Instances where the Preliminary Final was the real grand final

Ah ok you're referring to other prelim. Totally agree. I thought you were talking about the Saints prelim as you mentioned them
All good.

Crows or Bulldogs were always going to beat St Kilda with the late injuries the Saints copped. Winner of that prelim was going to take hone the flag.

There really is a luck factor involved in nabbing a flag. Saints would end up desperately unlucky again just over a decade later.

never, not in my time watching anyway, not really an AFL thing. I’ve never watched a prelim and felt they were ‘real top 2’ playing for the cup with the following match set to be a formality.

tennis I feel like I’ve seen it a couple times. not AFL.

to the OP, some prelims were better games than the granny, certainly, but that doesn’t make it the real GF.

That's really a surprise in the modern system, which is designed to have 1 v 3 and 2 v 4 as the most likely Prelims. Unless the 2nd team is demonstrably better than 3rd, it's possibly happening a lot of the time.

Of course no Grand Final is a fait accompli, but last year Sydney and Port looked very ordinary, and the Swans had looked wobbly for a while. I suspect I wasn't the only thinking differently from you as that game played out.

'99 PF Carlton vs. Essendon. North Melbourne were very lucky Carlton did the dirty work for them to win a lacklustre GF the following week.

'87 PF was a cracker compared to the GF a week later. The Hawks without Dunstall somehow kicked 3 goals in the last minute of the PF to win and had little left in the tank against Carton on a 30 degree day.
You could argue the prelim the next year should have been the GF Blues vs Essendon. Blues shit the bed against Melbourne in the QF but people forget at one stage that year both teams were miles ahead of everyone else especially with Kouta in full flight. Than he got injured and the wheels came off.

Haha my god you W.A people are something else, GF was a genuine 50/50, the story you just made up was the one your inferiority complex constructed.

SUNDAY Footy Show host Tony Jones has moved to defend his comments stating a grand final berth would be “wasted” on West Coast if they were to make it through.

Jones told 3AW on Monday morning the Eagles’ win over Collingwood was a “pity” because it placed them the box seat to reach the last Saturday in September.

The Melbourne-based journalist said West Coast’s ‘poor’ record at the MCG meant a grand final match-up with Richmond or Collingwood promised to be one-sided.

Speaking on 6PR, Jones doubled down on the statement and reinforced his right to be “parochial” on air.

HEAR THE CONVERSATION IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ABOVE

“Why do I feel like I’m walking in front of a firing squad?” Jones asked host Simon Beaumont.

“I don’t know if I retreat from the comments because, I mean, purely from a parochial point of view - that being someone who lives in Melbourne - we would like to see two Melbourne teams fighting off in the grand final at the MCG.

“I make no apologies for that, just as you would love to see two WA teams playing off in the grand final.

“I also said that the recent record of the West Coast Eagles would point to a pretty one-sided contest if they were playing a Richmond or even a Collingwood.

Jones was one of them, but there were others as well.

Story I made up? Yes the GF was a 50/50 (thats my point) - but that's NOT how it was portrayed before hand. If you lived in a bubble and missed the media hype around Pies/Tigers, then great!

Heck, the media was also talking up how great it is that Melbourne was gonna make a GF - though they were tipped to lose v winner of Pies/Tigers by most pundits

Jones was one of them, but there were others as well.
Haha so Tony Jones = everyone. Got it!

Open and shut case that!

It’s like me referencing the back page of the West Australian as evidence everyone thought the Suns would be a walkover 😂

Middle child syndrome lol

As I said there was others, Jones was the notable one from that year. Eagles media clipped them all from the ones which were going on about how it was going to be a fizzer of a grand final based on what happened in 2015.

But sure you do you champ and stick your fingers in your ears and pretend it never happened.

West Coast gave Richmond a hiding in 2018. AFL let them off in 2019 by not making them play us in WA aswell as the MCG.
Adelaide gave us a hiding in 2017 and GWS gave us a hiding in 2019. What’s your point?

We would’ve done your mob by ten goals in the G in 2018. Absolute flash in the pan and one of the worst premiers in recent times. You should be grateful gastro ran through us in the prelim because you’re holding our premiership cup. Got booted in a semi the following year. Pathetic.

2019 Prelim - Richmond vs Geelong.
Pies beat Geelong a couple of weeks prior and also were 1-1 with Richmond in 2019.

Plus of course the lingering ghost of the prelim the year prior would've been there.

So I wholeheartedly disagree.

I still think Richmond win the 2019 GF if they play Collingwood, but I reckon it would've been a real good game of footy

Says who? You beat us in 2017 by 11 points at the MCG. 2019 by 6. Both times without our most influential player in Naitanui. 2018 you got your rings stung and your arse cheeks slapped.

Dont try and run down our premiership. Everyone will remember that game forever. Pure gold. Epic & historic.

Just because you guys finally pulled it together and won 2 & 3/4 premierships doesn't give it to you to put out the hard word. Especially after what Richmond FC coughed up throughout the 80s, 90s & 2000s.

Cudos for your 2 & 3/4 flags. Dont deny the AFL didn't give a massive leg up by fixturing your last 7 games at the MCG and not having you play us in Perth as well as the MCG in 2019 though.

In 2018, there wasn't an interstate side in the league that would have come close to beating Richmond at the MCG in a final.

In the H&A, different story, the Tigers got pole-axed a few times by various teams at various venues across 2017-2019, but the finals at the MCG against an interstate side, different story.

Collingwood at the MCG were amazing that PF though, and probably the only team at the MCG that year that troubled us.

In 2018 the real grand final was the real grand final. It was epic. Its top 3 GFs of all time.

Tigers last 3 wins at the G for the season prior to finals were all under 8 points. You guys were due and due you got. Hardly as dominator as you would like to portray.

How come both games v the Cats during the season were at the MCG? Surely one should have been at Kardinia.

Adelaide would have whipped you any stadium apart from the MCG in 2017

Finished higher and were the better team. If not for Dusty you'd have 2019 and thats it.

Lots of hypotheticals there, bud.

The fact is we’re one of the greatest teams of all time and completed a dynasty. Your internet posts won’t take that away from us.
