Could have made finals in 2017 and 2020 if we won just one of the multiple games we should have. Destiny was in our own hands both years yet we threw away games which meant we had to rely on other results.

All teams can make finals if they win games they "should have"

That's the difference between the contenders and pretenders - sides who are a real flag chance win the games they are supposed to, and find a way to win in games when they look down
 
Not really. Actually, no team is in a 'proper crisis' until they are financially rooted. And, with the AFL equalization package and the plan to expand to 20 teams, no club will fall in the near future. Let alone Melbourne.

Basically, the AFL will prop up the 18 (or 20) clubs so that the Media deal can have 9 (10) games a week.

Melbourne are fine. They are only one of 11 teams who are paid by the AFL EQ.

Probably worth putting Melbourne into perspective here and not just throw them under the bus.

10 clubs receive payments from the AFL.
1 (Richmond) are around break even.
7 clubs make payments to the AFL.
