Interesting discussions on various threads about our backs - so i thought I'd throw it out there and get peoples thoughts. For me right now I have them ranked as follows;-

1. Hurley: Height – 193, Weight – 92, age – 26, Games – 119, ave disposals – 16.4, ave marks – 5.7

Absolute gun and walk up start in any team. Started career up forward where he put in some memorable performances, but much better suited down back where he has received all Australian honours and been a star with his ability to read the play, intercept mark and set up the attack with penetrating direct kicking.

My ranking – 9/10

2. Hartely: Height – 198, Weight – 102, age – 23, Games – 19, ave disposals – 10, ave marks – 8

Bargain basement pickup who burst onto the scene last year and has made every post a winner. Imposing figure who with his strength can stand power forwards, out mark them and beat them at their own game. Was exceptional in several games in 2016 and has huge upside

My ranking – 8/10

3. Brown: Height – 196, Weight – 95, age – 26, Games – 36, ave disposals – 12.6, ave marks – 5.2

Versatile swingman who has often played forward but will be used down back this year with the return of Cale Hooker. Consistency is his strength and he rarely plays a bad game. Great mark and will be very dangerous if allowed to be the 3rd defender.

My ranking – 7.5/10

4. Ambrose: Height – 193, Weight – 92, age – 25, Games – 50, ave disposals – 11.8, ave marks – 3.5

Sometime forward and utility who seems to have found his niche down back. Has a huge tank for his size (is the same height and weight as Hurley) which allows him to get to many contests, and is a great tackler and spoiler of the ball

My ranking – 7/10

Hartley is the biggest steal in years...rating of 4!!?? You gotta be kidding.
Ambrose did a good job as a stopper.
Brown the floater who seems to read play better down back than up forward
Hurley - AA

Got Hurley definitely 1st and Brown definitely 4th.

Toss of a coin between Hartley/Ambrose. Hartley would appear to have more going for him, but I have a lot of confidence in Ambrose doing a good job on whoever he is assigned to.

Onus is on Hartley to keep improving because I don't think him and Dea can play in the same side when our full list is fit.

Hurley - 8.
Hartley,Brown,Ambrose - 4. All have limitations which sees them sit under the average for a key AFL defender. Hartley and Ambrose have the opportunity to improve again this year and become genuine AFL defenders.

The average for an AFL key defender?

Is that the same average which includes Kyle Cheney, Harris Andrews, Hammleman, Sam Rowe, Lachie Plowman, Schade, Lynden Dunn, Alex Pearce, Sam Collins, Zac Dawson, Joel Hamling, Tom Lonergan, Rory Thompson, Jack Frost, Kaiden Brand, Oscar McDonald, Sam Frost, Sam Durdin, Lachie Hansen, Jack Hombsch, Tom Jonas, David Astbury, Dylan Grimes, Nathan Brown, Hugh Goddard, Alir Alir, Marcus Adams and Fletcher Roberts?

Plenty of players in that list who have plenty of potential but in 2017 they're unproven and part of the list from which the AFL average is taken. If any of these players destroyed the same number of key forwards as Hartley and Ambrose did last year I'll leave it to you to produce the proof. Not many have the same potential Hartley has.

Bit generous.

Brown would be a 6 and Ambrose also a 6 at the moment. Brown's marking ability will be an asset and Ambrose will hopefully improve as he starts getting more experience in his role.

Hartley will be an 8 when he starts marking like I think he will. I'd give him a 7 for now.

If only Stewart breaks out. Hooker is our 10/10 IMO.

Hooker is an extremely talented forward in his own right. I really don't see it as a great compromise when he is able to take 13 marks against Robbie Tarrant or 3 goals against Rance in the wet.

This year is a great opportunity to have the most talented tall forward line since Lloyd/Lucas and get games into the Hurley/Hartley combination.

Good point. He kicked 20.19 in the last 10 games in 2015 of which we lost 8 games we were struggling badly. If kicks a little more accurately...50 goal tall forwards don't grow on trees. Then again neither do AA KPDs. Ah shit...what to do with Cale? I think most would agree we can cover for him better in defence than in attack so playing him forward seems the best option.
