is done. Sad but time to move on.

Maybe we can draft in South Australian midfielder Tom Lewis who was on our radar and best mates with Mitch Crowden.

I can picture Bell’s feather falling off his cap now as he gives the cold stare to Rosco Lyon.

Also I expect more interviews with Colin Young or Rosco saying it’s just a minor 2-week strain.
It possibly is. Except he will do it again in 2 weeks time.

I want him to tag with Barlow (and take Ballas while the door's open) which gives us a 31yo experienced (with Freo too) inside mid who can collect 25+ possessions a game and send it forward into the hands of a tall forward. He was getting "ridiculous" possies in the state league last year (https://thewest.com.au/sport/gold-coast-suns/michael-barlow-averaging-ridiculous-numbers-in-the-neafl-ng-b88858407z) when GC dropped him for kids, and in his interview, said he was unhappy because he thought he had more to give at that level. Would take some of the punishment off Brayshaw and Cerra and good mentor around the club.

The NEAFL has some promising talents in it, but the league is nowhere near VFL, WAFL, SAFL.

Now, that is speaking to the point of the NEAFL itself, not Barlow ;)

On the bright side with Sandi and Bennell battling calves we might use a couple of picks in the mid season draft to get our hands on some mature VFL, SANFL or WAFL players before the draft

Most clubs will be doing this I reckon. One decent player is about all we can realistically expect imo unless we’re in the bottom two or three.

It’s disguised well enough but it’s like a hidden priority pick imo. I heard Gillon saying last year he wants to explore ways of clubs rebuilding quicker - this is a way he’s brought in to try and help. This whole thing only exists to get the next Tim Kelly or Bailey Fritsch to the bottom few clubs rather than them slipping to the second round onwards in the National Draft when anyone could take them.

No ones drafting a specialist depth player unless in premiership contention AND they really need that sort of player. All you need is one or two of these types to drafted though and it’s a success both as advertised and how the AFL truly what it used.
