To me I don't think we lost a lot by him replacing Cox. Very good get for us, and in development terms with us approaching a finals window, an important piece.
Interesting, I came away from it thinking, "jeez, we missed Cox"

Reckon we were a bit lucky that we were playing the Eagles

Thought McDonald looked shaky but should be decent enough to pinch hit in a couple of games

He’s going to have a great year at peel and should lead the goal kicking, will be great depth if we get any injuries, already ahead of Tabs.
I think Treacy will be looking over his shoulder. I liked what I saw and if he can hold his marks and be a one touch player, I think he's in.

Positives
1. Fyfe may not get back to his Brownlow years but he will way better than last year.
2. Treacy, Amiss and Jackson all provided arial pressure, kept spacing and timed leads.
3. Amiss is a very smart cookie, the block to allow Treacy an uncontested mark is gold and his understanding to lead away.
4. JL understanding we don't have two or three solid wings, so he made the adjustment to not play traditional two wings.
5. Our Midfield depth is strong. Somebody is going to miss out.
6. We can rely on our non-best 22 to fill the gaps when needed. McDonald is the new Silvagni, Hughes, and Voss are all solid foot soldiers.
7. Draper looked Michael Johnson like.
8. Cooper Simpson is a find and will play games this year.
9. Our second team was way better than West Coasts.
10. West Coast are bad and their delightful delusional fans think they are not.

Negatives.
1. Taberner wasn't good.
2. The Lack one creative forward.
3. Not a lot of new tricks from JL.

Not sure if anyone replied, I love your scale, Id say hold the bus, we're not there yet but there are signs.
I’m actually just watching it now, up to 3qrt time.

Not really impressed overall, feel like we get lost handballing thru the middle too much. Also the chipping around the backline with a slow switch still there. A lot of stationary players doing not much when we have the ball on halfback also.

I can’t say I saw any real difference in terms of our ball movement to last year.

There were individual positives for a number of players, but I hope we can show more next week in terms of how the team moves the ball.

They all played ok but if you rated them it would be JOM, Raz then Brodie for mine. JOM just reminded us that he is a class above the other two especially when delivering the ball to the forwards (the forwards will want him in the 22) great body use and clean skills. JOM was also a reasonable option on the wing for the game.
I was surprised how good JOM was on the wing. Not sure he has the fitness to play more than stints on the Wing but I don’t mind him there at all. MJ and Brayshaw also spent periods on the Wing. Rotate those three with a specialist on the other. Sharp and NOD battling it out for the specialist Wing role. From what I’ve seen I have Sharp marginally ahead.

Ras in the mix for a bench spot and I agree ahead of Brodie. I thought Ras played well in the 3rd and 4th quarters and used the ball well.

As someone else mentioned. He still looks too lean. He’d barely have a skin fold reading. His body is bigger but he is playing the long game with weight gain. Likely he is eating like a horse but calorie deficit not to lose that lean body. Ras will play a fair bit this year and rotate forward at times.

Brodie looks more like a back-up at this point. A couple of injuries and he would get an opportunity to cement his spot, but outside beat 23 for mine.

Sounds a whole lot like Kara Antonio in her last couple of seasons. A cool head that makes the right decisions moving the ball forward.

Not sure if anyone else has raised this - but I thought Aish was excellent in the back half.
Such a smart footballer, while he can play all over the ground his decision making fills the void of young’s boot.
Second only to Clark yesterday in the back half for mine

Fair comments. And we were playing the wooden spooners who are widely tipped to remain firmly in that position.
But our dominant mids were connecting better with our forwards, that was definitely there.
Aish and Clark did very well clearing out from our backline.
We don't want to get ahead of ourselves based on that pre-preseason game. But in terms of what we are hoping for in 2024 I think there was evidence of green shoots everywhere.
Brizzy at home will be the real test. Shame that they will already have played a game with live ammunition.

Not sure whether this is a positive or negative tbh but West Coast we’re so bad I wasn’t sure what to think of the overall performance. IMO it looked like we were somewhat going through the motions but West Coast still put in some effort defensively particularly in the forward half - their midfield and defence were beyond sh** though.

Your wing comment is interesting imo. It’s certainly how we played yesterday but that was without Sharp available. I thought NOD did enough to at least keep his spot in the 26-28 we select next week even if we select Sharp tbh. Longer term I think we play the extra winger and move Erasmus into the mids but atm they’re trying to find a way to fit Fyfe and JOM in the side which is probably the best overall mix.

Is it just me or did clark's disposal let him down? I noticed a couple of his kicks hung in the air and allowed the oppo to either spoil or intercept. Thats what frustrates me!
he just had typical pre-season issues (like all of them) but showed how talented he is

Its amazing how many toast supporters i know that just expect them to beat Freo at any oppurtunity .They seem to have no understanding of where their at and how they got there. And they think its god given that West coast will always be better than Freo.So many fair weather supporters that wont stomach a proper rebuild

But with enough heart...

I'm not meaning to suggest he will push Cox for a spot in the best 22. But I am confident he will allow our structure to remain intact if he is needed. I'm not sure that would happen with our other options.

Am I reading this right.. people are suggesting that Brennan Cox is not in our best 23!!!
Our best intercept marker, the type of player every team needs, other than us that is.
Am I right? please tell me I am not right.

A couple of things I took away from the game yesterday:

Clark has got his mojo back and is in for a good year if he can maintain that effort.

Johnson is going to be a weapon this year the kid just knows how to play and find space.

NOD showed signs he is getting back to his old self. He ran hard to link forward and back and gave great effort.

A fit Fyfe is going to be a bonus this year, he seemed to play a bit smarter yesterday albeit against inferior opponents and being a scratchy but if he can protect his body he will really add to our mix.

Cooper has smarts and knows where to run to, it seems to come natural to him. For some reason he reminds me of a younger smaller Patrick Cripps without the ego and shitheadness!

You would love to play with Treacy in your side. Never takes a backward step and while his marking needs to improve you could never question his effort.

Jye is a gun.

Voss is a great pickup as depth. He was playing against witches hats but he can football.

Same goes for McDonald who seemed to get better as the game went on.

Darcy looked to be struggling with fitness so hopefully next week's game and an extra few weeks training gets him ready for round 1.2.

We finally seem to have genuine depth which will place pressure on places each week and cover for injuries.

Next week will give a better guide to where we are really at but the signs are promising.

Pretty sure you are not.

I can't see a post where someone is suggesting Cox is no longer Best 22.

Fully expecting to hear ‘I don’t really follow footy that much these days’ again from just about everyone at work that painted their faces yellow and blue in 2018.
