Confirmed, well the calf injury not the hammy...
From the bomberwebsite:

Hird sidelined with calf injury
Monday, 3 July 2006
James Hird’s wretched run with injuries has continued after he was forced from the training track this afternoon with a strained left calf. The latest injury – which comes just two weeks after recovering from a hamstring injury – will sideline him for at least the next three weeks.

Hird, 33, has managed just seven of 13 games this season with soft tissue injuries plaguing the Essendon champion. Should he miss three weeks, he will return for Essendon’s Round 17 clash with Brisbane at the Telstra Dome.

The injury was sustained in the same calf muscle as the one that sidelined him earlier in the season. Hird was in the middle of a simple training drill, leading out to take a mark when he felt something grab and left the track immediately.

Our finals chances are now in serious disarray. And to think Lloyd was due to return in September.

Dam. Although we would love to see him play on again, i think its time he does hang up the boots, such a shame, by far the best player i have seen. been watching footy since 1996

I got the email from Essendon several minutes before you posted on the main board, so the article would've been on the site for about 10 minutes before you posted.

Also he did his calf not his hammy.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This could be his career.

Whilst I wouldn't say he has been a champion he has been a dam fine player!

WHAT THE......!!??

****. Hopefully he can come back vs Bris and play the rest of the season out. His body is falling apart, no point going on again next season imo as it's likely to be more of the same :(

Looks like he should be nursed very much through the rest of the season to enable a fitting farewell at seasons end against Footscray with a big crowd.

Agree. No one deserves a proper farewell more than Jimmy.

Don't want him going out like Carey.

Unlike you I don't see news and rush to Big Footy to post it so I can appear to be the first one with the breaking news. Small, silly things like that don't concern me.

LMOA - Do you think I can get a refund on the $10k I laid at Centrebet for the flag?
