Is Jeremy Howe AFL standard?

Is he a better footballer than Russell Robertson was?

Robbo was an extremely one dimensional player but he was very good at what he did (428 goals is nothing to sneeze at). Howe probably has more ability overall as a player but as it stands he will probably end up with a lesser career individually.

Howe was good today, he won't kick bags but as clogged said he kept Taylor accountable and kicked his two goals. He should be aiming for 1.5 a game and being accountable on his opponent.

Think Melbourne has struggled to discover his best role.

Is 25 next week. Yeah he may become a better player but he may also stagnate if/when he loses his jumping ability.

I wouldn't go onto the Melbourne board and tell people who see him every week that Melbourne should find out what they can get at the trade table, but since this is the main board, that's my perspective as a neutral. I see him to this point as an "icing on the cake" player which Melbourne can't afford at this point. This thread confirms to me that his standing among the footy public is higher than what it should be; perhaps it's true at other clubs also.

At his size he should be that mobile forward who works around Hogan and Dawes and provides a lead-up option while being a difficult contested match-up, like a Jack Darling. Will cut him some slack for this year if he's underdone, but will watch with interest to see what transpires.
He's icing on the cake. But at the same time we've got some cake types in place. We are getting to the stage in a rebuild where we could do with extra speed, class and skill and in that regard it might be better to keep Howe rather than trade him in for a gamble. If we could be guaranteed of one of the missing pieces like another speedy back flanker/wingman or a ruck/forward type I'd make the move but drafting for need is dangerous and there's nothing on the trade table yet.

Heck no. Robbo copped a lot for his later seasons antics trying desperately to jump at everything and lacking a defensive game. But many forwards of his vintage had no idea about defensive work and when the game changed were caught out. Even some of the greats like Lloyd fall in that category.

He spent many seasons are a really hard leading, strong marking goal kicker.

So, trolling is allowed back on the main board now?

Nah, Robbo could kick well. Howe's kicking is over rated massively. He has his days when every thing goes through, but mostly he is an average to poor kick. However, still AFL standard, that's how shit goal kicking in this league is atm.

Good question and excellent comparison.

I think that Howe has a more well rounded game, Robertson kicked more goals though. Both very one dimensional and overrated imho

He was good, I just think that us Melbourne fans overrated him a bit.

But that's what's great about footy, we all see things from different angles

Was referring more to the question "What else does he offer the Dees?" than the thread title.

I watched him a lot in 2013 and was generally underwhelmed. Had a tendency to completely go missing for quarters and halves at a time. Agree with the OP that he's tended to rely on his big leap to have an impact. If he was a tall I'd cut him more slack, but going on 25, he needs to step it up and become a more rounded player. Whether Melbourne shells out the coin required to keep him will say plenty about where he's at.
Who didn't in 2013?

What needs to happen is he almost needs to be Robbo 2.0. License to jump, try to kick goals. The way Hogan plays I think it works too. Have Hogan roam in a Carey-esque manner while Howe stays forward. Have Garlett crumb the marking contests and if he snags one even better. Hogan plays the monster while Howe's antics create forward presence.

He would have been much better in a good side as well. I don't ever recall him dominating as a younger player when Melbourne were good but he was kicking 2-3 goals a game at the end of his career when you guys were getting dumped on (Could have been a latish bloomer like Scott Thompson who arguably didn't start playing his best footy until 28-29(. It would have been interesting if he got a twilight like a Schulz. No one rated him before 2014, but he was kicking 2-3 goals a game in games where the ball hardly went up Port's forward half and with good service has demonstrated how good he can be. Now we are back to lobbing it on his head :(

Melbourne wasn't that bad during Robertson's career. In the seven seasons he played 21+ games 2000-06, they made the finals five times. Have played through that relatively prosperous era, he expressed disapproval over the tanking.

Wouldn't be expressing reservations if Howe was as good. By 25 Robbo had 29 bags of 3+; Howe's got 4, 3 & 3 v GWS & GC 2012-13, and three other bags of 3. Granted, it's harder to score these days. Maybe Howe will kick on from here.

Howe has not had a great year overall. Was very good against Collingwood which was pleasing. He was also very important against the Cats. They generally are very good at marking opposition thrusts forward. Howe prevented that.
