Seriously, how f***ing stupid are you? Read my other posts - "apologist" - you really have NFI.
And where did I say the current situation is ok?

YOU stated he's the only politician in 50 years to act this way. I pointed out he clearly isn't.
How exactly is that me approving his actions or apologising for them?

Don't bother replying, stick to your crayons and tinfoil.
Oh yes lets all bow down to your superior knowledge. You keep supporting him. No wonder the state is in the situation its in.

Remind us what major sporting events feature on London’s calendar, or New York’s

You’ll find the one thing that gives Melbourne credence is that its major sporting events are held in Melbourne, e.g., Melbourne Cup, AO, F1, AFL Grand Final.

Let’s just anylse the statement we hear all the time

‘Sporting capital of the world’. Repeat often enough it’s not bending the truth

We have an F1 Boxing Day test and a grand slam and we pay through the nose to get other stuff now and then. It’s good, but the statement is hype.
AFL grand final and Melbourne cup? They are local culture like the boat race is in England, or the Highland Games

And some of the doom and gloom after the announcement, it’s over the top. Comm games rep will suffer far more than Victoria’s. They may be calling us bar stuards but they ain’t calling us mugs.

Which is not to say getting involved at all wasnt a mistake

Melbourne as the sporting capital of the world has always been a bit of a larf anyway. If you take away AFL, a sport half of Australia doesn't even play, cricket which about half a dozen countries have mastered, you're only left with the tennis, the GP plus the odd football match and one off events with any real global audience.
Yeah, if you completely ignore all of the sports, Melbourne ain’t much of a sporting city!

You also need to completely ignore the world class horse racing events as well, so when they’re out, you’re left with school carnivals and at that point, your opinion is completely valid…

I'm not saying we are or are not the World's Sporting Capital. But consider this:

  • There are only 23 FI's around the world each year, of which probably half are in the city (and not countryside). Neither London, NY, Paris or other cities renowned for sport have a F1
  • There are 4 Grand Slams of tennis - we host one
  • We host the Boxing Day test series, arguably the biggest cricket event, spectator wise in the world. Cricket is a sport followed by close to 1.75B people.
  • The Spring Carnival is the only horse racing event in Australia that attracts horses from around the world. Forget the Everest!
  • The AFL Grand Final may be irrelevant to the rest of the world but without it there'd be no BigFooty. And it is the biggest football event in Australia by a country mile

Which is not to say getting involved at all wasnt a mistake

Considering what we know:

  • that a report from 2019 about hosting regional games in 2034 said it was going to be very, very expensive, and said report was completely disregarded by the Andrews Government.
  • A delegation was sent by Dan in late 2021 to London to pitch for a "regional games" in 2026 games, confirming Dan desperately wanted the Games, and not the reverse
  • CGA warned Dan that having exclusive regional games was not going to be viable and some events should be in Melbourne. He ignored that advice

I suggest getting involved at all was a mistake

Is this right?

What’s more, in an annual global ranking of sport cities published last month, before the Commonwealth Games decision, Brisbane (15th) leapfrogged Melbourne (23rd) and Sydney (44th) to become Australia’s top ranked.

I suppose adding ‘Twenty third ‘into the phrase isn’t quite the same

Not that I’m unhappy with what we have, but that phrase is just hype

The label is a joke just like Most Liveable City.

I guess getting to host the Olympics, which is major, helped Brisbane leapfrog other Australian cities.

I couldn't believe that Melbourne is now 2nd most liveable city in the world. The CBD is a shithole, getting around is a nightmare, but...

IPA Pesutto on ABC Melbourne this morning being fed Dorothy Dixers by his fangirl side-kick. Admittedly had one or two valid points, but claiming he wouldn't have committed to the Games in the first place is interesting given Vic LNP's track record under Kennett, Guy's questionable approval MO when planning minister, committing to a major project in caretaker mode knowing they would likely lose an election, etc, showing they would readily have a "hold my beer" stuff up ready to go if they ever get access to the govt benches again.

Wasnt Ms Trioli in the chair OR was she looking over her shoulder as Jacinta Parsons was clearing out her desk ?

'Parsons announced on air at the beginning of her show on Thursday that she had made the decision to leave the program and instead spend her time focusing on other responsibilities.

“Like so many, my life has gone through some changes over the past couple of months, which has meant I’ve had to make some changes to the way I can work,” Parsons said.

“I’m desperately sad to say I’m needing to scale back from the afternoons show so I can keep up with my other responsibilities.

“I’m grateful to the ABC for their support and very excited to say that I’m not leaving entirely – and will continue to join Brian Nankervis every single Friday for the Friday Revue.” '

It'll be interesting just how far the Coalition (and their media partners or 'allies') run with the cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The problem is whenever the Liberals run hard on a major issue in the leadup to the Victorian election, however they are made to pay for it by losing the election.

Consider the following:

2014-Campaigned on the building of the East/West road link. Result: lost election
2018-Campaigned on the African gangs and crime issue. Result: lost election
2022-Campaigned on the COVID pandemic and the 6 lockdowns that crippled Victoria. Result: lost election
2026: Will campaign on the Commonwealth Games cancellation. Result: ?????

I'm don't care for horse racing too much these days but you do realise that stables from al over the planet come to Melbourne to try and win the cup?

The AFL might be a local comp but so is the FA Cup and the EPL. The AFL is much more than just the GF too, iirc, it's the 4th most attended league in the world.

This could very well be the downfall of Dan Andrews, i don't have a great opinion of my fellow Victorians of late, but it doesn't take long for politicians to fall off the cliff. Remember when Kevin 07 could do no wrong and within two years was out on his ear by his own party. My bet is Dan won't make it to the next election and will get the golden handshake before the public give him the boot! There is only so much the public can take and he has crossed the line with this one. Victoria is embarrassed and no longer can lay claim to anything in this country. Dan has run out of money and the barrel is empty.

But all the above disregards the only thing that matters - Dan's massive ego.
He can defy gravity and logic and can pull everything off and what's more he believes it.
I bet he fired up his 'Super Computer' - the same one that was a billion steps behind the curve when it came to COVID - and it tosses out the formula to pull it off.
But like COVID, we all know where he can jam his 'Super Computer'.

It'll get better, Stew, when we unleash the injecting population on Bourke Street.
The Creepy Assumer will no doubt give them two free floats in the Moomba Parade, if it's still such a thing, and he hasn't cancelled it in favour of something with greater virtue signalling qualities.

What's the injecting population?

There was two pieces of information that came our yesterday.

one is the victorian government was cancelling the games.

two is that the government had mismanaged its bid and hadnt even remotely estimated how much it would cost. Some of those costs will be lost.

Andrews support has gone down because of two. Victorians support one because they found out about two

Honestly I just think more people don't want to pay for the games than do.

I think they grossly overestimated the popularity of the games and on the end realised jettisoning it was the better political option given they couldn't go back and not bid for it.
