f*** i jinked him.

apparently is ill. Ignoring the threat of it being the virus (which is extrmely low) being sick is not a great thing to be 4 days out from a grand final. also uncertainty about how queensland will approach quarantine for a sick person with covid symptoms even if he clearly doesnt have covid. Lets hope this illness doesnt drag to later in the week. Queensland government is going to want to make a statement two weeks out from an election.

That is really unfortunate. Fingers crossed for Tommy that it passes quickly so that he can dominate on the weekend.

I think the Queensland government will only make a statement if he tests positive. So the next 24-48 hours will be telling. I highly doubt it's covid though. If he tests negative then he should be right to play on Saturday. It's amazing how quickly a little bug can spread through a family. It's like wildfire!

They are using quarantine as in his isolating away from his teammates - pretty standard practice for a player who is under the weather as they don't want anything spreading amongst the group - basically he'll be in his hotel room, resting up and watching tv

Geelong are adamant Tom Hawkins will be fit to play in the AFL grand final against Richmond despite the Coleman medallist missing Tuesday’s training session through illness.

A club spokesperson said Hawkins had been told to stay away from teammates after feeling unwell.

The power forward has a sore throat, an ailment believed to have been passed on by one of his children.

Hawkins’ young family is staying with him at Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, where a small group of Geelong players with families are based.

The majority of the Cats’ travelling party is based a few kilometres away at the hotel adjacent to their Southport Sharks training ground.

After attending Geelong’s Brownlow function with wife Emma on Sunday night, Hawkins was pulled out of a pre-arranged press conference on Monday with what the club said was a family commitment.

He was replaced by fellow veteran Harry Taylor and rescheduled to speak to the media on Thursday.

That is now in some doubt but the Cats say there is no chance Hawkins will miss the decider, with the 32-year-old’s training absence on Tuesday viewed purely as a precaution.

Geelong players trained in small groups on Tuesday in what is termed a “craft session”.

Their main training session for the week is on Wednesday night in the lead-up to Saturday night’s grand final at the Gabba.

He'll line up on Saturday night, and think about it - if he starts coughing then his opponent may have to practice safe social distancing, leaving Hawkins alone in the goal square...

A sore stomach wouldnt have him in quarantine.
Absolutely it would. Gastro could knock the whole team over. It’s highly infectious.

If he is still coughing come thursday/ friday its going to be big news in queensland. Queensland will come down hard on him playing regardless of any test proving its not covid as there is a 4 day window between being infectious and testing positive. Queensland is about to have an election on this very issue. Im worried. Geelong and even the afl can downplay this as much as they want. If this story reaches the local papers and news bulletins his grand final availability is in trouble.

Too late for that - story is already all over social media

And it's already happened at least once this season - when we played Essendon, it was reported after the fact that 2/3 Essendon players were feeling under the weather on the bus to the GABBA

That game still went ahead

That game wasnt a grand final. It also wasnt one week from an election. it was also reported the bombers were sick on the day of the game. Not 5 days out enabling the story to gain traction.

this isnt about logic. Its about politics And media. The politics is terrible up here. Hopefully there is something else for the papers to talk about over the next two days and this story misses most of queenslanders attention.

It will no doubt be all over the news bulletins and papers here, for sure. That simply cannot be avoided.

But that's the least of his worries in this case. Neither the TV nor print media can rule him out of the game. And, yes, the AFL and the Queensland government will supposedly be wanting to 'do the right thing'. Or, as is their wont, be 'seen' to be doing the right thing. After all, image is everything with both of the parties involved.

But if he passes all the COVID tests between now and Saturday, he plays. Nothing surer than that. Unless you seriously believe he has COVID (or is still hanging around with our players while potentially less than 100%), there is absolutely nothing to be anxious about in this story for mine.

There is a 4 day window between being infectious and a postive covid test result. a negative covid test result wont necessarily save him. We wouodnt let a girl go to her own fathers funeral despite having a negative covid test result. And she wasnt even sick.

And there was five days until the game yesterday, when it appears Toma was removed from any contact with the remainder of the playing group (and 'the bubble'). I don't see that he will have any concerns around the supposed 'lag' question, provided he continues to test negative for COVID.

And, as for bringing up the disgraceful and cold-hearted treatment of so many families in their grief during this pandemic, well, the Chief Medical Officer answered that matter conclusively a few weeks ago. Same rules for all, we are all in this together. Apart from those parties who can bring truckloads of cashola into the state, that is.

In that case, money talks and utter claptrap walks.

Logically and for sake of fairness and consistency he should be fine and not an issue. Im worried about irrationality and political point scoring.

ironically i dont think labour would care. Its only if the libs make a big deal out it that the labour government would want to come down hard And show queenslanders that afl footballers dont get exemptions. we are 10 days out from an election. Its all about mud slinging now.

Without a positive test for COVID from Toma, though, even this media sideshow will be nothing more than a flea circus. If he stays on the right side of that line, there is absolutely nowhere for this issue to go.

Well actually this is right. the queensland government argues there needs to be a 14 day window. not 4 days.
That is 14 days from a potential transmission event not from a negative test.
