How do you fix Melbourne?

I'm not really sure what the solution is. Do you drop the minimum cap to 70 or 80%? Do you allow front/back loaded TPP?

I don't get what was wrong with the 92.5%. I agree that there needs to be a minimum, but 95% is a joke - assuming an $8million cap, you're looking at a difference of $400,000 in total payments. That's ****-all. Maybe even 90%. I know NFL minimum is around 87%.

The whole reason the minimum cap is there is to try and prevent teams being that bad that they are 0-2 and 28%.

If Melbourne do get to the point that they are as shit as they are now then they should have millions spare in cap space to go and sign Lance Franklin and Gary Ablett and become less shit - that's the theory anyway.
Melbourne would have a better chance at Lance Whitnall

Should be 70% of the cap I reckon. And any player at a club like an under performing (an understatement) Demons who isn't happy with the contract he's been offered should be allowed to become a temporary free agent and look for a better offer at another club.

Good luck with that 90% of the Melbourne Demons list. I'm sure the top 10% of players in the Demon list would be well taken care off contract wise, the rest can consider themselves to be over-paid hacks.

The solution to all of this is quite simple and it is completely inappropriate for the AFL to bail them out too.

5. Realistically assess the playing list and trade away anyone who doesn't want to be there or doesn't want to follow Neeld's instructions implicitly. .

Agree with everything except this, I'm not sure Neeld is the man who will lead them out of this quagmire. I'd appoint someone with balls and experience, like MM or a Leigh Matthews type. Every time I see Neeld in the media he looks like he's about to cry.

My view, for what it is worth, is that Melbourne's ONLY hope is to merge with another Melbourne club, but this won't / can't happen during the current TV rights deal.

Port beat two bottom 4 teams by a combined margin of 135. Last year Port won only 5 games - none by huge margins, and managed to lose to GWS. They were the first team to lose to GC and are so far the only non-expansion team to lose to GWS. They were pretty arse in 2011/12 and I'm sure they'll get a reality check soon when they play tougher sides, but you can see they've improved over the Summer.

Melbourne are the odd one out of the 2012 bottom 5.

GWS pushed Sydney in Rd 1, and Port in Rd 2.
GC knocked of St Kilda in Rd 1, and lost to Sydney in Rd 2.
Port are 2-0 and 2nd on the ladder.
The Dogs surprised everyone smashing Brisbane, but came up short against Freo.

Melbourne... were flogged at home by Port then flogged by even more by Essendon the following week. 0-2 and 33% off 17th.

So they are slightly better then the crap teams?

I'm not doubting whether or not Port have improved, as they clearly have, I just think people are jumping the gun a bit with Port, lets see how they go against proper opposition and not just a young talented team who are competitive against most teams and a team of witches hats.

So Port beat 2 bottom 4 teams and all of a sudden they've turned a corner?
You obviously havent seen them this year. They look 10x better than last season.
Its all about the quality not the opposition or scoreline in this case. They look organised, fit, skillful and like they wanna play!

I have seen them play, and I acknowledged that they have improved, but lets see how they go against some teams who aren't sitting in the bottom 4 of the ladder.

The %, so what ?

The theory is you have to pay the real stars real money, which limits the ability to keep the mid range good, ordinary footballers, but, but shock/horror, these competitive guys want success over more money ... check out Geelongs group.

The Q-stick went for a 2 year deal, not just one & good luck to him, he has top be smiling this evening ..

Just as last century Freo Dockers players were over paid ..

Neeld is the coach at present so I used his name, it's not worth nitpicking over that point. But for the sake of clarifying, I've reworded it for you. :)

Not sure how you fix Melbourne but the players stepping up, looking like they want to be out there and being accountable would be a good start.

It's unbelievable to think that just two years ago Melbourne were being talked up as being well placed and on track to being the next AFL powerhouse.

Move to Tassie, change name to Devils, bring in some quality Tassie staff: Eade, Williams, Gale, maybe put Cressa in charge of the finances. Problem solved.

The % gives you flexibility in lower sides, allows you to reward performance and punish non-performance. If your bottom side is still making at most 5% less than what the top side is, there's less incentive for those people who do play for the money.
Furthermore, you can show an appreciation for those that deliver for you by granting them a bigger contract.

The minimum salary cap % rule was stupid from the outset. It was originally set up by Oakley, and widely known as the "Fitzroy rule".

It was an open secret among all club administrations that said "rule" was imposed specifically to make life more difficult for Fitzroy. No other reason. Another part of the whiteanting campaign over that whole 12-year period.

Should have merged with Hawthorn. We'd still be the same club, MFC, but with 80,000 members and a decade of premierships.

EFT.

Sorry Hawks supporters - but we do need a little whimsical amusement to lighten the mood here
