Turned me against him for years...........Woosha was captain

I must admit he has earned my respect back with what he has achieved at Collingwood, you would be taking quite the risk letting him go.

+1;)

best coach of the modern era.

he has taken collingwood to 2 grand finals, within a kick of the 2007 premiership, and last year oversaw the youngest team to win a final this decade.

and collingwood supporters complain that he hasn't done enough for them, do they not know their own history? they're collingwood.

if in doubt check Leigh Matthews record with developing sides. never went anywhere after fluking 1990, and spent 4 years with a rebuilding lions team running on the spot.

WC were nearly bankrupt and shit on field when mick took over, and he changed the game. then there is his great work with footscray.

When he first came into Collingwood he made immediate inroads. He may have been better off spending a season tinkering and playing kids. Maybe that draft pick he would have got may have got him over the line against the Lions?

I do see what you're getting at, but you're remembering it very wrong. In his first game as Collingwood coach Malthouse gave debuts to Damian Adkins, Ben Johnson, Leon Davis and Josh Fraser. Those 4 played approximately 70 games between them that year.

He also gave a lot of gametime that year to fellow raw teenagers Nick Davis, Chris Tarrant and Heath Scotland.

Other young players to cement their spot in our 2000 lineup were Paul Licuria (22 y.o) Shane O'Bree (20) and Simon Prestigiacomo (22). Plenty of other youngsters such as Mal Michael also played a lot of football that year. Many of these names were picked ahead of older guys on our list who perhaps had shown more form to date, but Malthouse was experimenting with our lineup at the expense of short-term success.

The end result was a 15th place finish. With pick 3 we chose Alan Didak.

Thanks to all for your responses.
I would have pretty much expected the general tenor and a smattering of slightly wavering detractors in light of time elapsed.

I assume the dropping of Matera would have been a big talkng point when it occurred. You could never accuse the man of being indecisive though.
Cheers.

4 flags > 2 flags.

Always.

No doubt he is a great "coach". But to there is more to being a coach than just "coaching". This is Malthouse's weakness. Great coach of the talent available, but not great at assembling the talent.

WC were nearly bankrupt and shit on field when mick took over, and he changed the game. then there is his great work with footscray.
Despite what he did, he was gifted an exceptional list. West Coast had generous draft concessions and were able to pick up gun players at high picks because Vic teams didn't have recruiters like they do today. These days every recruiter knows about every bit of talent across the country (Jurrah being a rare exception). Back then none of the Vics had no clue who Peter Matera was.

The reason Collingwood didn't win a flag against the Lions is because Malthouse didn't assemble enough talent. Who did very well just to get a slightly above average list to 2 GFs.

Hello Tatey-boy.

You raise some valid points but I'm afraid the proof is in the pudding. Collingwood lost those 2 GFs because MM didn't assemble a good enough list. He did well to coach that lot to 2 GFs.

MM's downfall will always be that he doesn't build lists that are good enough to go all the way. Unless of course he wins it with the current group.

ps you err, still stalking people?

How come some posters in this thread state that phil matera was dropped for the 05 grand final? Thats bloody stupid, he got injured in the qualifying final and couldnt pull up for the GF. It irritates me that fellow supporters would get that wrong, this was only 3 and a half years ago and it had a significant impact on that game. Having Phil our leading goalkicker in would have probably won it for us, and i would say the mistake was not to have Lynchy in, though im pretty sure he came out and said he was injured too, though it was debatable at the time.

Mick was a great coach, sucks that the MCG rule duped us a couple of times in 96 & 99, but that was the shit rules. Happened to the crows in 02 & probably more significantly the lions in 04. Funny that the crows complained the next year and the rule got changed when they thought we were going to finish top and they second.
