David Koch has been president of Port for 12 years now, and there are mixed opinions on whether it's been a success or failure.
He is similar to the likes of Eddie McGuire, Jeff Kennett and John Elliott because of his high profile and loud mouth.

In my opinion, Koch has been a great president because Port haven't bottomed out during his tenure - and Port are in a far stronger position on and off field now compared to when he arrived.
Sure there's been no grand final appearances or silverware but it's very hard to make a grand final, let alone win one.

What do you think of David Koch's tenure as president of Port?
Success or failure?

We gotta ask port fans about this

What is with your obsessive defence of Ken and Co in every possible thread. They need to go and are driving incredibly weak standards across the club.

When you have a president that is responsible for continually extending the most unsuccessful coach at any single club in the history of the game, he needs to fall on his sword as well.

Bugger off together hand in hand.

People still seriously acting like we were actually going to fold in the Primus years as if our rebuild was somehow worse than Melbourne's tanking years as well as what North are currently going through. It wasn't. Every team has s!!t years and we still avoided a wooden spoon during our darkest hours (The only team to not receive one out of all the 18 teams I might add) anyone who thinks that Port was actually going to fold is delusional. Even if the SANFL was pushing to strip the club of its identity, the AFL was never going to do anything.

The reunification of the club's identity and the Adelaide Oval deal had much more to do with Keith Thomas & Andrew Demetriou than it did David Koch. Koch was purely there to help with the clubs new advertising campaigns for stuff like the NTUA as well as the failed China experiment, but otherwise he's mostly just an outspoken mouthpiece trying to be the SA equivalent of Eddie McGuire.

And as much as I despise Eddie and his Victorian tyranny, the one thing you can say about him is that he actually understood football and how to setup a successful culture that did eventually win Collingwood a premiership under his regime.
David Koch doesn't understand football. He understands how to run a business for sure, but he doesn't know how to run a football club that can succeed on the field. And to make matters worse his obnoxious ego makes it impossible for him to own up to so many of the obvious mistakes that he's made as the club president.

Hence why he won't sack Ken... because doing so would actually require him to admit that he was wrong and that his plan was a failure. And his ego would never admit to accountability as we know.

David Koch is not only a blight on Port Adelaide, but he is also a blight on Australia as a whole, and we as a country would probably be better off if he wasn't apart of it.

Koch is smart because he realised Port had a supporter base on par with North in terms of size, so he aimed to market Port as a likeable club with quality game day experience to try and grow the supporter base.
The gap between Port and the Crows supporter base numbers is a lot smaller now than it was back in 2011 and 2012.

Port got 40k to their last home game, which was against St Kilda.
How often did Port get 40k crowds at their home games prior to Koch arriving at the club?

He oversaw the Merger with the SANFL side, the move to AO, and returned them to rerespectability.

He did neither. Those were already in progress before Kochie was on the scene.

Kochie and the board have done well in the finances and corporate sponsorships but it has come at the cost of losing some the Port history and identity. The AFL really pushed the board to form the PAFC as a version of Crows lite business model.

I don’t think it’s that surprising to expect that crowds would have increased for us regardless of Koch.

We had just moved to AO, a much improved stadium but more importantly it’s a central location. AAMI was always more difficult to get to and a barrier for some. AO also offers other activities on its doorstep to make a day/night of it.

The team improved through natural list development which had nothing to do with Koch.

And the population between 2010-now has increased by approx 160k in the Adelaide CBD and the population of the whole state by approx 250k over that same time. It would be reasonably expected that with an increased population you would see an increase in crowds in a 2 team state.

The gap between Port and the Crows has closed significantly in terms of supporter base sizes.

It's got nothing to do with population growth because if it did, then how come the gap between Fremantle and West Coast hasn't closed in terms of supporter base sizes?

Also, have you seen Melbourne's population growth since 2011?
How come North haven't grown much in terms of the size of their supporter base, despite Melbourne's huge population growth?
Port used to be Fremantle in comparison to Adelaide's WCE. Now, it's fairly close to 50-50.

2023 Adelaide Membership Total: 68,536 (9th)
2023 Port Membership Total: 64,041 (11th)
Do you have a state by state breakdown of these figures?
Would be interesting to see how many of those members are based outside SA.

A few cats dogs and kayo subscriptions in port tally.
They have more members than freo but ave 10k less for home games even though port have been higher on the ladder.
Crows would ave 10k more to

Conveniently ignore point A, then ignore point B and then resort to comparing us against perhaps the worst team to step on the field in the AFL era.

Is that really meant to be your red herring?

A quick glance at AFL Tables crowd figures indicates an increase across the board in the last decade basically across every state. Guess that’s down for Kochie and Ken as well.

The Primus/Tarp era was probably the lowest they had been. There were talks over folding or going into administration at the time.

He oversaw the Merger with the SANFL side, the move to AO, and returned them to respectability.

Kockie had absolutely heck all to do with the move to Adelaide oval. That was all done before he arrived.

The Kock's biggest achievement has been making ken a 10 year coach (and now 12) and turning a club that prided itself on success to one that's just happy to be making up the numbers in the AFL.
