Hawk Memories

I agree that all the games mentioned bring back great memories. One that I recall was the first final I saw us play. It was 1974 and North's first final since 1958. We won comfortably with Kekovich kicking 5 (I think) and one of those being a "Keka classic" breaking open a pack and torping it through the middle on the run from 50,even the Hawks fans in front of me were in awe and applauded spontaneously.

Thanks Darky for the correction.

The Elimination Final from that year would HAVE to have been the Krakouers finest hour at North wouldn't it?

Did the Krakouer's actually get a kick in finals????????

Had you said Johnny Holt's finest hour I would have definitely agreed.

And was it not Phil that barrelled that goal to tie things up in 85 - what a game that was.

Cheers

What about some of the epic losses.

Like the day we barrelled them in the first quarter in about 87 I think, were seven goals up and got pumped by ten goals, and then that night game when Super Apple McCarthy proved his inadequacy by missing some sitters late when a finals berth was on th line and Dermie ran into an open goal late.

The other one that stays clear in the mind was the King almost singlehandedly plucking the game in 1993 when he took two of his trademark, run with the flight of the ball grabs, the second the cracker because he didn't use his chest - the man simply pirohuetted (forgive the spelling) over Langford.

The other one was that awful loss in the middle of 1998 that sparked us into action - two points at Waverley when they were depleted - and we lost about six of our next 38 after that.

They were a nemesis, but there were some classic losses.

One of my favourites was '93... we didn't win but we gave the Hawks a hell of a shake for the first time in years.

Carey turned it on and gave Langford a bath (and Langford was about the best backman going around at the time) Micky was injured, so we played the Horse on Dunstall, who was also in fine form. A great game to watch, but our boys couldn't quite hold on in the final minutes.

Darky, I thought Carey played on Andrew Gowers in the '94 thrashing... check out the video when you get it and let me know! (what kind of life do I have storing details like that?!?)

I'm sure Holland played in one of the key defense posts and had a heap kicked on him. Longmire maybe?

This was 7 years ago... I have trouble remembering what I had for lunch today!

It was probably a liquid lunch. :D

Which is better than a powder lunch. Boy oh boy, I have just learnt what goes on at some of these rave clubs. Are there any ravers on this board?

Um, 35Eye......listen, we're going to have to sit down and have a little talk about the seedier side of life.........

:) <-----gawd, I licked one of these on the weekend.....what a bad trip that was.....ended up walking around a club looking like this ----->

Shinners, for shame (not Shane) re 85 draw, twas the talented Krakouer (Phil) not Jimmy who equaled for your boys. Was also the first match the (bow down and gaze upon the raincoat with reverance) the first time KENNEDY coached against us.

Aside from that, many great games, but trust me, you dont want to bring the wine and cheese around for my video higlights!!

ps, any ideas on a meeting for this week? Theres maybe a few of us heading to the cricketers about noon.

Cheers.

pps, yea they were both (Phil and Jimmy) talents, just i always saw Phil do more against the Hawks, so i rate him ahead of Jim.

Me again! (<- troll)

This game you're mentioning in 1993, was it at Waverley?

I missed a game out there against the 'Roos in either '92 or '93 (the last one I missed before Port Adelaide three weeks ago), and we went eight or nine goals up by quarter time with the boy Jarman going nuts. Then some kid I'd never heard of called Carey started doing the same, and the 'Roos got back to within about two goals during the third quarter.

It took two classics from the Fuddster to put you away - the first when some goof like Darren (Barry) Crocker was loitering over the ball, and Jars went in, picked the ball up with one hand in the wet, did a blind turn around two 'Roos while he was picking up the ball and slotted it from forty. He kicked one around his body off one step from 50 metres five minutes later and the Hawks were home.

I remember that game for two reasons: those goals, and thinking "that 18 kid might make a player".

Grendel

I stand corrected on Phil/Jim and that goal.

The pre-match meet up, not sure I can make it at 12 for the Cricketers, but maybe 1-ish. I'll send you a private message with my mobile number.

John Kennedy.....I often see him around Camberwell, but I have never had the nerve to go up and thank him for what he's done for North Melbourne.

Quite simply, the glamour boy reportedly said to Peter Bell, "If I knew what you were, I'd call you a name."

I have this game on tape. If I am right it was our last game at Waverley. Wayne came back after an injury and it was the same night that Pickett KO'd Krummel (have I got that name right). The King I think kicked 8 goals and he was under a bit of pressure as Stevo had been captain while he was injured and we had not dropped one. Stevo, Belly and I think Shannon gave Crawford heaps all night, really put him off. The next week Essendon played them and James Hird said that they had watched what the Roos had done to Crawford and so they did the same thing to him, basically just mouthed off at him all night. Of course Crawford went on to win the Brownlow the same year.
It was freezing at that game, it also rained and the Roo supporters got into the Waverley members stand. At the end of the game they interviewed the king and the rest of the boys gave him heaps as he was running back to them. It is a really funny tape to watch, especially the stuff with Crawford he was so P.O. This is one of the videos I get out when I want to have a football fix.

My most recent Hawk memory (a horrific one at that) was Dermott's coat at last Sunday's Box Hill game.......someone call the fashion police now dammit!!!

Did anyone else have the pleasure of seeing the silk army print coat with fluffy white hood as well and correct me if I'm wrong, was he wearing a skivvy/turtle-neck underneath?????

Dermott, Dermott, Dermott.

But seeing Ben Dixon in the crowd made up for that!!!! :D

1984 - North Melbourne vs Hawthorn at the MCG. Jim Krakouer dances down the half foward flank in the dying seconds and nails a goal that secures a draw for us.

1994 - Round 3 at the MCG where we finally brought an end to a 10 year long losing streak against Hawthorn by a comfy 21 goals. When I got home, I rang my best friend who was in England at the time and just yelled, "WE'VE FINALLY BEATEN THE F*CKING BASTARDS!!!!!!!" down the phone.

Sorry Shinners but that draw was in 1985. :p

Hey there Roo Buddies,

This week it's the Hawks.
* Fellow strugglers of the Early years;
* Fierce Rivals in the 70's (just a bit young to remember the pain & glory agst them);
* Unbeatable for us through the 80's - early 90's;
* Easybeats for us though the mid-late 90's

Keen to read your memories (good & bad) on playing agst the Mob from Glenferrie.

Apart from the many clinics the King has put on for them, 2 games are etched in the memory - both of them finals:
* 1994 - famous for the 1st extra time finals game. A classic contest, which still send shivers down my spine.
* 2000 - what can I say? Do I need to say anything? Awesome!!!!

Thoughts...

Balders

Fellow strugglers is right.
Reading the Footy Record whilst walking to Arden St. from North Station back in the 50s. Quote ( North supplied the Footballs in one Game as The Hawks couldn't afford them).
Lots of moves back then to try and send the Hawks back to the V.F.A.
Things haven't changed much, with a lot of Posters from other Clubs stating that they would like to see North get Booted out of the Comp.

Just curious...

The similar history is noticeable between the two clubs. In the early days, when both clubs realy struggled, was there any special kind of rivalry between North Melbourne and Hawthorn?

Would such a rivalry have been a fairly good-spirited and friendly rivalry because of the empathy factor, both clubs having started out with long lean spells?

In the early days the rivalry was to stay off the bottom of the Ladder.
That rivalry extended to Footscray as well seeing that we entered the V.F.L. at the same time.
The rivalry between we three newbies and the rest of the Comp. continues today. Even though more newbies have entered the Comp, it's as if they don't exist in the rivalry between us and the
older sides.
I've got Royal Blue and White Blood and a soft spot for the Hawks and the Doggies, untill they beat us. :) :)
