"Lucas and Lloyd were drafted by the Bombers in 1994 and 1995 respectively after the Dockers gave up those picks for Todd Delaney and Todd Ridley. Fremantle also traded the McLeod pick for Chris Groom in 1994."

Fremantle did not give up those picks, We never had them. The afl basically gave essondon 1st pick in the next years draft by allowing them to take 16 year olds in return for their second rate uncontracted players.
They pretty much gave the other clubs concessions when we entered the comp.

Edit: Also I think the guys name was Tony Delaney not todd

I think we traded them the #4 pick they used on Lucas (for Delaney I think) but yeah, that Lloyd myth has been debunked so many times I'm surprised there's still idiots who believe it. Especially idiots who get paid to write about football for a living.

I am so sick to death that the blatant cheating that happened to us has, over time, been changed so that we are the ones seen at fault.

How?

This from p293 of "Behind the Play ... A History of Football in Western Australia from 1868"

"A key part of the agreement - in addition to the club having the first draft choice for two years and two priority draft picks - was the ability to acquire over that same two-year period 12 players out of contract with their clubs. But when Michael Thomson, of Channel Nine, showed (Ron) Alexander the final version released by the AFL 'we discovered they'd changed the rules, in between agreeing with us and then going back to Melbourne and discussing it with the other clubs .... It effectively meant that when we selected Clive Waterhouse ... he was really the eighth draft choice .... because all those clubs that we'd taken a player from had taken the best 16-year-olds"

Make no mistake, the Victorian clubs in collusion with the AFL took the money then deliberately and quickly f*****ed us over big time.

And now, years later, the lie continues to be perpetuated.

I really did not realise this. I have been led astray by believing the media (rookie mistake).

You guys got a bit of a raw deal!

You certainly seem to be doing well with your drafting and trading recently.

Good luck for 2010

Alexander had his grubby little mitts all over that piece of treachery.
The master of mock indignation.

You will be de-frocked for that.

You guys are being a bit harsh, if there is anything I have learned from Victorians it's that we should be grateful we were even allowed to enter the thriving VFL competition.

Sure, the Eagles started off with a much smaller squad than the rest of the competition, and Fremantle got screwed over numerous times when trying to recruit, and the small issue of MCG 'home' finals for non-Victorian teams wasn't resolved until this century, but we wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the generosity of the other clubs.

I'm just glad that the Victorian inquiry wasn't needed, and they managed to make their way back to the top of the ladder where they belong.

As Bob Davis said, "Not to have a game on the MCG for two weeks, I think we are missing the point of what our game is about."

He must get really worried in the off season.

sorry GG, but to suggest ron had anything to do with that is blatantly wrong. to think he would do anything to not put our club in the best possible position is out and out false

That's not my understanding at all. And I am not relying on any official versions.
But I am not here for a flame.
Suffice to say that Ron is a very, very clever chap.

well him being my uncle, you can understand that this conversation comes up every family doo we have. one of the most passionate fremantle football club people you would ever meet, all he has ever wanted was the club to be successful.... if the finger is to be pointed... messrs mcneill hatt and neesham have a lot to answer for.

Is the story in the opening post correct that this applies to the Mcleod situation? I had heard that he was drafted by Freo but he and Neesham didn't get along so he decided to stay in South Australia and refused to move to WA. Given that he wasn't interested in being there the only option was to trade him.

Nice work Quinz :thumbsu:, but dragging that up helps infuriate me more (as the 'home' finals should for any Brisbane Lions supporters).

Kudos to you guys though for as Brian Cook points out, though the Eagles got screwed big time at first, in subsequent negotiations they repaid it back to the AFL in spades.

Admiral, your'e sinking me.

McLeod and his dad came to negotiations with a belligerent attitude, for as you say he didn't want to play anywhere but SA. This apparently caused Neesham to arc up; he could have handled himself better (according to Alexander, p294), of that there is no doubt.

But what's missed in all this is that the AFL would not enforce the rule that anyone disobeying the draft had to stand out for 2 years, forcing us to trade with Adelaide and no one else (as he wouldn't go to the eastern states). So, yet again, in another piece of revisionism, it's Fremantle who wears the blame.

The only small piece of satisfaction I get from this is that over the years, and by his own hand, McLeod's fractious and selfish reputation has finally been recognised and acknowledged.

Plus he ended up with that bitchy wife who looks like a witch when he would've been able to get a much nicer girl if he came to Perth. That's karma for you.

Idiosyncrasy, Stupid, Horrible, brings me nightmares

i was looking at the draft of 1994 and 1995 on wiki. What was the deal with the 8 pre-draft selections we took. Could we have picked lloyd or lucas with these picks?? I can't see anything on Wiki that shows where Lloyd was taken in all of this.

(pardon the ignorance wasnt watching footy back then)

Freo WAFL or Dockers KPR? He played for the mighty Sharks.

McNeill, Hatt and Neesham were Eagle plants. Nearly destroyed the club before it had a chance.

No because they were too young to be taken in the draft proper.

Benefit of hindsight but assuming we knew that signing un-contracted players would weaken the following draft we should have shied away from uncontracted hacks amd concentrated on youth.

Not really GG, I'm sure even he would agree that he was outmaneuvered by the pro-Todd forces when at the Eagles.

ron was victim of his own inability to kiss the right arse.... toddy had no problem with that, hence he took over.... the eagles were very successful in their first year, and when under ron... it took us 12 years to get as many wins in a year that they got in their first.

Fremantle Dockers passionate..... he obviously is a very passionate gummy as well, being a club legend down there (should see the arguments i created when i stated my allegance to the bulldogs ;))

big ron loves the dockers, anyone who questions that is simply wrong.... ive seen first hand how much he loves them, intimidating figure when frustrated by the umpires i can tell you  ;). as i said given a choice between the eagles and the dockers, it would be a no contest for ron, fremantle win a million times out of a million :thumbsu:

I do love your posting, and indeed, I agree with most everything you say.
So, it is with deep respect that I leave this alone, as a close family member may not be the best person, nor this the best venue, for this to go further.
I will drop the subject and say nothing more other than I agree on McNeill, Hatt and Neesham.
End of topic for me.

no worries GG, you have said nothing to offend, and i have enjoyed your posts as well :):thumbsu:, at the end of the day, our past being as ordinary as it has been, i suppose the finger can be pointed at all involved, thankfully we have managed to come out the other end to where we are today, which is as a financially strong club, with some of the most talented young footballers on the planet on our list.:thumbsu:
subject over for me too :)
