So after another good season followed by a hugely disappointing finals series the opinions around here seem to be that we're not much of a chance for the flag in 2018. Some people have suggested that we're now going into a rebuild and not really targeting a flag next year. In my opinion that couldn't be further from the truth. You don't pick up so many mature aged players just to start again after a couple of years. So where could the improvement come from?

I think there are 5 big areas of improvement we can look at.

1. Gary Ablett
Yeah it's not exactly rocket science to suggest that bringing in arguably the best player of all time could be a source of improvement. Yes he turns 34 next year but he won the GC B&F as well as polling 14 brownlow votes in just 14 games. Can anyone really imagine a situation where he's fit for most of the year but isn't in our best 5 players next year? Just need to get the trade finalised...

2. Players having breakout years.
This year it was Duncan who went from top 10 player showing promise of more to being elite. Ridiculous that he was overlooked for even the AA squad. The question is who can we get to do the same next year? The one I'm looking at is Cam Guthrie. Looked ready to break out majorly last year but then struggled with form and changing roles in the second half of 2016 and much of 2017. Looked to have rediscovered his groove late this year and his form somewhat follows Duncan's prior to this year. Other players possibly in this category are Blicavs and Menegola.

3. Young players having an impact.
Mainly because of injury we got practically nothing out of McCarthy, Cockatoo, Lang, Gregson and Thurlow in 2017 despite all of them showing previously that they have talent to be at least good AFL players. Thinking they can all have much improved years is optimistic and we don't need them to be brilliant but if 3 of these 5 can perform consistently and be locks in our best 22 then we'll be much improved. This year we were carrying a couple of kids giving us little impact most weeks. These guys would make our bottom 6 much stronger.

4. Forward structure and Taylor back in defence
Taylor threatened to become a genuine key forward at times in 2017 but he ended up being thrown all over the place and couldn't get any consistency. With Lonergan out Taylor will go back to defence and that should hopefully lead to him having a much more consistent year. We found a great forward structure with Dangerfield playing out of the goal square in the last 2 finals but the question marks were over our midfield without him. Would anyone really doubt a starting midfield with J. Selwood, Ablett and Duncan? I'd be playing Dangerfield forward for a lot of the year with Ablett also resting forward at times.

5. Composure in finals
For mine this is the big one. We were good enough to win the flag this year but in the first final we shat the bed in an epic way. The fact that we looked like over-running Richmond half way through the 3rd quarter despite being truly woeful shows it wasn't our overall ability that was lacking. We just didn't turn up on the day. The Sydney final was a huge step in the right direction. I even thought the Adelaide game wasn't so much about being overcome by the moment (dropping basic marks and continually fumbling like against Richmond) but having an off night with our skills which played into Adelaide's strengths and being punished by one of the most efficient rebounding performances you'll ever see. Basically whatever happens in the H&A season will be irrelevant. We could go 22-0 and have proved absolutely nothing. Will the increased maturity and finals experience of the group lead to a better performance come seasons end? For mine that is by far the biggest question that Geelong needs to answer to be a flag chance next year.

So are these likely to happen? If so what are our chances of going all the way?

If McCarthy and Gregson can play forward all year we are a chance. That is essentially asking for a miracle though. A full year out of Cockatoo would improve the team, but again, miracle required.

Ablett will be good to watch in the hoops again so it should at least be an enjoyable year.

The list is cooked.

No Mackie, Loners, Motlop or Lang. Whether you rate them or not that is a fair bit of depth. Depth that got severely tested this year.

Our last shot at a flag was 2013 and we have been treading water since.

Hopefully there will be some changes in game style and kids getting games but we are no where near a flag.

I expect we will be harder to play against in 2018, I expect we will play a smaller faster and more defensive forward six. Which will not allow the opposition to run out of our forward half the way they did in 2017. I look forward to the return of Gregson, McCarthy and Ablett plus the improvement in Cocky, Parfit, Buzza, Parsons, ZGuthrey, Simpson ,Cunico etc,

Looking forward to see how Selwood goes next year as there is another player for the opposition to stop.

I feel too much still rests on his shoulders and he and Hawkins are our two most influential players.

A lot of the depth talk could also depend on 22/24 being good enough to get some games (ala Parfitt). Hopefully 24 can be another SJ (I'd take a Charlie Gardiner type with 22 if it meant we had another SJ type :))

Depth is the single most overrated thing in this league. And we don't even lack for it that badly.

LEL

melting over Lang who hardly played and Motlop who only turned up for 2-3 games this year

If we are looking at it really basically, we have lost 3 players that were best 22 and 1 that was close, added in 1 player.
That 1 player just happens to be the 2nd greatest of all time though...
If we have a run at it with injury like Richmond got this year we are in it up to our eyeballs, but if we don't I'm not sure our depth below is up to scratch yet.
Break out years from Bews/Thurlow/Cocky would be nice... natural improvmet from Parf, Stewart, Buzz, Zuth, Simpson, Parso will also really help

The ace that could be in the pack... Zac Smith may go to a whole new level with his best mate Gaz back in the same side as him...

Of the 8, thats not horse shit.
Bottom of the 8 is rational. You said bottom 8, which would have been absurd. Ergo I apologise for any misunderstanding and my role in such.

I do think we're still in contention, but that's true of plenty of teams. It'll be very interesting to see where we go from here, especially relative to the competition.

I suggest our side will be much better balanced without Domsy and Mackie in it.. You can add a Gregson or Mcarthy for one of them and a Thurwlow or Parsons the other. Motlop and Ablett a straight swap

Don't forget improvement from a bulked up Z Guthrie next year.

The club’s current injuries run has to end at some point, I believe that we can and will have a much better season this year in that regard at the very least.

I don't think we had a bad run with injuries at all this year. Fourteen absolutely core players (i.e. pretty much selected when fit) - Selwood, Dangerfield, Hawkins, Duncan, Taylor, Lonergan, Mackie, Motlop, Henderson, Smith, Guthrie, Menegola, Tuohy, and Blicavs - all played 20 or more games in 2017. Three more - Menzel, Bews, and Kolodjashnij - played 19, 19, and 18. That doesn't look like a bad injury run to me.

Remember that out of all the top four sides, we had the most inexperienced bottom half by far. None of the other top four sides had any first year players in their line ups. Richmond has inexperienced players, but they where all 3rd and fourth year players in the system who where well prepared.

Adelaide and GWS didn’t have any running around either.

Next year our bottom end will be assured up a little more. Parrfit I think will become a good player. He is a superstar in the making and will make a stride next year.

Cockatoo will become a big player next year. I have faith he will explode onto the scene. I truly believe he has the skills and ability to become the games best player. What he can do is not matches by many in the competition. He has barely touched on the surface yet. Get him a big pre season and no injuries, put him on the midfield and watch this space. He is a midfielder not a forward.

Want to see Blicavs re invented. Play him a defensive wing role. He had a patch years ago when he played career best footy and I can actually recall viney on SEN saying he was the in form player in the AFL. At the time he was being used as a wingman moving up and down the ground gut running from one end to the other using his mobility height and elite endurance to make a huge presence.

I don’t want to see him standing around the contests or tagging. Every big game we have gotten blown away in, Blicavs has been a big let down. He doesn’t cut it as a midfielder chasing the ball or tagging.

Thanks for that, fully understand your confusion over my lack of clarity.
I believe our squad may improve if certain ones follow their development curve.
But our spine looks vulnerable to me.
