Sometime we need to not look so hard. Carlisle is a better contested mark and more natural forward than Hurley, Hurley is a competitive beast and more athletic to go with more forwards.

Our midfield played shite but we won through a few dominant performances.

Winders back was also an important move and one i've called for for a long time.

Clearly a Carlisle and Hurley swap of positions id think. I was calling for Hurley to remain forward but that was before JoeD and when Gumby couldnt get out of bed and before our rucks improved their forward ability (TBC). Before Crameri got some consistency in playing.

It bloody well helps when Crameri decides to play (his second half was massive).

For the rest of the season id go

---Winderlich-----Carlise----Del'Olio---
-----Ryder-----Gumbleton---Davey---

crameri?

The dysfunctional forward line is just a flow on effect, when the midfield gets on top we score easier. Any mark or free from half back to half fwd there is obviously a clear instruction to play on at all costs, half the time it doesn't work or results in a series or handballs to correct the original poor decision to play on in the first place giving the fwds no idea where or when to lead. Second half Crameri just seemed to go long towards goal rather than stuff around, need to tinker the game plan over the bye.

Carlise actually played his junior career as a high lead up CHF so playing forward is his natural position.

So what are we going to actually do for the rest of the season?

1) Play carlise forward hurley back for now on?
2) Play with 1 ruckman and have crameri/gumbleton/carlise forward?
3) Play with 2 ruckman and have Carlise + Gumbleton or Carlise + Crameri?
4) Dell olio? davey?

Hurley was going well enough as a forward in the first half. Simply swapping Carlisle and Hurley is not going to change much for our forward line (except that Carlisle might hold on to a few more pack marks).

I thought that Gumbleton generally got to the right spots around the ground against Sydney and it was the conditions which prevented him holding the marks that would have seen him have a really good first half against a quality opponent.

I'm still not seeing anything that says that we can continue down the path of excluding Gumbleton from the best 22 (Daniher is obviously not ready). I don't care whether Carlisle or Hurley plays forward/back, getting the additional key forward into the side is what is important.

Probably haven't seen enough of Carlisle to be certain ( easier to play well in short bursts up forward than week in, week out) but I'm starting to think he's our best forward option and that it will significantly improve us to have him there...his pack marking is no small thing....he'll either clunk them or at least bring a soft crumb to ground, very hard for opposition to destroy the contest when he's involved. Plus he's a great plan B, i.e. nobody open or on the lead then go long to Carlisle. Hurley, Ryder, Gumby don't give you this and TBC only occasionally. I'm keen for Carlisle to play forward from the start against GC and see what happens. Plus, I love, and have always loved, Hurley back.

Agree we needed the extra key position player and thought we looked better for it. Only problem for Daniher was that too often he was out-marked when the ball should have come to ground at the very least and nerves got the better of him kicking for goal in the last....both can be fixed very easily. Other than this he moved to the right spots, was constantly involved and regularly found the footy - something Gumby has been unable to do all year other than against St Kilda. Gumby needs to actually dislodge him for mine, hasn't done enough this year to automatically come back in. Other than being better able to hold his ground in the contest, I'm not sure there is anything else Gumby does better than JD.

What is everyone thinking re playing two ruckmen going forwards?

I like the ruck dominance that Ryder/TBC provide playing together but Ryder has been invisible up forward all year and TBC had gone quiet last few weeks. If our forward line is to become functional it's critical these two stay involved when resting forward.

Alternatively, we can look at playing one ruck ( which one is a discussion for elsewhere) and play Hurley/Carlisle, JD and Gumby together. JD can ruck part time or Gumby can play the "Leigh Brown" role (prefer this to JD rucking). Crameri played as a genuine high HFF in second half against Carlton and looked all the better for it.

I reckon getting this structure right is hugely important for our season. Interested in peoples thoughts.
