How does a player like Joel Selwood go number 6 in a draft?

It was interesting to read in todays Herald Sun that your recruiting manager wanted Selwood over Hansen but was overruled by the medical staff, the head recruiter should have got his man after all that is his job to pick who he thinks is the best available plus Hansen is a dud.

If you'd actually read the article you'd have known Stibbard has picked a talented but injured bloke in Trotter before and he'd turned out to be no good because of the injuries.

So in that respect, the medical staffs opinion did carry more weight.

And Hansen a dud? Do you even watch Australian Rules Football?

Well done, you win the 20/20 Hindsight Award for 2009.

You guys had at least 5 picks in the 2006 draft before we snaffled Matt Campbell in the rookie. Ha ha. lolz at you.

And we ripped off Sydney to get Carey and Longmire for 30k the pair.

Any other club could have done it but didn't

Ha ha suck it rest of league

etc

etc

ad infinitum

Why be so defensive?
I'm not having a dig at Hansen or the reasons why you recruited him.
Just pointing out something I though was pretty relevant to the thread...

You also need to consider the side that Selwood walked into.

Would you all be talking about him this way if he had played 2 seasons at a club that had finished 2nd or 3rd.

Don't get me wrong he is going to be a superstar, but I think him playing in a side with Ablett, Bartel, Corey and Ling has given him the oppertunity to run around and do what he likes.

So Ablett, Bartel Corey & Ling get tagged each week and Selwood gets easy possessions?
That's like saying Simon Black waltzed into the Brissie side and started playing good because he already had Aker, Voss & Lappin dominating. He's proven he's a gun player with and without those 3 and it's not a stretch to say that Selwood will do the same...

FWIW I don't buy the Selwood is only good because he's at Geelong crap.

IF we had recruited him, I have no doubt he'd be as much of a gun at us.

The bloke is a gun, full stop.

^^^^
He might notbe "as" rated, but damn you would still put him in the top 2 of U/21's in the comp, He also just steps up whenether Bartel/Corey/Ablett go missing, i have no idea how people can dismiss his talent saying "he is protected by the best midfield"
VEry strong body, brilliant attack, Geelong are very lucky to snap him up, I dont think any team would have predicted it

one you get top 10 or even top 20 you're obviously one of the best young talents in the league. I mean there has been players go at 1 and not fulfil their talent. Joel Selwood was a great draft choice. They said he was the best Selwood brother and they were right. He is our next generation at the cats which is strange because he already has a premiership and 2 GF's under his belt.

I think the only reason he didn't go number 1 was the doubt with his knees. So far they have stood up (knock on wood).

I think plenty of teams predicted it, but like North, were just too wary of the knees.

Geelong were in the position I suppose, with that strong midfield, to take the punt.

North just wasn't.

going by the posts so far, am i right in assuming that everyone thinks it is completely impossible for gibbs, gumbleton, hansen and co. to end up as good as or better than selwood?

Not completely Impossible, but Jeez Gibbs/Boak would have to have a 300% improvement even before the measuring stick came out

SLF is right, a team like the kangaroos wouldnt want to gamble on a bloke who might possibly have a few Knee problems and leave the game without having the chance to have a crack, a Nice KPP prospect was a safer option and probably a bit more marketable, Hawthorn have the recruiting ideal that having a bunch of talented talls is better then a bunch of talented smalls again with North the Knee';s probably just tipped the scales into taking the best Avalable Tall. Leuenberger was picked around when Dean Cox was challanged by nobody and clubs were looking for those Tall athletic Freaks, I

While clubs like Carlton/Port cant be dissapointed with Gibbs/Boak, both will be in their own right classy players

Geelong had a Gem just roll into their lap, Remember if Boak wasnt there Geelong would of taken Him, and then Maybe Selwood would have been captaining the Pies right now and talk of him being better then Buckley?

Yep, its all swings and roundabouts.

Like at the moment North have a great stock of young rucks. But still need more pacy mids.

That means if we had the number 1 pick in the next draft and the top two prospects in the land were a ruckman rated 100 and a mid rated 95, but who suited our needs, we'd go for the mid.

I think the whole 'best player available' philosophy only really kicks in post 1st round.

Not impossible by any means, but if you could go back to draft day Selwood would go number 1 without doubt as he is already playing at a level which would vindicate the selection.

Mind you looking at the other players, non of them are duds. The KP's are taking a bit longer but the talent is obvious. It's just there has never been a player in my memory like Selwood that has taken AFL in his stride so easily. Maybe Tim Watson.

Judd went ok.

More than a Brownlow and a Premiership? Selwood.. the first AFL footballer to cure Cancer?

He's already got a premiership, and will hopefully get another one (or two) before his career is over.

As for the Brownlow - if there's justice in the world he'll get one. I've got money on him for this season, in fact.

I can imagine Selwood ending up with a Brownlow or two and multiple AA selections.

Um....mate.....Franklin?

That little gem just seemed to roll into some clubs lap...would be bagging a 100 at Richmond by now if it wasn't for that muppet thats in charge down there.

I almost think Richmond deserve some charity - maybe both Geelong and Hawthorn should just trade Franklin, Selwood and Roughead to the Tigers in exchange for just the supreme powers of Richard Tambling - seems fair to me

Why ruin 3 potential champions of the game by making them play for richmond?

North just wasn't.

Geelong's midfield at the end of 2006 was decidedly average.

Ablett was a part time midfielder who wasn't fit enough to make the most of his prodigious talent, Bartel had widely been considered an underachiever, Ling was being played out of position as a ballwinner rather than a tagger, Corey was being criticised for poor disposal, etc etc.

It purely came down to taking the best player available, regardless of position or need. Essentially, Selwood was too good to refuse.

At the end of 2006, Geelong basically needed every type of player, with the possible exception of key defender where we had Scarlett and Egan well entrenched (although it should be remembered at this time that Harley had been a non-factor due to injury so even our key defensive stocks were somewhat thin).
