Autopsy Hawks vs Pies and the tribute to Phil Walsh

These games can end up being a blessing in disguise. We didn't play well, we were beaten in general play, and we had to work our asses off to get the win. These games are gold when it comes to finals and you have to find that next level. Make no mistake here, the Pies are playing extremely good footy. A win against them is a solid win at the moment.

One thing that last night again showed to me, is we really lack a dangerous pack marking forward. I was worried everytime Collingwood bombed long last night with White, Cloke, etc there who can take a big mark. We really lack that sort of player.

Anybody else see this incident in the last quarter. We had a free on the 50 metre. I think Sidebottom had the ball about 20 netres away, and instead of returning it, he instantly just dropped it. Should have put our player in the goal square.

There was another incident where we had the free. While some Collingwood players stopped after the whistle was blown, others continued to play on and actually kicked it. I was quite surprised that wasn't 50 metre penalty.

I wonder if the side is restricting itself in any way from going hard for 4 quarters so not as to have a repeat of 2012 (too hard during this part of the year and then being spent in September)?

Obviously they want to still play 4 quarters (ie. Not switching off completely and letting successive goals be scored) but in terms of running hard and being physical with their opponents this kind of stuff seems to be coming in spurts.

You see the players just jogging around with half the intensity of a suburban over 50's team for 5-10 minutes and then next thing you know it's like a switch has been flicked and we see a period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes where you think you're watching the 2014 GF.

That GF shows that you can play like that for pretty much an entire game but 2012 shows you can't play like that for a sustained period.

We are beginning to see these bursts of play more frequently the last few weeks but I'd like to see us restricting the opponents score a lot more when we aren't.

I've had the same suspicions of that myself. Almost like they are pacing themselves throughout a game.
And like the Cats side of old, Hawks have this incredible belief that they can win any game from any situations so if they drop off 5- 10% and they can get back into games.
Interesting theory though Cryptor.

Said the same to a mate while we watched a game, we need a monster forward to clunk the big pack marks.

Very proud hawks supporter they were close to being blown away a few times last night and just stuck to it.
Lewis, Shiels and Cyril :thumbsu:

Had to come in to post on what the Hawks and the Pies did last night. This whole issue go's past any inter club rivalries. The "Circle of Reverence" that the Hawks and the Pies did to honour Phil Walsh , showed why both clubs are leaders in the AFL. True moments of worth are not scripted and artificially created by spin doctors they evolve. Be Proud guys you did your clubs and the whole AFL communities a true service last night
Well done Hawks and Pies.

Don't sell your club short also. Agreeing to a draw may prove costly after losing to Demons at home but they did the honorable thing.

no doubt collingwood are on the up. but how good will they be, is still undecided. i believe there just one of those teams the good sides haven't done that much homework on, due to seeing them as a minimal threat compared to free, sydney etc and thus have the chance to be found out in future seasons.

Thought our rucks were really good last night, not sure what the stats say but we did seem to get a decent amount of hitouts to advantage which was massive considering we were poor at the stoppage and soundly beaten in clearances.

Very important win last night for the balance of the season, they were the sort of wins we banked regularly last season and if it hadn't been for the poor games against Port and the Bombers we would be sitting very comfortably right now. The Pies threw the kitchen sink at us last night and we put a big dent in it.

The squiggle had Geelong losing by a couple of goals, so 2pts is better than none. ;)

Genuine question. Why is Cloke allowed to grab a bloke with both arms and throw him out of the contest? No one bats an eye at it, and good on him for using his strength if it's allowed, but it does seem to be against the rules as they are written. Hard to see a defender getting away with just throwing a forward to the ground?

Even saw him do it in just a contest for a ground ball, just grabbed one of our smalls and threw him to the ground and it was play on?

Did Varcoe get reported for this? Didn't look like much in it, obviously Rioli knew contact was imminent and dropped the head but in fairness if he raised his head he would have been more likely to cop a direct hit to the head and cop more damage. The idea that he ducked on purpose is a bit silly, it's human instinct to flinch when you sense contact, he never had the fine to raise his head. What could go against Varcoe is that he doesn't appear to be watching the ball in the moments leading up to contact.

Considering what buddy got away with a fine or all clear is all Varcoe should be expecting

Agree.

Runups seem waaay too short.

Who is our goal kicking/forward coach. Is it Mr Yze. Can you fix this for us please mate?

It's an interesting question because when they made Yze specialist goal kicking coach, preseason 2013 I think, our goal kicking went through the roof.

Goal kicking remained strong in 2014 with him in the role, then they promoted him as anew assistant coach after last year. And I'm sure he was happy but I did think what's going to happen with his goal kicking duties, does he maintain that as part of his role, does someone else take it over or do they take the view that the players have grooved their techniques and can just work on it themselves.

I was a bit concerned when I heard the news, I really thought that the results he'd got were of more value than anything he could achieve coaching general play.

Of course it's pretty easy for my simplistic linear mind to see goalkicking falter and assume it's because he hasn't got that specialist roll full time anymore and there may be more to it but what can't deny is that 2 year window when he was doing it coincided with far better conversion than before and now after.

It's been worrying me for months, I've needed to get it off my chest.

Contact would've been made to the head regardless of if he ducked down further or tried going back up. It's a ridiculous argument by some Pies supporters that Rioli contributed to it.

Would be interesting to know what's changed exactly, and if Yze is in fact less involved as a result of additional duties, but it's def a plausible theory.

Surely it's just a coincidence. It's goal kicking! Players have their routine, they know what works for them, surely they don't drop off that much just because they've got a different coach.

If you want to teach your kids how to kick set shots, show them videos of Jack Gunston.

He has the equal best technique in the league (no bias there what-so-ever)(equal with Josh Kennedy(WC) and Schulz)

They just aren't coming off lately, but I'm sure he will get his rhythm back imminently

Unless the new coach is deliberately making them kick badly.

Sack the kicking coach!
