James Hird returning to the AFL

Anyways he's probably bored cos he's finished reading about himself on big footy so he's looking around and they're testing our tolerance of him becoming a public figure again, as if none of it happened when we all know it did.

I don't think Hird did much wrong to begin with. I don't even think what was injected was illegal (yet). The problem was people heard "injections" and they think steroids or something really bad and someone had to be sacrificed for this.

Was what he and Essendon did flying close to the sun? Yes. But that doesn't make it against the rules.

I've barely listened to Triple M since the whole Garry Lyon / Billy Brownless fiasco. Totally ruined my Friday Night listening with the guys they got on now.

I got no problem with Hird being back doing special comments. He was fine when he was doing it on Channel 10 and the time he spent on Fox Footy on On the Couch. Who am I to stop someone from trying to earn a living.

Yeah but we all know what happened to icarus. Being golden headed isn't enough to save you it seems, and rules. Breaking the rules! More than little rules were broken.

I don't think Jimmy Hird wants to be doing it as much as we don't want him there. But man has a family to feed and it's the only thing he is good at.

Yes He is a real man with a real wife wife and kids and you want a good life for them and all, but, considering, it'd be better for my personal sense of justice being served, if he chose a path other than footy, for what he did.

Let the man make a living. One could think we still burn witches reading social media.
He should be making a living off his capital so we don't have to feel all financially sorry for him and his wife and kids because he can't work in radio.

He is hardly being burnt at the stake. He is not Joan of Arc. It is his punishment and he won't decide when time is up, public opinion should.

Be interesting to see what that opinion will be. It's about 67/ 23 at the moment on here probably.

Ok, so trial by public opinion. That will get us far.

Yeah all we need is Lance Armstrong commentating bike races. Maybe he can offer some insight into spotting drug cheats. :$

Lance actually does a podcast during the tdf and it's quite interesting. I don't have a problem with it because it's just his own podcast, it's not as if the cycling fraternity invited him back in.

At least with radio we don't have to see the smug campaigners face

Surely James Hird has the right to provide for his family and make the most of his life with what talents he has, doesn't he? Trials by public opinion, whether through social media or otherwise, tend to remove any acknowledgement that their targets have the ability to redeem themselves for their wrongdoing (real or perceived) and no amount of contrition has ever seemed enough to sate the masses seeking to prove their own virtue by outrage.

No moving from abstract considerations of morality, the redemptive process and mob/victor's justice to a purely football perspective, Hird did the wrong thing. He may have even been obstructive. A penalty was prescribed, and he also seems to have abided by it, though due to the nature of the particular wrongdoing he was a party to, I don't think it appropriate for him to assume any official position within the AFL organisation or as a coach at AFL level (a role such as that reportedly offered by Fremantle wouldn't require him to be involved in coaching, and would be an excellent use of his talents). However, for all his failings as a coach his successes as a player were spectacular, and combined with his general articulateness would make him an insightful and thought-provoking commentator.

Now that may have sounded too balanced. If there's any doubts about my personal views, look at my avatar and feel free to post a jibe at Essendon for the PEDs saga for an easy like 🖒

There are many our here who would be happy to do that. All we've wanted to hear is some sort of remorse from Hird for his part in the drug saga, but as of yet we've heard nothing. Until that happens, he can get stuffed.
