How impressive are Collingwood?

Fourth or fifth on the ladder at season's end. This, according to my Collingwood mate, ten minutes ago. It would hardly be a surprise. Seeing mention is also being made about Hawthorn's injuries, it might be worthwhile to say that he also thought that the Hawks' most significant loss will be their coach. He holds in very high regard Clarkson's uncanny ability to weave magic on match day, when his team needs to react immediately to concerted pressure from the opposition.

I think the Pies are a good, honest team. Their best footy will challenge most teams in the competition. That said, their next game is an interesting one. The Dees are unrecognisable to the team of the last few years: they probably won't make the top 8, but they may have a say in who does. Collingwood wouldn't want to take them lightly, or they might leave the MCG red faced.

Put them against a full strength Hawks and they'll get belted. Above average team, 5th is the highest they will place if they are lucky.

Yet there we sit in 4th place after 10 rounds with the harder part of our draw done and an easier stretch ahead. Go figure.

5th can only be gained by luck!! Maybe not

Hate to see Pies supporters overrating our chances because it's a long way yet until September. The fact is that we have been playing very inconsistent footy and rarely playing out four quarters. The reality is that we have probably surprised ourselves to be where we are and you have to love how a rookie backline has held up but 5-8 is still probably about the right call for us unless we have a dream run with injury and players like Ben Reid can return from injury in best form and our 2 top 10 picks become best 22 almost immediately they are fit. I will personally take any finals finish this year with the view that we are building for 2015. It's hard not to like where we sit right now but to be suggesting we are any chance at a premiership this year is waaaaay premature! (After beating St Kilda FFS )

Nobodys over-rating our chances. Just calling it as we see it. We are a serious chance for top four (lets call it an even money bet at this stage) and if we make top four then anything is a possibility. As you said its not as if we are playing anywhere near maximun capacity yet so theres plenty of upside from proven performers to come.

A month ago Hawthorn were unbackable favorites. Two months ago Freo and Hawthorn were equal favorites. Things change quickly. Perceptions will continue to change in our favour if we dont stumble against Melbourne or the Dogs, then happen to beat Hawthorn. That game will be pretty important to our top four chances.

I have always pegged us as a top 4 contender this year. Will be a let down not to get there. Scharenberg and Freeman are unlikely to play AFL this year and they are not the answer to top 4 this year. Reid will be a major inclusion.

The real difference in Collingwood 2013 to 2014 is what players like Beams, Fasolo, Toovey and Young are bringing to the table after missing 2013 largely. Langton has been a bonus but is easily replaced as Seedsman is now available. We have depth arounf BHF. I thnk the Cloke/Ried/White forward combo can see a significant upturn in Collingwood for the 2nd half of the season.

Barely got out of second gear and still demolished the Saints. One of the most impressive performances I've seen in a long time. It was like watching boys play against men at times.

Collingwood look the real deal for me. They'll be hard to keep out of the top four (and hence, the flag race) come the end of the season.

Biggest story of the round, is the arrival of Collingwood as a legitimate flag threat imo.
honestly the biggest story of the round is your mob. NObody, absolutely nobody beats geelong by 110 points. Your mob have just become the clear premiership favorites barring anymore injuries.

beaten by Adelaide and gifted 4 points by the umpires against WCE. lets not act like it will be a 1 sided game
and is Carlton beating Collingwood as far-fetched as Collingwood beating Sydney?
im just looking for some consistency from you people
its hard to be consistent when your backline is made up of youngsters.

Your response seems to indicate that I was including you in my comment about people overrating us. Fact is I made no reference to anyone in particular. Only those who are suggesting that we are a premiership threat. Nothing is impossible for sure but when you haven't seen your side play particularly well yet it's a funny way to look at things. Totally agree that there's plenty of upside but all I'm saying is that anyone touting us as flag threats is way premature.

Couldn't totally disagree with that except I have us anywhere from 4th to 8th. Other than that, quite happy with your assessment.

you guys will struggle to beat Melbourne this week, will be a pretty close game but will you get wins against Hawthorn, Essendon and Port Adelaide?
Hawthorn have your measure and your still yet to play them twice, can't afford to drop 3 more if top 4 is the priority.

Based on?

Oh that's right. Based on nothing, just another flog trying to be clever.

HAwthorn struggled to beat GWS and Sydney didnt beat them. Whats your point exactly? Why are you reviewing the Melbourne game before its even been played?

We all agree that we need to win at least one Hawthorn game to make top four. We play Port at home so that gives us half a chance. We should beat Essendon who are not even in the top eight. Suns away will be a challenge too. If we win two of those five matches and dont drop otehrs agaisnt Carlton etc, then we should be top four.

Reckon Tony Armstrong should be getting a gig. Killing it in the reserves

Apparently hes doing ok and we also have Karnesiz who was knocking the door down until he did his hammy last week. Ben Reid is playing VFL this week too. And we have two top ten picks in cotton wool and two top 20 pick from last year playing pretty good footy. And mature age rookies Martin and Dwyer. Its not easy to get a gig. Shame for Armstong, he shoudl have gone to a weaker club. I suspect he was only recruited as insurance against Marley Williams going to the big house.
